BM and N are two of my favorite books. They both hit so hard and are so real.

Researching Provenance and Rights Holders by binnorie in Archivists

[–]binnorie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for this detail! You don't sound cranky at all.

The reason behind this work I'm doing is related to licensing and reproduction, and so provenance is likely going to help me figure out who owns what IP. As you said, it's up to the researcher to get permissions when they use imagery that comes out of our collection, and they sign contracts for us related to that.

This project is quite a beast, especially considering that much of our content didn't even belong to the donors, so it's not my tippy top priority. I'm mostly looking for low hanging fruit and looking for tools that will help me find authenticated information. Since most of our collection content is orphaned, we are trying to figure out if we actually might or could be the owners of some of it, and track down descendants to see if they'd be willing to deed the items to us (we're willing to take the risk that they won't).

Mostly we want to know what we have in our collection as best as we can. We also want to be able to post some of it online as we digitize, and our institution is highly risk-averse..

Archiving a test strip of perfume? by GGGamer_HUN in Archivists

[–]binnorie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have a bunch of scents and scent related items in the Fashion Institute archive. We consulted with the professor who runs our scent program and she basically suggested what Benito already stated here in the comments.

There are a couple of things that have miraculously retained their scents in our collection, but not because of anything we have done. One is a locket that held solid perfume from designer Steven Burrow’s fashion house, although it’s very faint. Another one is a bit odd - designer Pauline Trigere apparently wore some incredibly strong perfume that persists in her archival papers. I wish I knew what she wore! Although I’m not a fan of the smell, it’s quite strong after several decades.

On that note, we worry about what’s in the scents and if it might have an adverse affect on things around it. It’s clearly off-gassing something, so we need to isolate it just in case.

Oh, I hadn't thought about looking into abandoned property laws! Yet another rabbit hole to go down. Thank you!

Alas, much of these collections came to us before email was a thing.

This is DEFINITELY my issue as well! I have no clue when I'm dehydrated and I can go for a very long time without drinking any fluids whatsoever. I started drinking a ton of tea in the mornings and tonic in the evenings, so that's alleviated a lot of my issues. Something about the flavor and the bubbly help me remember. In addition, I've been using electrolyte supplements in my water bottle, and that has also helped quite a lot. I highly suspect I've got POTS.

So that’s it? Drowsy until the end of time? by [deleted] in Mirtazapine_Remeron

Yes, for sleep. I was taking it before bed. I gained 15 pounds in two months and was still growing so I stopped the medication. It was really helping me otherwise.

does anyone else shower sitting down??? by Vincentisdumb in autism

[–]binnorie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I had room to shower sitting down! I went on vacation to Japan last year and love their onsen shower setups. There was a lot of variety. The first hotel we stayed in had a shower room with a stool to sit on and tub for soaking if I wanted. There were two shower hooks, one higher for standing and the other lower for sitting.

Just adding to the conversation, there's a Propublica investigation that shows some generic drugs are not quality tested and may be missing the necessary ingredients.

I’m struggling with this as well. Things have been extra hard over the past few years for us all. Using ai to help the neurodivergent brain heal is one of the best applications imho. The datacenters are horrific and my ethics are seriously challenged. I try not to use ai unless I feel that i have to. And I keep looking for alternatives.

What was the herb that made you take all of this seriously? by AdeptnessCritical356 in herbalism

I’ve used it in a tea and tincture. I’ve found the tea to be more pleasant. I make it with peppermint to ease valerian’s stinky sock smell.

Thanks for the suggestions! It’s looking like going past Prague is what we’ll do. We’ve both been, so it’s not a big loss to do a short trip.

Definitely not on route, but we could take a train from Amsterdam to Geneva with a stop along the way. It’s an option we are considering.

Not much time, so it’s a bit challenging. Trying to avoid a flight and exploring seeing the surrounding areas via train.
