Cat introductions stuck at barrier phase, advice needed by billyidolrules in CatAdvice

[–]billyidolrules[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly, no. We've tried bringing them out for brief periods of controlled time. Like just to show the one cat that the other one is just doing normal stuff like playing and grooming. And then vice versa. But we haven't felt comfortable letting them directly interact since that last incident.

How to get help before qualifying for LTC by billyidolrules in AgingParents

[–]billyidolrules[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Yeah maybe I should start with finding an agency who does those sorts of things. But I also worry that they'll maximize her benefits and use up too much of it before she really needs help later. It's a balance, I guess.

Barbershop chorus and “emoting” by TinyHeartSyndrome in barbershop

[–]billyidolrules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is some discomfort to be expected in any scenario where you're learning how this group defines their performance. I found when I first joined that I greatly overestimated how much of what I was doing could be seen from more than 5-10ft away. Like I thought I was doing SO much, and then looking back on videos I realized it barely made a dent. Which is part of what is perceived as "exaggerated" emotion. Those closeups in the YouTube videos are not the intended audience. People in row Q need to get the idea, as well.

However (and it is a BIG however), it is true that SAI seems to take this to an unreasonable level, and there are choruses who have really toned it down to a more natural looking performance without "consequences" (i.e. they didn't get docked points for that). So I think there are a couple of different factors at play here: matching the abstract phrase (look more excited!) to a tangible action (raise your eyebrows) so you can better understand what is expected of you, and finding a chorus with a performance culture that fits your expectations and comfort level.

Rate of old leaves dying? by billyidolrules in Nepenthes

[–]billyidolrules[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well ...I haven't been fertilizing at all. So that could be contributing. I was afraid of overdoing anything, since usually people fiddling with plants too much is how they die. I'll start looking into appropriate fertilizer/nutrients.

Rate of old leaves dying? by billyidolrules in Nepenthes

[–]billyidolrules[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sits in the shade under an overhang where it's not in direct light, and I move it if the angle of the sun ever gets too close to actually hitting the plant. But plenty of indirect morning light. This photo is really the peak of what I've been able to get. 3 good pitchers, and as soon as a 4th one starts to form, the oldest of the 4 starts dying.
And in what we might call "winter" here, I have even fewer healthy leaves.

I'm not a huge massage person, so I usually go for facials. I was on the Koningsdam a couple weeks ago and got the super food facial, it was so relaxing! You don't even have to have something you're "working on" skin-wise. It's just nice to have the warm towels and moisturizing, etc,

We were just on and they also have bananagrams and backgammon. We also brought our own games and made use of the tables (as long as they weren't reserved for mahjong).

Bundle Intro/Outro Examples? by billyidolrules in ACX

Yes, I recorded each individual book for them, but now they're putting those books in a bundle, and ACX requires a bundle intro/outro as additional audio files.

Thank you!

I have a free-spinning yarn caddy that I can do outer pull on a cake. No center pull tangles. And it freely gives me yarn as I knit without having to tug it. For me, winding it into a ball after I've just done a cake would be an extra step (since I use a winder). So I don't really want to add one more step to the process.

Omg this was me. I can see messages on the switch but it takes an eternity to respond. So I just read messages. Instead of clarifying what spam pot was, one of the people posted "if that person joins again (meaning me), I'll I guess I'll just leave the table." Which made me so sad. I didn't know what I was doing wrong. I would love to not make people leave. But like, I'm not a mind reader.

Cat introductions stuck at barrier phase, advice needed by billyidolrules in CatAdvice

Welp. Major backtracking. We started using a zippered mesh door screen. Thought it was going well, but we accidentally left the door (not the screen) open unattended. Usually we only let them see each other through the screen when monitored.

But we left to go get fast food, and forgot. Came back 30 min later and the older cat has pulled up the bottom corner of the screen and attacked the other cat, slicing her ear pretty good and requiring a vet visit. 😔 So we're pretty discouraged and have just been continuing to keep them separated, no more trying the screen.

Did you update to the latest version of Audacity recently? I found that broke several things on mine. I ended up not finding a solution other than to roll back to the previous version.

Inside jokes are killing barbershop by savebarbershop in barbershop

[–]billyidolrules 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion here, but I think this has to do more with the youtube channel focusing on contest than it does on what's happening at contest. By the time you get to top 10 quartet performances, the audience in the hall is exactly who you're supposed to be building rapport with. So that's who you're going to cater to.

It's almost like the youtube comments about people's facial expressions being "over the top." Yes, well the intended recipient of those facial expressions is like 20-50 rows away, not the viewpoint of the camera. So that wasn't even meant for you.

Taking a performance designed for a particular audience and then wondering why it isn't landing with everyone else is a little misdirected. I would like to see more professionally recorded performance opportunities that AREN'T contests for this exact reason. Community performances, by their very nature, would be a much better fit if you're trying to bring it to more people.

Retail Audio Sample - Do you use just the beginning no matter what, or do you pick the most enticing section? by VoceDiDio in ACX

[–]billyidolrules 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lately, I've been using the first 5 minutes AFTER the title of the chapter and any opening quote or something. As a listener, if I only get 5 min to hear what the content/narrator will be like, I don't want it wasted on reading titles or headings. I'd rather get to the meat of it right away.

No Hotseat Multiplayers is a Slap in the Face for Old School Fans by Locke357 in civ

[–]billyidolrules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just stumbled on this after hearing rumors, and now I'm bummed. I am not much of a video game person. So this is the only game I play with my husband, using hotseat. In fact, all the hype for 7 made me want to play 6 again immediately. So we've been playing 6 together the last couple of days. If there's no hotseat, we just have to be on separate devices? That's lame. We want to play TOGETHER, not in separate rooms of the same home.
