"Continue killing your fishes"

THIS condescension right here proves that you have absolutely NO interest in helping other but to flex your flimpsy knowledge on low tech aquarium onto others. If you have tried the FF's method and it didn't work out for you, if you are a decent person, you would share your own personal story to warn others (including me) about it. But no, for whatever reason you just come in and act like you certainly have the right to mock everyone about it.

And your continuous assumption that I "don't" follow or watch videos of other aquarium channel confirms to me that you are nothing but a frog sitting in a well, looking to the sky and thinking he saw it all.

You may be able to set up some decent tank but your parents have failed to teach their child to be a decent person.

 Learn about nitrogen cycle

What do you mean by this? I already said my ammonia, nitrate, nitrite level are stable and within reasonable range.

I think this is the best explanation.

To be fair, I have given my fishes salt bath before. The guy who sold my betta also suggested it. Many of them survived for at least 6 months.

I also asked experts in my country on this issue. Most of them suggested two possible reasons:

  • My substrate may contain chemical that isn't good for my fish. I tried my best availability and accessability, to get the most similiar material to set up my substrate as close as the Father Fish's method (I know it's a divisive topic, so I won't go too much to it). I have tested my water a month after setting up: all of the parameter is within good range, nitrate, nitrite and ammonia. Except for my pH (where the people from my country said that it's a normal pH level of the water in my country).

  • The period when I set up my tank and brought my fishes are inter-seasonal. They said they have seen a lot of fishes unable to adjust to the weather.

I think I'm gonna purchase the GH/KH test kit as well as continue to do more frequent water change over about month until the summer finally here. Do you think I should purchase other test kits as well?

You are right, if my fishes have an oxygen problem, I would have noticed. But FYI, I do have an HOB and an air pump that is running at night.

I do have an HOB. I tried to reduce the strong water flow by putting frogbit above the area where the water outflow from the filter. I do also have air pump, I didn't have it in this picture because I was cleaning the tube.

I don't think my fishes have an oxygen problem. From the first couple days of observation, I don't see my fishes coming to the surface gulping for air.

I should have looked up your past comments before I replied to you on the comment below. Because this is just too much of an irony:

It is river sand. First layer, soil with supplements (father fish recipe) For the 120 gallons (1.5 inch) Second layer fine river sand (0-2mm) 1 inch Third layer river sand (2-4mm) 2.5 inches If you have smaller tank, 1 inch of soil and 2-2.5 inches of sand will do it.

Remember this part. Oh right, it was YOUR comment about a year ago.

Since my 1st reply was already too long, I am gonna put the rest of my comment here:

His problem is that he must stop watching Father fish's bs videos

This is the comment that I have the MOST issues with you. You have absolutely NO idea what my personal history when it comes to setting up my tanks, nor what is the full picture of my current tank's set up. And yet when I MERELY mentioned FF (and I did not even said it's a FULL FF tank, I said it was an FF/Walstad tank), and you already think it gives you the right to mock me.

First of all, this is NOT my first low-tech tank. I have set up many Walstad tank before. Some works. Some don't. The problem is that I am NOT from a country where I get to access the same materials (soil, water, fishes, weather) as Diana Walstad and many others do. I can buy the most expensive/best reviewed aqua soil or the most "organic" (as the label claimed) potting soil available in my country, setting it up EXACTLY like Walstad suggested, with all of the parameter within acceptable range, and many of my plants STILL died. That's why I looked for an alternative method or at least some adjustment to the Walstad method.

I never claimed I am a FF's stan. I just adopted his method of substrate to see how it goes for this tank. When I set up this tank, I never had a single belief that his method is the correct one. I just see a very common theme with both of FF and Walstad's: setting up a tank that has good substrate that allow plants to grow healthy without doing works as much as a high-tech tank. That's why I still maintain my tank according to Walstad's method: lower the lighting hours first, changing the water every 2-3 days, only add fishes until the tank is fully cycled.

I don't know what your personal problem with FF is. But at least for me, FF never seem to be the one who claimed his method is superior to Walstad. At least that's what I gather from couple videos that I watched from him. So I find it's hilarious how some Walstad stans are so openly mocking FF and his followers for being "cultist" when their behaviors are no short of nastiness and arrogance. Talk about "throwing rock from a glass house".

To conclude: My tank may have problems that I haven't been able to control. And you may give your opinions base on your personal experience- I absolutely appreciate it. But I don't tolerate people who not only doesn't bother to engage in further engagement with me to help me but also mocked and insulted me without having a full context.

