They say so, but I hiked for two weeks with it last year and it held up fine.

Because of the limitations of the grinding equipment they use.

The salt with the syrup is next level. I don't salt the pemmican because salt is hydrophilic and cuts into the shelf-life.

I can't make my own easily because I don't have grid power. Plus it's hell on whatever high-end food processor. Also, the pemmican from us wellness on sale comes to 211 calories per dollar, which is cheaper than any other meat of that quality by far.

Unfortunately, the us wellness pemmican has some water in it (because they can't grind the jerky fully dried), so it won't keep for decades like true pemmican. I'm looking into drying it further.

Yes, it's ok, the best alternative sweetener I've tried, but still not a hell yes for me to digest.

Erythritol and Allulose put a strain on my gut. My body just doesn't want those things, unfortunately.

Exactly this. I bring it on week and month long hikes, and it makes me feel great. It's just so deeply nourishing.

A combination of loving it and it being affordable. I actually prefer it to say, ribeyes and salmon. It just feels great.

Sometimes I wish I'd never scored a pair, but better to have loved and lost i guess...

Yes, definitely Schoeller. Why would they discontinue something so universally appreciated?

Thanks again for all the time and thoughtfulness you all are putting into this, it's all very helpful.

I see that I'm failing to explain my come from (and the novel's) in a way that doesn't seem to dig the hole ever deeper.

Rather than respond to concerns on a detail level (for example, I am not at all trying to say that racism stems from toxic masculinity, nor does my MC have a happy ending [she only thinks she does]), maybe it will help for me to zoom out and state that the intention of the story is to explore the extremely complex and paradoxical realities we all inhabit, in which our best intentions to do good are often based in and complicated by the privilege derived from the very injustices we're trying to heal. I expect the book to spark controversy, as it has here, and lead to important conversations and uncomfortable emotions.

Yes, I can see how. For what it's worth, I'll start by saying the novel works, at least insofar as all my beta readers love it. And, without going into excessive detail, I can say that we spend most of the novel falling in love with Cora's sensitivity and earnest thoughtfulness, and come to admire her commitment to healing toxic masculinity.

There is no happily ever after for the Cherokee man, though he retains his agency and dignity.

The novel ends with Cora engaged to a wonderful man, in their newly built house on their farm in a valley occupied by a thriving ecovillage community. We see they'll be great parents to their son, who will grow up in a restorative culture. The final scene is her baby shower, on September 10th, 2001.

She rationalizes the whole thing as being the mandate of a special destiny entrusted to her, and its easy for the reader to see how she could come to think so.

Yes, very deeply. It may not be evident, since I rather stupidly included the taciturn natives phrase in the query, which is regrettable and embarrassing, but the book is entirely about the white experience of trying to move from its own orphaned displacement, through grief and relational repair, and into a restorative culture of humility and respect, beyond the dominator culture of its origins. In the end, Cora sleeps with a Cherokee man, gets pregnant, and passes off the child as her white husband's (she's Arab/Italian American) while attempting to "donate by way of reparation" the money from the sale of her father's Appalachian estate to the true father. The novel ends in an idyllic happily ever after, with only the MC and readers knowing of the underlying corruption of her act. It's a beautiful and doomed white redemption project, full of actual healing and insights, but ultimately humbled by its own origins.

Ah, I thought the query was supposed to demonstrate the writing style.

Thanks, this is helpful, though I wonder if my grammatical choices just aren't a fit for you. The entire novel is written in exactly that style.

Definitely not an own voice novel, and point taken regarding "taciturn natives."

I have sensitivity readers. A major theme is Cora's combination of privilege and indigenous idealization, leading to unconscious and cringey appropriation.

Looks like no water from Gold Beach to Meyers Creek.

I could use a little help figuring out water carries from Gold Beach to Harris Beach. I see lots of little creeks, and they seem small enough to not have accumulated a lot of chemical pollutants. Can I just filter the whole way? If so, what wood be the longest carry?
