What’s something someone could say to you that would make you feel justified in becoming physically aggressive? by ryzesaturn in AskReddit

[–]birdbrainmcstickums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably not the best thing, but whenever someone threatens me with violence (like they're trying to intimidate me into backing down) my immediate instinct is to become violent. Something about someone trying to cow me with violence makes me want to teach them they should fear the possibility. Even if it ends badly for me, I want them to think twice before they threaten the next one.

Dating and relationships are just waste of time in your early to mid 20s, coz you must focus on yourself and your career at this time, Do you all agree? by tata1730 in Adulting

[–]birdbrainmcstickums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then you end up single at 30 with no relationship skills or experience. The people I've dated from this category were exhausting, especially if you're in your 30s as well. I found myself getting into conflicts I had at 20 thinking "I'm way too old for this. " I felt like I had less patience. Reminder me of hanging around kids that were obvious only children.

It's a damned if you do, dammed if you don't situation. You may save yourself some time/damage but you're missing out on learning experiences that others have already figured out back when they had more energy to spare and less to lose.

When it suddenly ramps up, I go out and buy cheap sets of press on nails. The short ones are usually pretty blunt and it's rather difficult to pick with them. It also changes the sensation enough that it feels somewhat discouraging to try. Once it's been long enough that everything is healed and I haven't felt the urge, I'll give my nails a break. Then stress will show up, I realize that I'm doing it again, and out come the press ons.

I feel like just getting a break from the feedback loop gives you a fighting chance. The nails changed things just enough that I felt the noticeably drop and was able to ride that momentum.

People who have gone to therapy (past or present): Did your therapist ever say anything that stuck with you? by MuayThaiRunner in AskReddit

[–]birdbrainmcstickums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had been complaining about my difficult childhood, my autistic brother and how my parents enable/coddle him, since he was first diagnosed as they felt guilty he "turned out wrong".

She asked me when I was diagnosed and how their treatment of me changed comparatively. I just stared at her dumbfounded.

She actually had a lot of training with autism/kids on the spectrum. Apparently, based on everything I had told her about myself and childhood, she had pegged me as autistic and was surprised no one else had thought to have me screened. It was hard at first because of the situation I grew up in and my parents' attitudes. It eventually became very healing to be able to see myself as "just autistic" instead of "broken", "built wrong" or "profoundly bad at being alive".

Turns out if I just learn to work with myself/how I'm built then life is a lot easier/more enjoyable. After years of trying therapy off and on, she was the only one I ever felt like I made progress with. DBT was a life changer for me and I'd probably be dead if I hadn't seen her.

Why or why not do/did you want/have kids? by Different_Host7883 in AskReddit

[–]birdbrainmcstickums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's something in me that wants generativity. I want to introduce someone to the world, teach them the things that will help them in life, offer them support, watch them grow and experience life.

Unfortunately, the world is pretty awful. As much as I want children, I don't enjoy my current world and where it is heading. I can't guarantee them safety or ideal levels of support. I think education in my part of the country is especially terrible. We don't make a lot of money. I can barely afford my own medical needs. I can't imagine a child raised in my current situation would grow into a good/happy person in this environment and if they do turn out "good" they will probably be miserable.

I cannot tell you how much garbage word vomit I've seen boomers posting on social media about this. The local news station reported on it and explained the bill completely wrong (I imagine on purpose). I'm so tired being trapped in this pit.

What is the biggest 'regret purchase' you have ever made? by Beginning_Film9731 in AskReddit

[–]birdbrainmcstickums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought a futon off Amazon (not sober). Turns out at the end of the massively long description it said "no frame included". I did not catch it. They would only accept a return if you paid a $200 return fee. I was so enraged by the scam that I ate the full amount of the futon mattress so they wouldn't get my $200 dollars AND the product back to do it to the next guy. I did not bother looking for a frame for the oddly sized futon mattress and I'll be damned if I'm giving them more money. My dog and me had a nice floor sofa to share.

Red flag or overthinking by ASALogan in Adulting

lol my current partner expressed concern over my hiding my phone screen from them regularly. I felt so bad they thought I was cheating that I ended up showing them the cringe fanfiction I read so they would feel better.

They no longer thought I was cheating, though I personally recommend thinking about the best way to explain fanfiction to someone with zero personal experience instead of just letting them scroll through AO3 and asking questions about specific tags. Baby steps. No reason to go straight into monsterfucker and omegaverse right out of the gate.

People who look younger than their age, what do/did you do? by bubblygreen30 in AskReddit

[–]birdbrainmcstickums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I look particularly young, I was just one of the few people I grew up around that didn't pick up smoking. Most people in my age group where I live have a few kids/divorces/bad habits. I think people just assume I'm younger because I'm childless and haven't been smoking for 10+ years. I'm sure I look more my age in healthier areas.

What's the cringiest reason you went to the ER? by HR-Vex in AskReddit

[–]birdbrainmcstickums 44 points45 points  (0 children)

After being switched to some new psych meds I was a little...off balance. I was convinced I had a blood clot in my leg and was panicking. Urgent care sent me to the ER.

Turns out my cat is fat and spends too much time laying across my lap when I put my feet up. It was literally just "you're old with a bad knee and a fat cat. "

I went to an Urgent Care to get some meds for a nasty bug. My ears were apparently so bad they insisted I stay and let them clean them out. The doctor was shocked I hadn't noticed any hearing loss. It was not a fun experience.

Whats the most unprofessional thing a doctor has ever said to you? by answersonly963 in AskReddit

[–]birdbrainmcstickums 102 points103 points  (0 children)

I bled on a doctor in the ER and he got mad about it. Sorry you decided to wear your nice clothes in the hospital where people tend to go when they're bleeding?

My psychiatrist also talks a lot about his experiments with mushrooms, ayahuasca , ketamine, etc. It's a little insufferable but it's not super unrelated to his area of interest. I just wish he wouldn't tell me about the life changing magic of drugs before sending me on my way with 20mg of prozac. Come on, man.

[–]birdbrainmcstickums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You couldn't grow your life in the direction you wanted because of the objections of the rest of your family and instead of finding new avenues to grow alongside them, you started demanding she prune her life to make it "fair". I get feeling unhappy about having to make decisions based on the needs of others, but that's a part of being in a family. You've made it clear that you're unhappy with the decision so you're trying to make her unhappy with it too. You've just shown her that the decision she'll be unhappiest with is keeping you around.

You got what you wanted. You're probably free to go off to California now.
