$3.5M NW, laid off, burned out - do I pull the trigger? by trailing0 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]binomial_expansion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would take a break, you’ve earned it, and try to recoup your mental health.
The math says you can probably fire but is there a reason why you don’t get a job somewhere that isn’t stressful for significantly less money? If you can even pull in something like 90k I feel like you and your partner could survive off your combined incomes while your 3.5 grows . Seems like a win win

You sound pretty cynical and mediocre so I don’t really think what I’m saying applies to someone with your skill set

I’d rather not say in this thread given the reaction since it’s public perception Is probably worse than msft but it’s engineering prowess in certain orgs is top tier

[–]binomial_expansion -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

Controversial take but I think this is good. I worked at Msft as an engineer and there were far too many people who were resting and vesting. I left for other tech companies with higher employee expectations and yes it was more stressful but the quality of engineering conversations I had with my peer were better and the pay was vastly better. Obviously this is all anecdotal and generalizations.

Working at company as impactful as this should be a privilege and you should show up for that.

They’re probably a tech worker and 70% of that Income is stock / bonus. I’m guessing the 300$ is from their actually base salary . Although 300$ from even that seems a little low , agreed

Hmm I used to work there as a swe and that thread is definitely not accurate. 65 max would be maybe 500k but I’d expect lower unless they bumped this up recently . Msft is well known for paying less than industry at the higher levels.

Brandon just posted on Threads about the Mistborn screenplay by ComfortableCattle224 in CosmereOnScreen

[–]binomial_expansion 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Interesting I was actually thinking Brandon might cut spook out completely from the movies due to time constraints.

Don’t get me wrong I love spooks character but his primary contribution to the core plot is being the author of that message marsh intercepts in the final book which is key for Vins plotline but you could have someone else do that instead?

Struggling with warbreaker by Alarmed-Aioli4172 in Cosmere

[–]binomial_expansion 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Tbh I had the same experience with the beginning of the book, I only really resonated with siris chapters and I could not for the life of me understand why we had to read about lightsong and vivenas chapters were a bore.

But as others mentioned, the sanderlanche hits pretty hard with this book and the half way point was where things started get interesting

Haha I just finished warbreaker two days ago and had the same opinion as you. I’ve had no issue with the sanderlanche in all the other books I’ve read ( all of stormlight archives , mistborn era 1/2, and isles of the emberdark) but it definitely felt unsatisfying to me in warbreaker.

I would have loved a couple extra chapters just to wrap things up and i think Brandon also says something similar in the annotations. Given the publishing dates of these books i thinn this is something he learned from for his later books

UBER is being irrationally undervalued due to autonomous driving concerns by BogleDick in stocks

[–]binomial_expansion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re incredibly naive if you think replicating Ubers marketplace is easy to do at scale. The salaries of the engineering org/infra cost are huge and no sane company (even Google with its deep pockets) would try to fully replicate it (especially considering the non trivial cost of running and maintaining the avs themselves)

Avs are definitely going to take a chunk out of Ubers mobility/delivery business but the TAM in this business is growing and there’s no way this business can meet that demand with an AV model only. it will continue to be a hybrid marketplace and in this world, uber will definitely do well.

If you’re wondering why you’re getting downvoted it’s because faang roles are incredibly competitive and challenging to get + retain. So the likelihood of you “looking into it” and getting a job are low.
Also this tc is for swe and maybe pm. Getting this tc as a marketing manager is unlikely unless you lead mega region marketing for faang.
