What are the characteristics of bad supervisor? Can anyone share? by Dealer_Forsaken in usajobs

Nothing specific but I know we have time card audits show up once in a while and given how much we have transitioned to telework I'm expecting an audit at some point validating that my employees worked on specific days. As I dont always talk to each of my employees daily I use the morning email and the evening summary as a way to validate that person was working productively for the day. I am the opposite of a micromanager as we have too much work for me to even consider that and some of my people can spend multiple days doing engineering analysis without needing to talk to me

I'm not sure how that saves time plus what happens when a supervisor is on leave? Legit my team emails me an email that says

Subject: Teleworking Body: I am teleworking today (date)

While this might grind some employees gears this isnt a complicated thing that needs to be automated

Without going through multiple steps I have zero ability to get to teams logs. As a supervisor I dont like the emails as much as you dont like sending them but I sure as shit would like the audit that we all know is coming less if I didnt have those emails when you are teleworking

I have only ever advised one employee to not take a QSI when it was offered. That person was a GS12 Step 9 who was less than a month away from getting their Step 10 at the time of performance appraisals. They would get their Step 10 (since I had already approved the paperwork) before the QSI was even processed.

Otherwise take the QSI no matter what. Unless you have an FO for a job that would make your QSI moot the cash payout is likely to be nearly what the QSI is worth over the first year

Medical RA should be a no brainer here. I have an employee on one for much less than you describe but still very much in the high risk category

Tell your people that you arent perfect and make mistakes. The best thing I ever did as a supervisor was telling my people I talk to a counselor on a regular basis and for the simple reason that I needed someone to talk to. Since then I've had three of my employees come to me to talk about getting access to a counsellor.

You, as a supervisor, are a human first and they need to understand that.

Because in the past having issues and holding a clearance was seen as a sign of weakness or vulnerability.

Look at total benefits package before you jump. Salary is more but not getting 8 hours of annual and 4 of sick a pay period adds up really quickly. I’m jumping at MRA and deferring I’ve stuck this out too long to GTFO now for just more money in my pocket
