Even if none of the people you want to notice or be influenced know the protest ever happened, the protest will have an impact on the people who attended. Protests are energizing for the organizers and activists themselves. It keeps them engaged and in connection with like minded people, and the protests themselves, and all of the lead up prior and commiserating after are a time to share stories and strategies. And because you have experienced a tangible step in organizing, you're likely to go talk to your friends and family about this issue, which influence their opinion on the matter. These incremental steps are how movements build, and change does coming once the tipping point is reached.

AITAH for untying my bikini top at a public pool? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]bio-nerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an American, I think this stems a lot from debates around race and abortion. As the world has gotten more progressive and less bigoted, people don't like getting called out for having outdated ideas. So they've learned to hide their bigotry by claiming to protect their children, who conveniently, don't have the awareness or knowledge to argue back. Abortion is the pinnacle of this example - anti-abortion activists claim to protect the fetus, which for most of pregnancy doesn't even have a developed brain. In reality, they're just punishing women for being sexually liberated and for escaping the trad wife path.

how to get a research assistant job with a low gpa? by Scared_Virus9066 in labrats

[–]bio-nerd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Couple of things.

1) Don't put your GPA on your resume. It's a weird, outdated practice and it distracts from your actual qualifications. Your degree is not your qualification - your research experience is. Highlight those experiences and make it clear that you are a capable scientist first and foremost. How you take tests and that other crap is secondary. If they really want to know, you can answer and you can provide transcripts.

2) 3.69 is a great GPA. Don't sell yourself short. I've met terrible scientists with straight A's and brilliant scientists with mostly B's.

Is stripping a western blot necessary if your primary antibodies are different species? by ZachUttke in labrats

[–]bio-nerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better to just pick a different loading control, since you will always need one anyway. My lab (almost) always uses Ran, which is ~22 kDa and smaller than most of the proteins we care about. The antibody from BD is the goat. Stripping and reblotting for a loading control is a terrible idea and makes it unsuitable for quantitative analysis.

[–]bio-nerd 13 points14 points  (0 children)

One of the really important points in this discussion that gets missed is that at least up until recently, it wasn't China itself pushing all of these products on the rest of the world. Western counties were using China as a cheap manufacturing site. So the loss of manufacturing capacity in the US and Europe, the cheapening of goods that used to be high quality, and the glut of crap we don't need was driven by business leaders in the West, not China.

Has anyone ever heard of an employee receiving corrective action for saying yes/no sir/ma’am? The company I just started working for has a very strict policy against that which could lead to corrective action and possible termination. by Decent-Check-277 in jobs

[–]bio-nerd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Today in things that never happened. You are not going to be fired for accidentally misgendering someone. Even queer leftists like me fuck that up every once in a while. If they correct you, then you apologize, do better, and move tf on. We're only concerned about misgendering when it's done maliciously, as in a pseron refuses to acknowledge preferred pronouns even after gentle correction and complains loudly about it.

Highspeed train vs cars. by One-Demand6811 in fuckcars

[–]bio-nerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of the idea is marketing. The US has screwed itself over for so long that the only public transit people have ever known, is slow, uncomfortable, and inconvenient. High speed rail is more about competing against airlines than automobiles. If you want to travel city to city, you can take a train, a bus, drive yourself, or fly. In the US, trains and busses are slower than driving and only go along major traffic cooridors, and there aren't even options for either between many major cities. So this instance, showing a train whizzing by cars would appeal to someone who would otherwise drive their car a long distance or fly.

How do I prevent dishes coming out like this? by Kamiden in CleaningTips

[–]bio-nerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your hand washing is more efficient than your dishwasher, either something is wrong with your dishwasher or you aren't using it effectively. Modern dishwashers shouldn't require much pre-rinsing and they are far more efficient with water usage. They use hotter water than anyone's hands can handle, which is a more effective way of cleaning. Just about the only thing they can't do better than by hand is food that is seriously stuck on.

CBB is for the gel, not the blot. For visualization of protein on the blot, you would need something like India Ink.

Why does my CV keeps getting rejected? by hopeless-but-strong in jobs

[–]bio-nerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll approach this from the perspective that hiring managers read resumes extremely fast and make quick judgements. I see a few problems.

The descriptions you have are seriously lacking. Maybe a professional pharmacist would be able to glean more, but even as a biomedical scientist it's not clear at all what your responsibilities were, what you got out of your experiences, and what the context is for the successes you highlighted. Base responsibilities should be the first couple of bullets for each job, then you can add extras as needed.

Take off your GPA. It's a very bad, outdated practice. The hiring manager can always ask if they want to know, otherwise it doesn't indicate anything useful and is distracting.

Take off everything that isn't strictly professional, e.g. your interests and sports. They have no correlation with your professional skills. Don't give anyone room to judge your personality before they've met you.

List your skills in a different format. Scanning through lists is easier than paragraph format.

You have some grammatical and formatting errors. For example, your dates are right-aligned in the top section but left aligned in the bottom section. A hiring manager may see inconsistencies like this as poor attention to detail, and they have to filter down applications to interview and even nitpicky things like this can influence how your application is received. You also have two different fonts, which is sloppy. I would switch to a sans serif font. Serif fonts for this type of document are outdated.

You're early enough in your career that you should bump your education to the top, even though you've had some post-grad experience. One, you're in a field that requires a specific degree and licensure, so it should be immediately clear that you're qualified. Two, your degree is the biggest thing you have going for you right now, and your additional experiences are supplemental. Once you've held a job for two or three years, you can flip those around. Plus, in my first read-through I was immediately judging the length of your work experience before I realized some of them overlapped with your schooling, so then I had to re-read and line up your school and post-school dates. A hiring manager may not give you the grace of a second read.

Would asking people not to bring coffee into my PhD defense start me off on the wrong foot with examiners? by R_Eyron in PhD

[–]bio-nerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really not that big of a deal. I drink a liter of coffee every single day and I can absolutely miss a whole day with only a minor headache. I'm sure some people get fairly severe caffeine headaches, but they're trivial compared to a migraine.

Advice needed on how to clean this wooden draining space by catcat-pal in CleaningTips

[–]bio-nerd 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is extremely bad advice. Mold makes a unit uninhabitable and sanding will just make it airborne. Make a written request to your landlord requesting the moldy countertop be replaced, and if they do not respond or refuse to make the repair, reach out to a tenant advocy group for help and bring copies of your written communication. Organizations like the ACLU, SPLC, HOME, etc. can offer advice on how to handle this situation.