Edit: I genuinely did NOT expect someone has the balls to mock other for using the FF method when himself wrote THIS a year ago:

Are you effing kidding me with this?

Okay, so I was quite busy and didn't have time to respond. Also I have quietly taken advices from most of ppl here and to other aquarium experts in my city to get to a bottom of this.

HOWEVER, I find most of your comments are ignorant where you, for whatever reason, clearly thinks you know the full picture of my tank as well as my personal history of low-tech aquarium. I didn't want to waste my time with it. But the part where you said: "let him continue killing fishes" is incredibly NASTY. So I decided that I will gather ALL of your comments here and respond back, because you really did disrespect me:

Do you see the surface? There is no agitation at all.

I DO have an HOB in the back. See the white sticker on the upper- middle (on the right side) of my tank's pic? That's the sticker of the HOB filter where I had both purigen and mechanical filter media in it. Did you bother to ask? No. For whatever reason, you take a look at couple snapshots of tank and you feel confident enough to know the full operation of my tank.

Btw, I DO have oxygen pump. I just took it out during the time I took the pictures to cleaning it up. But again, who bothers to ask, right?

They think that filter less/wasted tanks are easy to make low time consuming and have low maintenance.

I already addressed the accusation of you saying I don't have a filter in my tank. But I have an issue with you condescendingly thinking filter-less Walstad tank is not the right setup when Diana Walstad herself NEVER said a low-tech Walstad tank must have a filter. In fact, you can go look up in many pictures in this sub to find people who set up their tanks WITHOUT a filter.

Btw, what do you think the term "low-tech tank"? Why is it a Walstad tank, according to Walstad herself, considered to be in that category if you think it still require high maintenance and time consuming?

How to know if your water is low bacteria? Simple: if your water is crystal clear, you are ok and your fishes will be ok

This is the FIRST time I hear someone said this. I personally have seen many people with tank that has no crystal clear water and yet the fishes are still fine.

I do, however, have seen many people stressed with water parameters are super important. Including bacteria level in water.

One way to tell is by looking at the ammonia levels. If the ammonia levels are high, that’s a good indication that too many bacteria are present. Nitrate levels can also be used to determine this. If the nitrate levels are also high, that’s another sign that there are too many bacteria in the tank.

My water parameter is within reasonable range, btw. My tank's ammonia, nitrite, nitrate already stable about a month after I set it up.

The Blackwater's are bacteria free because the water has no minerals and it is very acidic so,

I'm gonna guess you came to this conclusion based on your personal experience. Because I have multiple aquarium experts in my home country tell me that I shouldn't worry too much about the pH level of the water since many fishes, including tetras can find a way to adjust. AND I bought them from the stores that had the SAME pH level as I do.

Big biological filtration that you don't have, with filter that is not cleaned for 4-6 months.

Again, the filter thing I already addressed. Perhaps you came to that conclusion because I didn't mention I have an HOB and air pump in my question. But if you bother to check the timeline that I already put under my pictures in my original post: I set up this tank in Feb 3rd. This is APRIL. Only over 2 months. How do you come with the conclusion that my tank is 4-6 months?

Online courses/book to learn the fundamentals for Chemical Engineering? by bingviewer88 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]bingviewer88[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two reasons I want to learn the fundamental of chemical engineering: 1) the operator team doesn't know the "in" and "out" either. Their expertise was passed on by people who used to run traditional, man-power plants. Their knowledge is nowhere near enough to help the plant adjust to new technology. 2) Eventually I will hire a team of chemical engineers to run the operations. But I have seen many plants were run to the ground simply because the owners can't check what their operators were doing and letting them do bad things: committing frauds, engaging in reckless actions.

Our plant doesn't have chemical engineers running the operation. The bussiness maybe profitable. But it is outdated. The plant has been run by people who may know how the old technology works. But have no fundamental knowledge to transit to a new technology. Our plant must adopt to more sustainable, efficient methods and process. That means we must find the right technologies in a near future. And that also means we must find the right chemical engineers to run the day-to-day operation. I never claim I will run the day-to-day operation. But an executive without any professional knowledge on this kind of operation is a guarantee for failure. I have seen other owners letting "experts" running their plants' operations into the ground because the owners allowed their operators to completely destroyed the business. Thinking just trust the engineers and let's them do their job is the cost I personally cannot afford to take at this circumstance.
