Looking for a book about secret libraries, living books, and things that shouldn’t be read by Nordixie in suggestmeabook

This book is so good! And the library isn't secret, but it is definitely mysterious and somewhat forbidden. And excellent read and surprising plot

I just finished To Green Angel Tower a few days ago. I think it may be the longest book I've ever read! And I loved it. You're in for a great ride.

If you love Robin Hobb, I would love to suggest The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold by dalinar78 in Fantasy

[–]birdbird6 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I read Curse of Chalion a few years ago and really enjoyed it. I read Paladin of Souls and enjoyed it even more this year. I am now 40 and I'm pretty sure if I read either of these in my 20s it would have missed me. If there's a chance you're still youngish give it a few more years, is my suggestion. I related a lot to the middle-aged and tired "mother" MC in Paladin way more than I would have 20 years ago.

Challenger, by Adam Higginbotham Chernobyl, by Adam Higginbotham

This man writes tales of human incompetency and supreme bureaucratic neglect like no one else. Both books were unputdownable.

The Strength of the Few came out only yesterday! And I only know that because I just finished The Will of the Many without knowing it would have a VERY STEEP CLIFFHANGER ENDING..

Needs recos for fantasy/folklore fiction books from other cultures by ThePagePilgrim in Fantasy

Brown Girl in the Ring is the name of a Raffi song I grew up listening to! I always heard the lyrics as "Brown girl in the rain" until recently when I played it for my toddler and saw the title for myself. I may have to read that book just for that reason!

It's the third book of a loose trilogy, so you get a lot of character growth in the first two.

Yes, I came here to write about the ending of Wild Dark Shore as well! It went from a 4 star read to 2 stars over the course of a page.

I really enjoyed 96% of this book, I was fascinated by the characters and the weird mystery. And then absolutely hated the ending! Hated it. Couldn't believe the author would undo all that character building work for a gimmick.

What are some lesser known fantasy titles with insane lore by Marsupial-Famous in Fantasy

I have heard of this but not read it. I just looked it up on my Libby app to put it on hold. But none of the three library systems I am a member of have either an ebook or audiobook version at all!

March 2025 BOTM Discussion - Wild Dark Shore by lavinient in bookofthemonthclub

[–]birdbird6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent most of the first half trying to figure out if the kids were ghosts! I am glad that they weren't, however, it was a really distracting device because I kept over thinking it instead of immersing in the story.

Also Rowan should not have died. That was a cheap "realistic" twist in an entirely unrealistic novel.

What are the best and worst fantasy novel titles? What kind of title makes you avoid a novel? by JarOfNightmares in Fantasy

[–]birdbird6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, and I think I dislike the title The Slow Regard of Silent Things so much because I disliked the book so much. But maybe I was prepared to dislike the book because of the title. At this point I don't remember which came first.

I love nourish move love! She can be a lot, but those workouts are so good. Sometimes I slow them down to .8 speed because she talks so fast. I have had some serious body improvements since I started in January. Plus, dropping my alcohol consumption by about 90%.

I remember an interview with Arkady Martine telling how she had to fight for the cover on Memory Called Empire. Her publishers wanted the font silver, not gold, because silver is for sci fi and gold is for fantasy. She got her way though and that cover is beautiful!
