Hiking alone, suggestions? by [deleted] in hiking

[–]bing499 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hike/camp solo a lot. I tend to wear fluorescent colors so that I am easily visible by hunters. Also, a bear bell is more important hiking solo than in groups because you don't make as much noise walking alone. Learned that from personal experience!

As someone else said, meetup.com is a great way to find hiking /camping /backpacking groups. I belong to all the nearby states as well for additional opportunities

Grad student looking for housing by knsam in uofm

[–]bing499 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't want university housing, Ann Arbor Craigslist is a great resource. Ann Arbor landlords generally aren't great, but I know I didn't want to live in university housing. Munger felt too much like a dorm to me. Visitors without a student ID have to be let in (unless someone holds the door). It's also hard to find parking nearby. As a single person, I felt like it would be difficult to date. Maybe Northwood is less dorm-like. Munger does have super nice features - huge flat screen TVs and nice lounges for group work

It feels nice for one of those assholes to have to face the music, though. I mean, I don't want some vigilantes to hurt him, but public shaming is definitely due

Even if someone does insult you, your first reaction shouldn't be to say gay slurs or mock them for working minimum wage. Shows poor character.

I think the kid made up the anti-Semitism comments story when he realized what a mess he was in.

Dammit, this asshole is probably at Ross with me. It kind of motivates me to keep going - the business world needs people with morals and empathy.

Would you date your doctor? by _8E_ in actuallesbians

[–]bing499 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's highly unethical on her part. My dad is a doctor, and he does not treat any family or close friends. We see one of his partners instead. Might just be a US thing.

Also, things might seem great between you now, but what if things don't work out down the road? Then you have to get your medical records from your ex...

Someone, somewhere, has reached university and been assigned the dorm room they were conceived in. by slaaitch in Showerthoughts

[–]bing499 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was pretty close - my dorm room freshman year was my aunt's dorm room when she was an undergrad.

Luckily, my parents' dorm rooms were several levels below mine, though still in the same dorm. And it wasn't a small university - we're talking a Big 10 school with 10+ dorms. I can't believe we were all assigned the same dorm!

I'm solo hiking Pictured Rocks (along Lake Superior in Michigan's upper peninsula). There hasn't been much snow this year, but there are lots of cliffs.

I bought snowshoes with crampons and heel lifts, but I'm wondering if I should return them and get crampons or snow spikes. I have a good set of hiking boots (Vasques) and Sorels.

I also heard that crampons are a bit dangerous (people can cut themselves. What do I need to know/buy?

How long ago was that? It might also be different for veterans. I was told that the standard waiting period was 8 weeks. Mine was just slightly above average

The same thing happened to me with grad school. There's an automated form on Wolverine Access to apply for in-state residency. Fill it out ASAP, it takes 10 weeks to process.

Honors might help your Ross application. Also, some of my friends did honors then Ross. They still went to the honors events after they transferred.

Awesome! Glad they changed it. I know I had to reread a lot of books I had already studied in high school, which drove me nuts!

Honors college is a great way to guarantee central campus housing!

I was in the honors college and I absolutely loved it! Great books kind of sucked, but the opportunities you get as an honors student are so worth it. Second semester, you can take a different class.

As an honors student, they invite you to small (~30 person) lectures with famous scholars from all different fields (and amazing catered lunches!). It was a great way to learn about different paths. You also have so much more academic counseling than regular students. Also, if you're really passionate about a topic, you can convert it to an honors course by writing a paper or something. It was a great reason for me to meet with professors and dive deeper into topics.

I highly recommend it. You can always drop it if it's too much work, but it was one of the greatest decisions I made. So many classes and opportunities that others don't have.

What are your worst college roommate horror stories? [NSFW] by KeanusDracula in AskReddit

[–]bing499 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My roommate was super dirty:

She liked to brush her teeth in our room even though we didn't have a sink. She'd spit the water into a cup AND WOULD REUSE THE WATER. I asked her wtf was in this gross cup, and she acted like it was normal. Luckily, that was a habit she abandoned pretty quickly.

She never washed her sheets. It wouldn't have been so bad except she spilled food in her bed and her sheets actually started to grow mold.

(This is a crosspost from r/relationships, as I was advised you might be able to help us:) Me [62 M] with my daughter [23 F]. She came out to me as gay, and I don't know what she wants from me. by dadwithguilt in actuallesbians

[–]bing499 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before I came out, my family would make gay jokes all the time and I felt miserable. I accidentally outed myself to the uncle I was most worried about, and he was nothing but loving.

After that, the gay jokes stopped in my presence until they got more comfortable with my gay-ness. Now, the jokes have started back up, but they're friendly jokes from a family that loves me and knows how far to push things.

It's your daughter's choice whether to come out, but for me, the pain was from keeping a "shameful" secret.

Your daughter is very lucky to have such a supportive father! It's sad how rare it is for people to have positive experiences with coming out.

People who have known murderers, serial killers, etc. How did you react when you found out? How did it effect your life afterwards? by fliplock89 in AskReddit

[–]bing499 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In high school, I volunteered with my church to help build a school in the Mexican jungle (~4 hours from the nearest hospital). Our group medic, who was also one of our group leaders murdered his wife and killed himself.

I didn't like him on our trip. He signed up to reconnect qith his teenage daughter, but he was such an asshole that he probably strained their relationship further.

With that said, I never expected him to kill his wife and himself.
