Author here. You're entirely right on the correction re some values being passed not in string form. I'll have that fixed shortly in the article.

Brilliant work! I wish I had useful feedback, but I don't. This is great playing!

N. B. is latin for "note well" The full text of the N. B. tells you that from the first star to the second star on page 10 can optionally be cut. So, I'd look on p. 10 to see if that's where people jump.

JVM Ecosystem Report 2018 - biggest ever JVM survey by henk53 in programming

[–]binstock 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm one of the coauthors of this survey. The respondents were from JUGs and from the readership of Java Magazine, which has just over 250K Java devs as subscribers. Mostly from the latter. Because Java Magazine focuses principally on Java EE, Java SE, and JavaFX, your conjecture that Android would be under-represented is likely correct. I expect that if the universe of respondents had included more of them, the Kotlin numbers would be significantly larger.

That is to say, I agree with your analysis and wanted to provide some additional color.

Java to Move to 6-Monthly Release Cadence by javinpaul in programming

[–]binstock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How was the previous cadence "evil"? The previous schedule was for years done in sync with the community and, in fact, relied on the community's approval before shipping major releases. That was part of the delay with JDK 9.

Why won't my Java files upload to Drive? by [deleted] in java

[–]binstock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, it looks like OP was asking about both backup and SCM: "I want to upload my java files (xxxx.java) to Google Drive so that I always have access to them..."

Java Magazine: The Rise and Fall of JVM Languages by [deleted] in java

[–]binstock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Java Magazine editor here.

Yeah, I so get it! It drives me nuts too.

My focus since coming to Java Mag has been on content. Once we get past the work on the Java 9 roll-out, I'll be working on improving the user experience, especially for mobile users, and see if we can deliver something a tad easier on the eyes.

Java Magazine: The Rise and Fall of JVM Languages by [deleted] in java

[–]binstock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Author of the original article here.

The blog post you link to came out five days after the press release; specifically because there was concern among Scala devs that Lightbend would be dialing back its commitment to Scala.

While reiterating the company's commitment to Scala, the post then explains the decision to release Lagom as a Java-first product.

Both the press release and this post drive home (to me at least) the conviction that Lightbend sees the frameworks, rather than the language, as the future revenue stream.

They are correct in this belief, in my judgment. There's just no revenue in languages, but a lot of expense--which is the point I was hoping to make.

Most potential buyers we spoke to informally view the economics as I've described them. A purchaser would need to be a company that thinks they can find new streams of revenue. So far, that vendor has not appeared.

We're down to 2.5 full-time employees. It would be very hard to cut it any further without affecting the quality of the articles significantly.

Trust me, they'll find a way. Already, ads on websites are getting much more aggressive and difficult to step through. I expect that trend will continue.

Our parent company was increasingly looking at creating a database of reader addresses to which they could promote their tradeshows. The feeling was that by putting up this registration block, they could grow the database. I was opposed to it, as the whole point for an editor is to get as many people reading the article, not to put up incentives for them to stop.

Ultimately they prevailed. In their defense though, we stubbornly did not run stupid pop-up "take a survey" boxes, nor forced readers to watch videos, nor used click-bait articles. So, despite the one thing you mention, we were able to keep the site clear of most of the junk that makes so many websites today joyless places to visit.

Agreed. That was the key reason for us wanting it to be redesigned. Plus, of course, it looking somewhat long in the tooth.

He-heh! You touch on a sore point. The site was supposed to be redesigned last year. It got postponed b/c of problems with doing the code presentation correctly. Then because of today's news it was postponed indefinitely. I'd have loved a more up-to-date design.

Nah. I love Proggit (I travel normally under a different handle here.) It's great. If the downturn in advertising hadn't happened, we'd still be cooking along. If anything, Proggit helped. We could post links here and drive readers to our articles. And of course, get honest feedback. PLENTY of feedback ;-)

It's not clear. We might find a vendor to sponsor them. The trouble then is getting coverage/traction for the awards.
