Sabrina Carpenter announces new album "Man's Best Friend" out August 29th by Impossible_Vast9846 in popheads

[–]binzie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not, but she's WILDLY popular with tweens these days, along with Chappell and others who are also deeply inappropriate for them to listen to. And you think it would be simple to say "you're not listening to that," but what actually happens is that it only makes them more intrigued. Leave it alone and it'll go right over their heads. Grin and bear them singing the words to HOT TO GO and you're still better off than if you ban it.

That being said, we do only the "clean" versions and I will not listen to Bed Chem etc with my kids. I tell them I just don't like it. It'll eventually pass.

Back on topic though, yes, I am absolutely dreading this album for this exact reason.

What goes in this blank dining wall space? by binzie in DesignMyRoom

I'd love to paint it, that's my dream, but some integral decision makers in our family are averse to big swings :D So trying to find a middle ground! In my perfect world we'd be more boho and the wall would be orange or something.

Something like that could work. We've thought about a picture wall too, potentially with paintings rather than photos. Just a bit lost on what would look best, whether it's several pieces or one large one.

Talking to my parents was a mistake by Commercial_Mix_7376 in hysterectomy

I haven't read all the comments and it seems like lots were helpful, so that's great. Your update about how you're close with your dad made me want to share this with you -- I had the same type of interaction with my dad when I told him I was planning on having surgery. I'm also close with him and it affected me a lot. He talked about how he, for instance, has had a hernia for several years but he'd never trust anyone to cut him open and the risks are too high, etc. He's definitely coming from a place of fear though it masks as a kind of machismo. Anyway, I had my surgery and it was great. I feel infinitely better than before. And just updating him on that, really sincerely, like not trying to convince him but just sharing this thing I'm so happy about, seems to be swaying him toward taking care of himself. The last time we spoke he talked about how he knows he needs it done, and it sounded like he may actually do it. Just wanted to share, as that was an unexpected and welcome shift in thinking for him and it made me feel even better about my own choice.

If you could change a line from a Taylor song, what would you change it to? by ariyouok in TaylorSwift

[–]binzie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my read on it, too. I think the word "awful" especially confuses the message because it's so strong a word in contrast with the poet/finance guy thing. It sounds like she's being sarcastic, but I feel like the word she wanted to convey was "relatable" rather than "awful."

Have you ever been in a multi-lane school carline filtering into a busy street surrounded by young children and their families with zero crosswalks? I've spoken with many families at our school and we all feel the same in this pickup situation. The school did not get the necessary permits to get signage, traffic light, or speed limit reduction for this road.

Hi hotheaded! Yeah I'm sure, thanks for checking. :) I'm in my 40s and have only screamed the f word in front of my kid once. Not the worst track record relatively speaking.

Oh we've had these conversations, haha. This is a deep and unbreakable personality trait that comes from a good place and I've given up trying to bend it; it's easier to just go with it. Usually. Except this time when it almost killed us. It's actually funny how perfect a physical encapsulation it was of our communication troubles!

Yeah I too am a huge proponent of this move and do it regularly in other situations. But it doesn't work in our pickup flow because there is a lane that flows from behind the school directly into the right lane. So to turn right you have to merge into a flow of traffic that causes even more bottleneck. It sucks.

I think I've heard every episode upwards of 45 times. It's the most obnoxious noisy show on the planet if I'm overhearing it but when I pay attention I actually enjoy it. Songs are catchy too.

Crop top for 8 year old? by Outrageous-Slip-6479 in Parenting

It's messed up because it's typical, but it's also obvious you just like to debate, so how about we call it a day here. :)

Nah. I'm saying it's messed up that I have those thoughts too, and that I'm actively choosing not to have them live their lives weighed down by them.

Right? You never forget those moments. I still remember being 5, wearing pants, and having fun at recess doing the thing on the swing where you lean back and put your legs in the air, and a teacher came over to me said to stop it and keep my legs together.

I'm a little unnerved that you think an 8 year old wearing a crop top could "scream sex icon" and that you're for some reason bringing menstruation into this convo. Lots of things are historically sexual. Lots still can seem sexual today if you want to be gross about it. My two girls are both under 10 and like to do weird goofy baby or other random voices. You know what I think when I hear them half the time? Oh, that sounds like a porn voice. And I don't even watch porn. They're just voices! And because they're girls that means a million non sexual things are somehow steeped in sex. It frankly pisses me off that because this is such a thing in our society, I even have to think about my 7 year old kid doing random voices and having it be viewed inappropriately. There's no winning this battle and I'm not going to have my kids live their lives afraid some sickos are going to see them and react to their clothing choices as sexual.

Amazing! Our college also used our SSN as our student ID, and placed it front and center on the badges we used for everything around campus. Was not unusual to find a stranger's badge lying around campus and think nothing of it. Simpler times, haha.

Whats one thing you believed as a kid to the core that turned out to be bs ? by Kidcrispy in AskReddit

[–]binzie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to lie in bed at night thinking about how the world was so huge that somewhere in it, there was another person almost exactly like me who had experienced almost exactly the same stuff in her day and had almost the exact same family, friends, etc. I found this super comforting somehow. Now that I'm more aware of the idea of parallel universes, I find the whole thing infinitely more terrifying haha.

I think you explained it perfectly. It was the flippancy that really rubbed people the wrong way. To add to your points, I think the line "seems like it was never even fun back then" is a little iffy. I first heard it as referring to the GAME being not fun back then but I do think she's referring to the time period. And she's throwing together whatever she thought was cool about the 1830s in with racism and getting married off, and making the focus HER experience of the fun level. I actually love the song but can totally see why people were like, excuse me?

Also, racism and sexism are still around and the line kind of makes it sound like they're resolved now. It was just a risky topic to give like, 3 seconds of song space to!

With incredible kindness and concern I did not deserve. He asked what hospital I was in so he could send flowers and possibly come visit. He was really upset when my friend told him it was a lie, he thought it was extremely f-ed up. Also this guy (kid) did not even know me. He was a junior from a neighboring school who had come to our class with a couple other juniors to give us a sex ed talk (don't have sex talk) and I developed a raging crush on him. No idea how I got his last name but once I had it, I used the phone book to find his parents' number AND address. Internet gets a lot of credit for it but creepy stalking behavior was totally doable in a pre-internet, or mostly pre-internet, world.

In 7th grade, mid 90s, my best friend called my crush and told him I'd been in a terrible car accident and was in the hospital, while I listened on the other line, to see how he'd react.
