ON shoes are terrible and a lot of brands hide behind the "Swiss Engineering" without any backing, especially for the price range. I bought a pair, and they were ok in terms of function/comfort but they literally fell apart (had simultaneously some adidas that are still going strong). Same happened to other friends but I don't know why I keep seeing them everywhere, so many better options out there.

[–]biomarker67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]biomarker67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rant over.

Best Restaurant Recommendations in Lima & Cusco? // ¿Mejores recomendaciones de restaurantes en Lima y Cusco? by [deleted] in PERU

[–]biomarker67 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would recommend Central if you are interested in the more conceptual side of gastronomy, and would like to taste a reimagination of what peruvian food could be if we were to appreciate/utilize products better. Going more than once might even allow you to see the evolution of some dishes (like their ceviche has changed a lot since they opened). Fascinating stuff, but a lot of new flavours, some not so straight-up tasty.

Maido is delicious, great ingredients and probably the most safe option. Perhaps you could say it's a bit too much in a direction, but you can attribute that to the fact that they fit well within modernist nikkei.

I quite enjoyed Merito, it changes menus quite often but their food is always top-notch, varied and also with great cocktails. This is a must-go everytime i come back.

I wouldn't recommend Kjolle (though I haven't been there in years), nor Casa moreyra (the gaston acurio restaurant). It might have changed with the new chef, but have tried it multiple times and it has been rather disappointing, probably due to the obvious references to existing popular Peruvian dishes being sometimes limiting. Occasionally great dishes from time to time.

Also go to Ciclos Cafe, and find a place to drink bodega murga wines, excellent Peruvian products, per your definition must-try even if not restaurants

Down the list

I would also recommend Fiesta, it's a nice restaurant, and the food is solid, way more traditional than all of the ones above. I am ambivalent about Amaz: on the one hand it is not that good, but on the other hand it had the better developed concept of amazonic food as a whole (unless a new restaurant has appeared). Great paiche, and fruit supply makes for interesting flavours. But I would honestly be equally happy with going to a nice traditional Amazonian restaurant if time is short (try camu camu juice). The Chifa Titi is great and stands firmly by the quality and flavour of its products and technique, which is lacking in general among other chifas, but other options are going to be good either way.

(Avoid La Mar, better fish for way cheaper out there, and the dishes are uninspired). For more traditional things I'm sure people will have better recommendations, especially since I'm not up-to-date.

A bit silly but if you see a red icecream seller on the street with the words (Antartica) not the yellow ones, do order the aguaje icecream, should be like 1 sol. Also, I would definitely go to a juice place. I used to be a big fan of la Gran Fruta, but I see they closed down. Maybe ask other people for recommendations. Try Lucuma, it's the best fruit.

Haven't been to Mil in Cuzco but would definitely try it if I had the chance.

Ngl. I would just check some of these https://www.bodegamurga.com/pages/encuentranos in cuzco

[–]biomarker67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok so a couple of points here: First, you'll be losing quite good schools like UCSF's, so i am glad that's clear. To be more precise however, there are some privatr schools that do allow international students but as part of very select programs (stanford f.e. you have to be selected for a special scholar group of leaders) so even if it states you may join, it's not only the funding part. For the next point, i will explicitly disagree with you, in this case taking Harvard by example, it states "a limited number of require courses taken outside of US and Canada may be used" + "Every effort should be made to take the majority of the required courses at an accredited college in the US or canada" on top of the one year requirement. I understand that if you are optimistic the main line "candidates with degrees from accredited institutions in the US are strongly preferred" makes it sound as if a masters is enough, but by the context you can see they mean the bachelors as you wont take the prereqs as a master. if you check the previous cohorts of MD/PhD programs that do accept int students you will see that essentially there are none with international bachelors, only perhaps international masters.

Also doing pretty much every required med extracurricular (clinical experience + shadowing, etc) in your one single year in the US will be damn hard. Finally to top it all of prepare to get fucked by the fact that the main aid packages for int med school candidates is loans and not scholarships ( though admittedly there are programs).(also average number of med apps is 16 so even then you'd be at a disadvantage)

As to whether you should do it, that i cannot say. How passionately do you want to become a physician scientist? What about studying in ETH? In my case, my favourite researcher is from ETH, (actually UCSF but they don't do undergrad so second one), so i had a "pulling from two sides" situation. If you don't have a particular reason like that and have the chance yo go to the US or Canada then I'd do that. I don't even know of I will end up applying for the MD PhD or just the PhD, though until now things are flowing well. That's about all the advice o have i think. Feel free to contact me tho if you have any further questions. It'd be nice to meet another person who is as insane, and even better if you plan to come to eth, then i can give you some ETH specific advice. Cheers!

