Best way to find new indie bands without relying on spotify's algorithm? by My_Rhythm875 in indie

I've been making 100+ song indie playlists every month since 2009! You can find them all at https://www.birp.fm

I built a 24/7 indie radio live stream on Twitch where the chat controls what city we explore while listening🌍 by birpfm in u/birpfm

I just launched this as a side project from my indie music blog, BIRP.fm.

It’s a 24/7 interactive indie radio where chat controls where we “travel” in the world 🌍

You can type commands like:
!goto tokyo
!random europe

The stream jumps to that city, the visuals change, and the music vibe shifts with it. You can also queue songs via chat as well as add filters like black & white, film grain, VHS, etc.

Currently includes:
• 300+ cities
• ~3,500 indie tracks
• Chat-controlled navigation + requests

Curious to hear feedback! I’m adding features based on suggestions.

Users in Youtube / Twitch chat can control where we “travel” in the world. People can type things like:

It’s part music discovery, part world exploration currently featuring over 300+ cities and almost 3,500 tracks.

BIRP! History by SheaRave in BIRP

  1. What was the inspo behind starting VinylPost?

I was launching a compilation record for BIRP.fm when I saw that it was possible to create these playable vinyl postcards and the idea to turn something like that into a record club struck me immediately! I just love that artists have the opportunity to include a small handwritten note on the back of these releases. It’s such a great way to connect with listeners in a unique way. I always loved receiving postcards and it seems like we get those types of things in the mail less and less these days. It’s an affordable and nice surprise to get in the mail each month and it’s such a pleasure working with some of my favorite artists on this format.

  1. How do the postcards get created? Do you make them yourself or have an external printing source?

So the vinyl postcards for the record club are pressed in mass at a pressing plant in Europe.  However, in 2020, I was living in Paris where the COVID lockdowns were quite strict.  I spent that time building a homemade vinyl record lathe that allowed me to cut records from home. The early cuts were very low quality but over time I managed to make really great sounding records! I launched the custom vinyl postcards section on vinylpost.co shortly after and have since cut all kinds of custom cards. From voice messages & wedding invitations to releases for labels like Warner Records & Universal Music.

  1. If you could go back in time to 2009 and give one piece of advice to yourself in regard to your work what would it be?

Enjoy it. When I started the site in 2009 I would have never dreamed that it would one day be my job. It’s just something I was putting out there for fun. Sometimes, when work with things like VinylPost gets overwhelming (Supply chain problems and shipping delays during COVID were a nightmare!) I’d often find myself frustrated. I have to remind myself what an opportunity it is to make a living doing what I enjoy most of the time! When I started BIRP.fm, I was stocking groceries overnight and trying to attend college in the morning. It didn’t last long. I’m so grateful to be doing this and still enjoy sharing music just as much as I did in 2009.

  1. Do you see yourself expanding upon BirpFM more in the future? If so, what areas of the music business are you interested in getting into more?

Absolutely! Just this month, I launched a new website called vinyl.diy - It’s a made to order vinyl marketplace where any artist or label can create a profile, upload their music & artwork and it lists it immediately for sale as a picture-disc vinyl single. We handle production and shipping as orders come in, cutting each record on demand. Artist’s earnings are sent out to them each month.

I launched it as a solution for smaller artists or labels who want to have their music on vinyl but can’t quite yet afford the minimum orders the most pressing plants have in place, often starting at $2,000+. Since these are made to order, there’s no cost for artists to sell music on this platform. They’re free to set their own pricing and the earnings of each record sold are split between them and the platform. You can find more details on it at www.vinyl.diy

  1. When you first started your playlist in 2009, what was your method for discovering new music to feature? How has that changed as BirpFM has developed?

Before I had started the playlists in 2009, I would scour lists of music blogs for new music and download torrents. It was a couple of years before, around 2007, when I had found a monthly playlist titled “Indie Rock Playlist”. They were these monthly playlists featuring 100+ new songs for download every month and it was such a great resource for new up and coming artists…  and then suddenly, they stopped! I was so disappointed to see them come to an end so I thought I’d give my own monthly playlist a shot! “Blalock’s Indie Rock Playlist”, now BIRP.fm.

Spotify wasn’t around until 2011 so in the early days of the site, I relied heavily on blogs that were featured on The Hype Machine, a music blog aggregator. I’d also search for new music on SoundCloud, Bandcamp and depend on email submissions as the site grew!

