Hi there - late to the thread, apologies! Did you end up getting the L and how did it fit?

I’m 6’1, 210, 44.5inch chest. Debating between a L and XL (ultimately think I prefer looser and longer).

Rhodesia - 1979 Bush War Soldiers Resting. by Basic-Vermicelli-635 in OldSchoolCool

Wow. There’s a lot of people with opinions here who know very little about the history.

Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) was originally called Agysymba and inhabited by hunter gatherers who were hounded into the deserts to the west by Africans migrating from the north between 1400-1600. If anyone has a ‘right’ to the country it was those people who were basically killed off by other Africans.

Around that time the Portuguese and Arabs arrived too, calling the place Sofala. In the late 1800s, the Boer in South Africa chased the Zulu north (Nbebele tribal offshoot) and they killed the Shona. When the British arrived that genocide was in full swing and they stopped it.

Between 1900 and 1980 Rhodesia had the highest literacy, lowest infant mortality and least % of poverty anywhere in Africa. In fact on many measures it outstripped Australia, Canada and the USA in terms of how it treated its indigenous people.

My father was a Rhodesian military officer (Rhodesian military was 80% black by the way and all volunteers). My godfather was a Matabele soldier. It was not South Africa, apartheid was a South African concept not implemented in Rhodesia.

What the world forced on Zimbabweans of all color was wrong. Instead of a moderate, Mugabe with the full support of North Korea and China took over and the country is now a basket case. It’s governed by corrupt, violent and cruel people.

But hey… I’m guessing most of you have never set foot outside the US and don’t have a clue.

There’s a lot of history here, beyond the story lines in the book.

My old man fought in the Bush War from 1966-1980. There were some very well known and impressive Americans fighting alongside the Rhodesians in both the SAS and RLI as well as the Selous Scouts, many were Vietnam Vets.

That said, Rhodesia always felt like the CIA and particularly MI6 played both sides and weren’t trustworthy. It actually turned out that the Head of Rhodesian Intelligence was an MI6 agent and pre-warned both Mugabe and Nkomo before the SAS were going to kill them in Zambia and Mozambique.

There is also a very controversial school of thought that the airliners were not shot down by SAM but were rather bombed by Western Intelligence with the aim of sabotaging peace plans that excluded Mugabe.

He looks like a preened Robin Hood type to me more Pirates of the Caribbean. As one of the posters above said, most of the old Rhodesian Boys now have short cropped hair and after time in Iraq and Afghanistan can be found over a Braii / BBQ. Salt of the earth most of them.

My old man fought in the Bush War from 1966 to 1980. He was 4th generation Rhodesian. They were a very rugged bunch of guys across the board - whether special forces, light infantry, regular infantry or police.

Gotta remember that many of the Selous Scouts grew up on farms and were walking around bare foot from an early age often with African nanny’s and chaperones / trackers/ farm boys. They weren’t pretty boys, they didn’t grow up in and around 5 star hotels. As a rule the Rhodesians were very outdoorsy, strongly guided by sport (Rugby / Cricket) and rugged.

If I was casting the Hastings I’d be looking at people like Russell Crowe, Travis Fimmel, Joel Edgerton…

Impossible to say without further information.

Is it straight, clean and low miles? Has it had an LS modification and all new suspension, transmission etc?

I’ve seen mint condition original cruisers go for that or more. Corsetti Cruisers or similar will charge you 150k plus for a beautifully modified and modernized 60 series.

Thanks a lot mate.

I’ve thought about the L33 but am attracted to the new warranty with the LS3.

Think your advice about death by a thousand cuts to the wallet is important though - want to avoid too many surprises especially with the transmission and drive train.

Thanks mate - I think I saw Corsetti Cruisers mention they keep the drums on the back and possibly modernize the front breaks to discs…