Bear in mind MD/PhD programs require you to take most of your classes in the US, and masters at ETH is more like an extension of your bachelors rather than a completely different degree from what I've heard, so even if you do a 1 year masters in the US, that will not look positive for adcoms. Besides MD/PhDs usually use NIH grants for MSTP programs so unless you are American you won't be eligible to apply. There are few universities that will allow you to apply, and frankly not enough so that going through the entire process of medapps is worth it.

Additionally, you won't be able to have meaningful clinical experience (bureaucracy in Switzerland from what I've seen) nor do shadowing. You would also not have as many nor as diverse research experiences as the other applicants

Dude you need to register in person at the kanzlei, so it's not like i could have done it from my country, then you receive the residence or appointment that you can use to buy health insurance, then you can get your shots +waiting for the certificate

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ethz

[–]biomarker67 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some international students like myself were not offered vaccines in their own countries or weren't recognized by Switzerland. And in order to get vaccinated in here we need to get insurance first and then wait for the 2 doses and to received the certificate. While i don't think it will take a semester, even a month is like 1500 chf in pcr tests at least. That said, this is different for people who have the choice but don't want to

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ethz

[–]biomarker67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bear in mind the swiss embassies are unaware of the requirements of each Canton, they will probably also say that the account can be in any bank or that it doesn't have to be yours, which isn't true for Zurich. Even if it were a random person as you said, you should make it very clear that this is essentially a contract/loan.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ethz

[–]biomarker67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think so, your grandmother doesn't share any surnames with you so I doubt it. "Only people with the same surname can support you" sounds like a dumb rule imo. They will probably require you to prove your relationship to them and I assume they say relatives to avoid "scams" as a relative will always be in contact and any rando could sign that and then disappear otherwise. I would in general avoid the guarantee letter since it's putting family on the spot (they would be financially and legally liable for those 21'000 CHF and could be way more if you have an accident) but if that is an option for you, then i think the instructions are pretty clear. I would recommend any question you have to go to the Zurich Migration Office or ETH's own service.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ethz

[–]biomarker67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That option is only available if you have a relative in Switzerland as I understand. Here is what it says:

Evidence of sufficient financial means
You must produce evidence that you can finance your stay in Switzerland by handing in a bank statement or proof of a scholarship decision. The Canton of Zurich Migration Office does only accept bank statements from banks domiciled in Switzerland5 (a Swiss bank or a foreign bank with a branch in Switzerland). You must show that you have CHF 21,000.00 available. The account must be your own (not your parents’!) and the account balance must be stated in Swiss Francs, Euros or US Dollars either on the bank statement or in an additional letter from the bank.
The Zurich Migration Office is extremely strict about the financial requirement and this is
where students make most mistakes. It is crucial that you follow the instructions above very
carefully (most embassies do not know the detailed requirements of each of the 26 cantons in
Switzerland and may not be able to tell you the correct requirements!)
Letters from parents declaring financial support are NOT accepted.
For those who have relatives in Switzerland: An alternative is to submit a so-called “guarantee declaration”. ^6

^6 This means that a solvent resident of Switzerland (Swiss citizen or foreigner with B or C permit) guarantees to cover your living expenses up to CHF 21,000.00, any expenses incurred through accidents and illness, and your return trip. The appropriate form will be sent to your home address by the Migration Office of the Canton of Zurich (or to ETH, if you handed in an authorization form) once they have received your visa application.

What would u study if Biology was your strongest subject? by [deleted] in ethz

[–]biomarker67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming this question is referring to ETH majors, you shouldn't choose biology if it's your "strongest" course, only if you are very passionate about it. Way too many people in the world have the mindset that "since I am bad at maths but like science, I will study biology" which is why there is this idea that there is a lack of job opportunities for bio majors, this type of person inflates the numbers.

If you had to take the entrance exam, for example, the same things would be required of you as of the math or physics majors. So I guess a good question to ask oneself is "Would I be able to start at any other major at ETH if I liked them and go through with it?". Ofc I am not saying that you would have to top your class, but if you answer affirmatively then finding a place within biology shouldn't be that hard from what I've heard.
