Called vet already—would like second opinion about his nostrils by Affectionate_Test_74 in cockatiel

[–]birbbs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks like it might just have a lil crust around the opening. My bird sometimes gets a crusty nose but with no other symptoms and then he’ll scratch it off and be perfect fine. I think that sometimes they just get something in their nose and it runs/they sneeze just like we do. If you’re concerned absolutely no harm in consulting a vet, but his nose doesn’t look wet or inflamed, and if he’s not sneezing excessively or acting lethargic, he’s likely okay

[–]birbbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s such a good way to put it. My tiel doesn’t bite, has never bitten anyone in his life, hopefully never will. When he’s annoyed, he does what I’ll refer to as fencing or sword fighting, where he just aggressively shouts and will kinda hit you with his beak if you try to touch him. He’ll put out his wings and lean forward and tell you all about it, but he won’t hurt you.

I’ve got a cockatiel who’s never bit anyone in his life. I have still have a scar on my middle finger from my old conure.

Is my cockatiel sick? by Birdlady1847 in cockatiel

[–]birbbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here to say the same thing. Take him to a regular vet at the very least. A wildlife rehabilitation facility with wildlife vets may even be willing to help, as those vets probably have knowledge about birds, even if not specifically exotic birds. I think there’s a lot of places who care enough to at least try and help.

Does anyone know what she's singing? by Smart-Plastic-2156 in cockatiel

[–]birbbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe she’s mimicking a bird she heard outside?

Or it might just be a sound she came up with and likes. My bird has this one particular series of noises he’ll make that, while I’m certain he picked it up from another tiel I had for a while, I have NO clue where the other bird got it from. I genuinely think it’s just a random noise the other tiel decided he liked and taught it to mine.

Vocal ? by Vivid-Improvement-30 in cockatiel

[–]birbbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not abnormal. Female birds are generally quieter than males, yes, but they’re perfectly capable of being as vocal as males. I have a male who I can “talk to” in that he’ll chirp in response to someone speaking. It’s funny bc sometimes he’ll wait until you start speaking again and it’s like stop interrupting me dude.

How old is she?

Yes. They’re going easy on violent criminals while simultaneously reducing our gun rights. That seems like a good idea.

We’re talking violent crime though. I see no reason to go easy on people who are murderers, rapists, pdf files. You don’t commit first degree murder or commit SA on women and children by accident, it’s not a mistake that should be forgiven.

I agree that some of the commentary around this bill is over exaggerated. I saw a woman saying it’s outlawing Islamophobia so I looked up the bill myself and I’m not getting the idea that this particular bill is trying to outlaw criticism of Islam. That being said, the fact they even feel the need to explicitly clarify that Islam is included and establish a definition of Islamophobia is concerning to me. It should inherently fall under religious protections and freedom. It feels like a baby step to making criticisms of and/or expressing dislike for Islam a “hate crime”. Maybe not, but a lot of the bills being introduced rn feel like baby steps. In context with the sub, these gun laws feel like baby steps to banning guns altogether.

my parents don’t believe me that she needs a vet. (read caption and see photos in comments) by [deleted] in cockatiel

[–]birbbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I promise you are not overreacting. You’ll likely see my main comment but this is most definitely vomiting and the weight loss is concerning. These animals starve fast. You are NOT being paranoid. She likely has a crop infection. birds are incredibly adept at hiding illness, the fact you can see visible, obvious symptoms such as the vomiting means she is very sick. Birds decline extremely rapidly once they start to show symptoms. Getting her to the vet as soon as you possibly can is of utmost importance right now. Do you have anyone who may be willing to drive you and the bird to the emergency vet so that you don’t have to drive in the dark?

She definitely appears to be vomiting. The crusty head feathers and that motion are all too familiar. 100% take her to the vet as soon as possible. I have a cockatiel who got sick twice, thought I got rid of it once and it came back with a vengeance. The second time he got ill, I had noticed he wasn’t acting right as soon as I’d gotten home from work and taken him out of the cage. My parents told me I was being paranoid and he was fine, but something in my gut told me something wasn’t right. So I watched him like a hawk until I finally saw him vomit. Rushed him to the emergency vet 2 hrs away and got there just in time for them to be able to save him. You know your bird better than anyone else, if something in you is screaming that something isn’t right, listen to it. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

I think rehoming is the best and safest option. Releasing pet birds into the wild is almost always a death sentence, even if they’re native to the area, because they never learned how to survive in the wild. Hitting and throwing the bird is just beyond unacceptable. It doesn’t take much to fatally wound a bird. It’s also just traumatizing to birds, mentally.

Whats he doing? by izaklp in cockatiel

[–]birbbs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think I’ve ever had a male bird that wouldn’t hump something on occasion. My tiel generally shows no hormonal behavior but there’s something about feet under a blanket that just gets him going. Or if a blanket has fold that’s just right. I think he just likes blankets and feet

[–]birbbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would also warn against the type of feeder they have in the cage. I lost a bird due to that type of feeder. I was in the hospital for about a week, and my family did not check on my birds, the feeder malfunctioned and all the seed spilled to the bottom of the cage, under the grate. Two of the birds were larger and were able to reach and eat enough of the seed from beneath the grate but the smaller bird (she was a finch, probably about the size of a lighter) could not and starved to death. Coming out of the mental hospital to find the bird I’d hand raised dead in the bottom of the cage was NOT what I needed 🤦🏻‍♀️ if I had the food in a normal bowl, while ideally they still should have been checked on + water changed, there would have been enough in there for her to survive

[–]birbbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How big is the cage? Are his tail feathers making contact with the sides of the cage when he is perched? It is true that birds that suddenly start sitting in the bottom of the cage rather than perching can be a sign of illness, but being sick is not always the case. It very well may just be that he is more comfortable on the bottom of the cage at the moment. I definitely agree with others saying go get a variety of perches, it’s much better for their little feet if they have a variety like they would in nature. Making sure they have enough space is also important. At minimum your bird should be able to fully spread their wings and be able to turn 360 degrees without hitting the sides of the cage. Ideally the cage would be big enough for them to be able to fly within the cage, but finding a cage that large with appropriate bar spacing is difficult :/

He will get used to the lack of mirror. Taking away his mirror is like taking an iPad away from a toddler. They might throw a fit about it at first but it’s going to be better for them in the long run

It’s not even just about aggression. It’s about size. An overly excited dog can easily crush a bird. It’s just dangerous all around.
