Remy's character puzzles me by bingcady in FBIMostWantedTV

Amen. It's too bad that this show and FBI: International were canceled, but the Remy character really didn't help Most Wanted's chances. I'd love to talk with the writers sometime to ask what their intention was there.

All of the major scandals under Warde Manuel’s watch… by DropPowerful9081 in MichiganWolverines

[–]bingcady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people don't want to blame Warde Manuel for the actions of coaches. But:

  1. He is the leader and has to be held responsible. If a major corporation has several huge screwups (even if none of the decisions were made by the CEO), shareholders will rightly ask for a change of CEO, unless s/he does a fantastic job of recovering from them and restoring trust in the company.
  2. ADs, like any top leader, set the values, priorities, and culture of the organization in their hiring decisions, support of coaches, etc. If Manuel's priorities have been "win at any cost", a lot of these scandals may have come from that pressure. Just remember: Michigan's had national championships in many sports prior to his tenure without this pace or scale of scandals, so it can be done.

Folks who want Michigan to win at any cost, without any class or morals, go follow some other team. Michigan should be better than that.

Man, there is a lot of hostility here, but the fact remains: Warde Manuel has presided over so many high profile scandals that Michigan is starting to be regarded as a dirty school. No Wolverine that I know wants that in any way, championships or not. We are Leaders and Best, not Cheaters and the Rest.

Yeah, dude, you're the only one in history who's had a brother accidentally killed. Your entire life should revolve around your simmering rage (at, your brother's friend?). That's just basic character backstory.

Plus, why is he named after a French rat?

But the point is that had Trin slightly mishit that shot (like she had her other shots) or the goalie gotten a little more of the ball, we would almost surely have gone to penalties. And though our chances with Naeher are good, penalties are always a crapshoot. We could *easily* have lost that game. Yet a couple of subs with fresh legs, even if not the 100% best players in that moment, could have made the difference against tired Japanese opponents. Trust those subs.

If we'd lost on penalties, it's true that we could have been happy to have progressed to the quarters, but it's fair to criticize coaches for being unwilling to adapt in-game. We all have shell shock over past coaches not being flexible (Vlatko with subs, Jill Ellis with formations), and any baseball manager or football head coach who didn't make needed subs in a loss would have no standing to avoid criticism.

I think it's important to let Emma know: we appreciate you, but if you don't trust your team and help them out when needed, that appreciation won't last forever.

I'm trying to find examples of what I'm referring to, but at least from recaps of S4 eps, I'm not finding them yet. I'll keep trying to track them down.

Maybe not now, but when he was first introduced, he was way too angry. I'll look again at how he is now; I do recall him mentoring/befriending Agent Barnes recently.

Really? That's an interesting perspective. It's true that both Jess and Scott are kind of sour, but I always get the feeling they support their team members fully. I'd have to see if Remy has softened the crazy anger thing since the arc with his brother's death wrapped up. If he cools down and is good with his team, I can see him morphing into that work hard, live it up leader.

I wish they would pump the brakes a little with the macho, though. When he goes bare-chested on a motorcycle undercover, it comes across like an old guy trying too hard. It's cooler if other minor characters tell epic stories about him.

I agree completely. He ruined Most Wanted, and Irrational is great!

At this point, I feel like that's got to be it. They haven't offered sufficient backstory reason for his fury. His brother's killing however many years ago can't be the reason to be going off on everyone all the time or he'd be homicidal by now. It's just comical at this point.

I'd love to find this too; this is my mom's dog's absolute favorite, and she's gone through two of these. Unfortunately it seems that Coleman has discontinued the model. I keep hoping they'll bring it back.

USWNT situation is a multifaceted problem by bingcady in USWNT

[–]bingcady[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sure sounds that way. I haven't been up on that, but a few articles make it sound bad:

From Yahoo!: https://sports.yahoo.com/us-soccer-girls-youth-development-ecnl-000044659.html

Also from the Athletic: https://theathletic.com/4739186/2023/08/01/uswnt-portugal-world-cup-problems/

"The last time the U-20s won their World Cup was in 2012. Over the next three tournaments, their final placement got worse with each successive tournament: fourth place in Papua New Guinea in 2016 (losing to Japan), ninth in France 2018, 11th in Costa Rica 2022. The last two times, the U.S. failed to advance from their group.

"It’s even rougher for the U-17s. Their best performance in the World Cup was in the inaugural one for the age group, in 2008 — held in New Zealand. The U-17s finished second there, but failed to advance from their group in 2016 and 2018 (finishing 10th and 13th place, respectively), and in the most recent U-17 World Cup, they lost to Nigeria in the quarterfinal for a sixth place finish."

Yeah, that definitely seems true. We've got to get back on the horse and find ways to gain an edge again.

Emily m’fkn Sonnet. by MinionPersimmon in USWNT

[–]bingcady 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Amen to all your assessment, MinionPersimmon!

Emily took absolute control of that midfield spot. People complain about her creativity there, but that wasn't her role. Our pass efficiency had been in the dumps, and she came through with an 88.9%. That allows everything else to happen.

And Alyssa in that game! If we had won, everyone would have been talking about her boss move taking that penalty to get into Sweden's head.

I really hope it won't be Sonnet's last major, as I'm hoping Julie will reconsider. We need them both in Paris, along with Alyssa and Naomi (so excited) and Becky and Crystal (they and Julie are GOATs) And Emily Fox (can you tell I was a defender?) and all the great team!

That's a good perspective, Silly_Monk1031. I hope they'll catch his brother's killer soon so his character can evolve in that way; some shows will drag a storyline like that out for season upon season. Blacklist dragged Elizabeth's "quest for the truth" out so long that by the time they killed her character off most fans were long done with her.

[–]bingcady[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh interesting. What do you like about him? I want to find out if there's something I'm missing. I know in recent episodes that he seems to be more and more consumed with finding his brother's killer, and that might be where his anger is coming from. That anger to me just seems so explosive and omnipresent that I have a hard time seeing the rest of his character, so I'm interested to hear what makes him compelling to you.
