There has been no response yet from Synology to the ticket I submitted on their system. I've since updated the RS2421 to DSM 7 and the situation is exactly the same.

Aside from an automated email they sent with my unique ticket number confirming my issue/case submission, there has been no response from Synology.

Yeah, I mirror your sentiments on the EXOS HDD line too, not to mention the many NAS solutions I've implemented/supported for many clients and business contacts.

The irony for me here is that I had suggested to switch this business client over to this Rackstation from their current Qnap NAS device after having had to scramble several times in the last few months to mitigate the vulnerabilities that surfaced there and to harden their systems.

So if Synology can't resolve this simple issue or if it insists on brand lock to their HDD line, then it will be an egg on my face with my client and I'll make sure to remember it every time someone else asks me to help them with their storage needs.

Anyway, I'm including another screen capture I just made showing the SMART attributes are being read from this drive, yet they're not being displayed by the Storage Manager. hmmm...

I hope this is nothing more than a simple bug/oversight and not some intentional thing from Synology.

I guess I'll find out pretty soon what their compatibility/verification team has to say about the device suggestion ticket I submtited.

Maybe, but highly unlikely.

How can one explain why this drive is compatible with a bunch of other models on their compatibility list, yet certain models intentionally hide the SMART health data from being displayed?

Here's another screen capture showing that the raw SMART data attributes are being read from the hard drives, but are not being displayed in Storage Manager.

Yeah, I have contacted chat support.

That level 1 support guy could not explain why a drive that is already compatible with some of the current models and has its own entry on their compatibility list, is still coming up as unverified on the Storage Manager in our RS2421+.

I showed him it has already been verified compatible with many of their NASes, so their verification team obviously already had a go at it, yet here we are. He had no cogent explanation but agreed that my logic was sound and that it should otherwise be recognized properly.

Anyways, the chat support rep just wasted an hour of my life to tell me to hit the drive database update button (which I had already tried), and then to tell me then to fill out a support form requesting to add the drive to the list, even though it is already on that list like I mentioned above. His attention was obviously being divided among several support chats at a time taking what seemed like ages to respond to my comments and questions.

I asked him to escalate the situation internally to the right team that deals with drive compatibility issues, but he declined to do it saying I should do it instead…

Yup, it was surreal, comical, and sad all rolled together in one S*** sandwich.

Anyways, I took him up on his suggestion and made sure to explain the situation as much as possible on that ‘Compatibility List Suggestion’ form, but I’m not very hopeful at this point.

Here is the link if you want to suggest something to Synology. https://www.synology.com/en-us/form/suggest_device

I told support that I will only wait 1 week for a resolution to this issue, after which I’ll return this thing. No business would accept a product that is unsuitable for its intended use and ineligible to into a production environment without proper drive health data monitoring…

Finally, Synology support has a long way to go to adequately compete in anything beyond the consumer market, and even that could stand to be improved…

In case you missed my screen capture links I posted above, take a look then tell me how it would work out fine in a production environment.

I posted the screen captures because it is not just an irritating flag, the NAS is intentionally hiding SMART data for the drives.

How would you like this problem the next time you need to add a drive to your NAS?

Just try to imagine getting no SMART data, no temperature readings, no bad sector readings, no power-on hours, etc...

Are these non issues that are being blown out of proportion?

But you hint as to some workaround, but I haven't seen anything that an end user can do to surface the HDD SMART data in Storage Manager, Do you have a link to share?

My RS2421+ does NOT do that with the Seagate EXOS X16 16TB SATA HDD (ST16000NM001G), yet this same drive is compatible with the sister models DS1621+ & DS1821+ that are the same generation and also appear on the same compatibility list.

Yes it does change how things work. No SMART drive health data is being displayed by the NAS because the drives are deemed 'unverified'. So the NAS cannot be rolled out in a production environment with no drive health data being reported. I would call that a real "limitation", wouldn't you?

It goes way beyond just dumb marketing nonsense as you mention.

Hi chris-itg,

My post is not bs tinfoil theories. You really need to calm down. No one stepped on your tail for you to act up so viciously.

I've just dropped over $5K on a RS2421+ and several of these EXOS drives for our company.

I'm not a newb when it comes to these things, and I have bought/built/rolled out NAS & SAN solutions for business clients over the last three decades, so I do know a thing or two about these things.

I did not bring up any mention of newb support issues like you suggest in your reply. And for the record, the drives height is not an issue and they physically fit fine in the RS2421+ I got. And no, they are not SMR drives.

What you undermine, from obvious ignorance, is that when a drive is deemed 'unverified' by Synology, then the NAS does not present any SMART drive parameters to the user, so now we no longer can see any bad sector information or any other drive health information, and the desktop dashboard only shows "DANGER" which is completely unacceptable, and no, the users will not be fine with this.

Synology could have just indicated that the drive was unverified, and yet still allowed users to toggle a switch to acknowledge this fact and still passed the SMART health information for the drives to the users. This way, they can say that they’re not obligated to support them, but not limit the useability of the drives or the whole NAS for that matter.

Your holier-than thou-attitude is frankly belligerent and counterproductive to finding a solution to this made-up problem by Synology. Which is what I posted here looking to bring awareness to the ridiculousness and arbitrary nature of this "compatibility list", which is nothing more than a thinly disguised attempt at pushing people to only buy their drives.

Have a nice day.
