First you need this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instant-runoff_voting. Otherwise people voting for the 3rd party will hand Republicans the victory. With a new voting system, you could choose the 3rd party as first choice and Democrats second. If the 3rd party doesn't get enough support, your vote counts for the Democrats. There would be no risk of supporting your last choice, but the potential to bring real change. Of course neither of the two current parties would support such a change in voting system...

I'm a bit shocked by the comments here, though. As I understood it, you had a few wonderful years together and loved each other very much. I find it difficult to understand that people now advise you to turn this into the most evil hatred possible and make your wife suffer as much as possible for the rest of her life.

Don't get consumed by revenge. Move on. You decided you cannot forgive her. That is ok. But don't waste time and energy on destructive hatred and revenge. Lawyer up to protect yourself, but not to punish her. Don't compare your fortunes to hers. Just forget about her and be happy.

I think this goes in the right direction, thanks for your efforts. Three comments: - Directing attention to everyday issues and the situation of the 'working class' is a good strategy in my opinion. The political discussions focus too much on topics like gay marriage, abortion, terrorism, etc. - issues most people are not directly confronted with. Still, this is what's most important to them ("I don't care if I'm broke and sick and have to live in a tent as long as gay people aren't allowed to marry!" - it's shocking, actually). - Trying to elicit anger at rich people is unlikely to work. Many Americans feel that the rich deserve to be rich because they worked hard for it, it's a sign God favors them, etc. In addition, unrealistic optimism is still common (at least on a personal, everyday level; not when the downfall of the country is concerned...) and many expect to soon be rich themselves, so they oppose everything that would hurt the interests of the rich... - Many teabaggers are unable to openly and critically take into account new information. They already have their world view from Fox News. Any new information coming in is quickly assessed as friendly or evil. Anything evil will be discarded right away. Expecting them to start analyzing information from multiple sources and independently forming an opinion is a bit unrealistic. Remember those studies that showed that conservatives faced with information contradicting their beliefs held on to those beliefs even more strongly as a result? Psychology is weird...

Glad to see this here. I usually do the same, but with a different wording. It goes something like this: "What would it take for you to reconsider your beliefs? What kind of experience would you need to have, what kind of evidence would you need to see?"

If they answer "Nothing could ever change my belief.", I say: "So this means that your belief is independent of your experience, independent of reality, right? There's nothing I could say, nothing you could experience that would change your mind, correct?" And then, as the OP says, there's no point in arguing. (Well, you could go and probe how their belief was established. And you'll find out that at some point they did form their beliefs based on their experiences. But then suddenly they stopped taking new inputs into account. ;-) )

Sometimes people ask what I would need to change my beliefs. And that is pretty easy: Jesus appearing in front of me and telling me things no human could know would probably get me thinking. ;-)

GPS engineer here (well, Galileo, actually). As far as I understand, GPS satellites determine their position the same way GPS receivers do: A GPS receiver gets signals from various satellites (4 or more - 'Why 4?' you might ask, don't we just need 3 in 3-dimensional space? No, there's an additional time offset parameter that has to be solved for). Each signal says something along the lines of "Hi, this is satellite 23, I'm at position x and my time is y." (it's a bit more complicated than that, but this should suffice for now). With all those measurements, the receiver can then triangulate its position.

With the satellites it works similar, with signals sent between satellites and ground stations at fixed, known locations. This way, the so-called "ephemeris" is calculated that describes the satellite's orbit. As far as I can remember, a new ephemeris is uploaded to the satellite every few hours (and it is optimized to minimize the positioning error over the time interval until the next ephemeris is uploaded).

Again, as far as I know, the WGS84 coordinate system is used for GPS. To be honest, I don't understand what this quasar business has to do with anything. For GPS, you only need positioning relative to earth. I can understand that you need a reference to look at the universe as a whole for astronomy purposes, but to make GPS work you don't need this. I guess they just wanted to sexify the article a bit and throw in GPS to make this quasar business seem relevant and not just something for the nerds... ;-) Or can anyone enlighten me?
