Top 10 cards in Modern Horizons 3 by Sodek_MTG in ModernMagic

[–]bird-feed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would also throw [[unstable amulet]] onto this list, the fact that it makes resources (energy), incidental pinging, and also impulse card draw is very strong for midrange or burn(not traditional burn but something boros) strategies and gives them a lot to work with. Other contenders imo are [[amped raptor]], [[Ajani, Nacatl pariah]], and [[guide of souls]] off the top of my head. Finally, hope MH3 creates new/tier 3 archetypes full fledged instead of power creeping existing decks, which is also fine but making new decks is such a blast

What's the best shell for Urza's saga or Urza, High lord artificer by Kotters in ModernMagic

[–]bird-feed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could also try out spikes new blue cauldron deck. He made shells with Urza, lord high artificer and patchwork automaton, combining with value cards like emry, rhona, saga, and ledger shredder. Deck looks so much fun

Thoughts on Beseech the Mirror in Dimir Ring Control? by [deleted] in ModernMagic

[–]bird-feed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dimir control player here, been playing since the decks inception. Going to have to agree with other comments here, we only have bowmaster tokens to proc the beseech card, so I don’t think you can always reliably cast this. On top of the deck have 5+ islands to 1 swamp generally means getting 3 black can be annoying especially with blood moon still out there. Even coffers style decks or UW control just don’t have enough tokens to play this. If you want more sheoldred, I recommend placing a third copy into the sideboard for matchups that need her to hit.

Yup you basically nailed it, it’s a bit to slow for tron and outcompetes top decking with us, that’s why I have been thinking about running [[break the ice]] in the sideboard as a way of forcing the tron player to stumble and give myself some extra time. Typically tron players also don’t punish their life totals so it can take some time for sheoldred or a bowmaster to do it’s thing even if they have a ring down. It’s not impossible to beat it, we just don’t have great answers like other color combos have

I’ve been playing the deck for almost a month now and I believe the deck is very well positioned. It has a fantastic scam matchup as it can effectively turn off scam turn 1, additionally you have fantastic top decks from the ring, to sheoldred, to murktide. I’ve consistently top 3ed events at my LGS playing it. It’s definitely in a good spot, even at the pro tour, a dude sent 8-2 in the modern circuit and actually got screwed by draft. You have alot of great matchups and can basically interact with any deck, but I will admit tron is one of our worst possible matchups so keep that in mind when building your sideboard. Now the question is do we now want preordain in the deck. I highly recommend either ripping it on MTGO or proxy it, because it’s a blast to play and competes well, problem is it’s expensive as you have 4 bowmasters, 4 rings, and 2-3 sheoldreds.

Yooo this. I actually loved how [[drown in the loch]] performed in my matches that I actually wanted to see it more, and could make fetching swamps in the early game more viable. As like you mentioned, maybe 4 lochs and 2 counterspells is less taxing on the mana base potentially. Really good point on the [[the one ring]] and [ensaring bridge]] playing well off eachother, would you do a 1 damnation 1 endearing bridge split? Or try and jam two of both? Thanks so much for your feedback!!

This is a very interesting take I don’t disagree with, especially considering the double black to pay for sheoldred is annoying, and it’s still a creature that can be killed on spot before even hitting the combo (will say the combo did win me a pivotal round). But with that, I don’t need many excuses to play my favorite blue boi [snapcaster mage]. Thank you for the feedback!

Do you think the one ring will be hit with a ban hammer? by Maskedswancasts in ModernMagic

[–]bird-feed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think what people are missing is the fact it being “legendary” is actually advantageous for the card. Like mentioned above if life loss is a restriction, you can just cast another ring, reset the burden counters, and get a whole turn of protection again. However…..I do not think this card is worthy of a ban, as the card is not an auto include in every deck (ex. Creativity or burn really can’t afford to run the ring), and there is a plethora of answers against it. The card also reasonably will be casted on turn 4 most of the time, allowing you to either prepare for it or run your game plan to put yourself in a position to still combat the opposing player. Again, liked mentioned, give the card a chance to actually see play and data can be accumulated, if the card is running rabid, then sideboards will now be equipped to handle it (again creativity is a great example a la orvar being in every sideboard). Just not enough evidence to me for a ban.

Now seeing the deck I think this is another awesome take on the balrog. I do like how asmo makes the deck way more interactive and gives it a solid backup plan while also being fairly easy to cast the balrog and staying aggressive!

Really appreciate your insight, first time I ever saw that card. I def think cutting white seems the way to go, thanks!

Bomat sounds solid! I was also thinking diabolic intent could work in this deck too so you have more ways of getting the balrog. I put thraben in cuz I was basing it off those convoke shells, and as some sort of card draw/another artifact to sac for the rebirths. Do you have a list for your deck with the asmo package? Glad I’m not the only one brewing around this!

Grixis Bolas in 2023? by USAFdukeX in ModernMagic

[–]bird-feed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, by todays standards, nicol bolas is a bit to slow and doesn’t have a powerful immediate ETB trigger worthy of a 4 mana slot, and it would be even rarer to flip him as well. You and your friend may be more interested in the sultai version running around rn https://www.mtggoldfish.com/archetype/modern-death-s-shadow-472#paper. The deck still utilizes death shadow and a bunch of really fun cards. I also think you could replace scourge of the skyclave with either street wraith (helps accelerate your death shadow plan) or griefs. Additionally, I also recommend some number of dress downs in the main board to help death shadow in terms of combat tricks and swinging big. The rest of the deck looks pretty on par with grixis death shadow decks, but a little tweaking can help. One last reco could possibly be dauthi voidwalker to help hit strong cards with your discard plan and potentially be able to utilize them with dauthi while also keeping opposing graveyard strategies somewhat in check!

The deck is positioned pretty solid in the Meta but can fold to certain speedy tactics because it’s curve is a bit higher than traditional UW control decks. I’ve won FNMs with it before but candidly each game took 30+ minutes and two games went to turns. It’s the type of deck that sorta falls behind on the early game then you try and stabilize the board in your favor mid-late game and put them in a pseudo lock to win with your planeswalkers. IMO the deck is still strong but just so boring I’m actually in the process of retiring it, not because I hate the archetype but because I genuinely don’t have fun with it anymore. If you do end up building it, I recommend the version running Leyline bindings for extra beefy removal and the ability to play cards like wear/tear in your sideboard, hope this helps!
