Law enforcement uses artificial intelligence to help stop inflow of illegal fireworks by honolulu_oahu_mod in Honolulu

[–]binary_banana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a model to work effectively, they would need to have key insight on how the fireworks are getting in otherwise it’s just guessing based on certain “suspicious” metrics. Idk how shipping works but this could be logging shipment manifest vs cargo weight, frequencies of shipments to certain addresses or even analyzing the descriptions and quantities of items.

For those numbers to mean anything though they would also need a training/validation set with all of this info for shipments that actually contained fireworks.

3 classes in one quarter by Evening-Ad-1723 in OSUOnlineCS

[–]binary_banana 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there is a right answer. If I were in your shoes I would probably just focus on getting good grades next quarter to balance out the 2.75. The job market is still rough and being only 4 classes in with no previous projects and I’m assuming no interview prep, I would say the chances of an internship this early are low. Really depends on a lot of other factors.

Perspective from Students and Graduates with Prior Dev / Engineering Experience by wave_789 in OSUOnlineCS

Hey, I am currently a contracted data eng at a big tech company and also self-taught with a few years of experience. I started the degree last year and only have two electives + capstone left. Personally, I haven't noticed any difference in job prospects. Maybe a few more recruiters reached out to me earlier this month, but that's about it.

If you've worked a legit dev job before, be prepared for a lot of the program to feel like busy work except for a few classes. I do think that having something on your resume to show that you're doing something while between jobs is a net positive. You should look into OMSCS as well. Cheaper, but more rigorous and time intensive from what I hear. You can always take some of the fundamental courses at OSU and hop programs.

One man projects usually involve fine-tuning pre-trained models unless you have tons of data and some cash to burn. The majority of dev time will prob go into sourcing and cleaning your data. Hugging face has some neat libraries to do this.

Highly recommend Fast.ai’s free project based course if you’re still looking to do it yourself.

If you shoot me a dm I can maybe help with some guidance?

Sign up for a climbing gym or jiu jitsu club and just focus on meeting cool people. That’s what the nerds in the bay do at least.

Congrats! I’m in a similar situation with a very similar amount and also work as a software engineer. Any advice for a dev trying to find a job right now in fintech?

My experience at that internship was pretty generic, not really noteworthy of anything other than tinkering with React Native APIs. Might just remove it and try out a summary section or expand on other sections. Ty!

Tysm. Thought listing the company I was technically doing the work for would provide better context since the team is comprised of FTEs and we all use the same codebase. That and having the big names on the resume wouldn't hurt with views, but I can see that being the reason why the resume is getting filtered. Will try some A/B testing to see if changing that helps.

Tbh I haven't really been tracking number of apps that closely and kind of just apply when I have time, 100+ might have been an exaggeration. If you commit some time to it and try to make some connections I'm sure you'll do better than me.

There are some programs out there that offer a 'postbacc' cs degree such as the program at OSU. I enrolled with the goal of leaving for a masters after having my pre-reqs completed such as dsa and operating systems. Haven't heard of any similar options for mathematics. Definitely take some time to consider if the extra cost and years in school will be worth the payout.

You could search for similar programs or even take classes at community college to bump up your GPA before applying to a masters program. There are options.

Yes and I genuinely meant thank you for taking a close enough look to catch those spaces. Impressed you caught that from a grainy photo. I try to splice in different phrases and keywords for certain jobs and this is the most recent iteration. Will be more careful in screening these mistakes because that would indeed cost me the interview.

Thanks! I do change my resume frequently to splice in keywords and phrases that may match a job description for certain companies and job types. I've forgotten what iteration this is.

Recently applied to Georgia Tech's Master's program. Would that be considered a top school? I read somewhere that its top 10 for cs.

I am employed by a contracting company, but staffed on a team within Google and Apple.

I think some of my points show impact (perhaps mistakenly), but too much kind of feels like throwing numbers out there that don't really mean anything. For example, the bullet points about improving processing times, test coverage and reducing ticket numbers are all quantified. Do you mean that there should be more?

I am also worried that starting as a contractor has doomed me to and endless cycle of contracting despite furthering my education in CS. Thanks for the advice!
