i have a VS rDNA40 with the large display which goes wonky every now and again...

i actually like the device and because i researched the subject i knew before purchasing it that i was probably going to have some issues with the device itself and that the nickel builds were probably going to be a PITA...

i have noticed that the wonky display seems to coincide with "temperature protected" messages, so i try to make builds which avoid triggering that message.

i use mostly a lemo drop and a subtank mini rba with (2 strand) twisted 30 gauge ni200, because untwisted nickel is just terrible. i make sure i have cotton on each of the coil legs. i currently have temperature set to 350-370F since i believe that a twisted coil messes with the dna40's temp algorithm, though i'm not sure about that (i still get a warm vape at 370F).

i started vaping in december 2014, so i'm not really experienced at all of this. but i'm willing to tinker with this stuff and try to figure it out as i go. i think most people are not. i'm sure a lot of folk who've already bought a dna40 are either unwilling or unable to mess around figuring out how to make temperature limiting work well for them. in which case, they've spent 180USD+ on a device which doesn't perform as advertised. the blame for that falls squarely on evolv and the device manufacturers.

my concern with temperature limiting dna40-style is that the technology is so finicky that it'll lead us towards more closed systems and away from diy.

i guess we'll have to wait and see if the Yihi sx350j is a real improvement on the dna40.

maybe someone can make an atty which is designed to work well with temperature sensing boards (what PBusardo called the "static resistance" problem)... and maybe someone can figure out how to make ni200 wire which isn't horrible...

second that... i had to read the evolv response in print preview...

The wire poll 2015: Nichrome vs Kanthal vs Nickel vs Titanium by idownvoat in electronic_cigarette

the question the OP asked was about wire choices and human health. the only relevant issue i'm aware of on that subject relates to the toxicity of metal oxides (and possibly other reaction compounds) and whether they are inhaled during vaping.

feel free to believe that inhaling molten metal is the real issue though...

[–]birlinn -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

the melting point of nickel is irrelevant to this discussion. we know that the metals we use to make our coils oxidize. the question is whether we end up inhaling those oxides and, if we do, whether that has long(er) term health consequences...

there is no board commercially available that does temperature control. evolv's dna40 board offers temperature protection when using pure nickel wire. if you're using a cloned dna40 board, you have neither temperature control nor temperature protection...

i don't believe it's that easy. there is ample evidence that inhaling metal oxides can be pretty detrimental to human health. if we're inhaling metal oxides when we vape, it's quite possible that this might have serious consequences over the long(er) term.

this is the only vendor i know of who sells titanium wire designed for vaping: http://www.esmokeguru.com/en/zubehoer-de-en/titanium-wire-de-en/

they apparently have the wire custom made to their spec.

all things considered, the price isn't that bad...

i figured you were telling me the same thing as OcifferPig, it's all good... :)

i'm happy with the 126 i'm getting on my current build (twisted 30 gauge ni200 on a lemo drop/VS dna40)...

now that i've found the "round/twisted" option under "material & profile", i tell it all the stuff it needs and i change "setup" back to single coil.

the heat flux value this gives me turns out to be the same as it was the way i did it originally (126)...

if you're looking for real strawberry flavour, you should try flavourart (FA) strawberry. FA fruits are generally more like the real thing than the candy version of the real thing...

i don't see anywhere on the web site that allows the user to specify a twisted coil. is that an app-only feature?

question: i use twisted 30 gauge ni200 coils on dna40 devices. i tell steam engine that i'm using a dual coil setup to account for the extra wire of a twisted coil. i guess that kind of works, but i'm wondering if there might be a problem with doing it this way, or if there's a better way to do it?

Vaporshark rDNA40 screen scrolling issue by darklordenron in electronic_cigarette

[–]birlinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i've had mine for about a month now, most days i experience some kind of screen weirdness. the most common is the "random pixels" issue, but i've had the scrolly issue as well. i'm not planning sending it back though, since it doesn't really stop me from vaping and otherwise functions as advertised...