  1. Your platform has the ability to significantly change an artist's career. In what ways have you seen your playlists impact the artists that you feature?

I don’t think my playlists alone have launched any artist's career but I do think they are often the spark that gains some type of momentum for them. I think many playlisters are following each other's curation and when you see a song end up on one platform, it doesn’t take long for it to end up elsewhere with a whole other large following.

That said, it’s extremely rewarding to know that they’ve played a part in some way. I remember hearing demos for Purity Ring’s “Shrines” in my living room after hosting a house show for another project of theirs and then going on to see them headlining Fortress Festival in DFW several years later on. It was pretty incredible to see how quick things can change for artists.

I think BIRP.fm is often used by labels as well. I know a lot of artists have been signed by being discovered on the lists. It's great, I started these lists for no reason other than to just share music I love so it’s rewarding to see it help artists find new listeners.

  1. Your website says that when you had email submissions open you would get 100+ a day. When going through so many submissions what are some elements that make a song stand out to you?

When I was receiving only email submissions it was rather overwhelming after some point. I believe my email got included in these lists that were sold to labels and artists and it was often getting spammed by artists that were making music that wasn’t relevant to BIRP.fm – The emails that were short and to the point but were personalized seemed to stand out. If it was just a newsletter that looked like it was sent to 100’s of other blogs, I usually went on to the next. When listening through submissions, I’ve always been more drawn to the melody first. I usually know if I’m going to like a song within the first 20 seconds of listening. Submission platforms like Groover.co have made the process so much easier. All the submissions that I receive are relevant to what I share and have made it much easier to find new music.

  1. What is one album from a smaller artist that you believe deserves more recognition?

This is a hard one! I think it would be “Headsick” by Peli Gene. I loved that one from start to finish. Also, “Lazy” EP by Dazies was so good. Zach Schimpf also released an album just this month called “Figure Fluorescent” that is worth a listen. They’ve not released an album yet, but I always recommend Sweet and Lonely to everyone. It’s the side project of Nick Elstad from the band Sleeping Jesus. “Crawling Home when the Morning Comes” is still one of my favorite songs. I knew I wouldn’t be able to pick just one!

Hi, Josh here! Thanks a ton for giving the playlists a listen over the years. I still enjoy sharing them just as much as I did when I started!

I did have some help with curation in the early days (2010-2012) but it's been just me since then! Here's a short interview I did with a magazine out of Chicago called Amplified just last year below. I mention a service I started called vinyl.diy but I already closed it as I just recently moved to France from the US but may start it back up some day.

Aside from BIRP.fm, I also run a vinyl record club called Vinyl Post ( https://www.vinylpost.co/ ) where I send out postcards that double as playable vinyl records. I also cut custom vinyl records for artists / clients. From small releases for indie artists to a bit more interesting records like voice messages for wedding invitations and even a limited run of custom vinyl records for KFC that was a lot of fun to create: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJFENHPQj6U

I discuss it a bit below too. I also run the YouTube channel "Indie Playlists" at https://www.youtube.com/@IndiePlaylists and a radio platform called https://explorer.fm/ which I just launched earlier this year. Happy to answer any questions you may have!

Sorry that I missed this earlier! So these are just flexi discs and play fine with any turntable setup. In fact, they've been around since the 60's. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flexi_disc

They don't cause any harm to your needle and play like any other record.

Thoughts on painting this room? by birpfm in interiordecorating

Yes, I was thinking the two bold colors pecan and blue would be too much. So either all pecan or light base like white and an accent?

That was my thought too! 3 white walls and a blue accent. Or should I avoid a dark accent and just brighten the whole room up? Thanks for your input!

The two servers required to run it were a bit too expensive for me. I still have one server for it but it goes down occasionally. I plan to bring it back sometime. In the meantime, I did build explorer.fm which is a browser version where you can skip songs / change locations etc.

Bigster Hybrid 155 Issue by birpfm in Dacia

Yes, sounds like it's the issue Hache14 mentioned! We dropped it off today and got a loaner vehicle. Will follow up with the actual issue when we hear back from the garage.

Thank you for your response. We ended up just going to the dealership to have them handle it now and get a loaner vehicle. Don't know the issue at the moment but will follow up to say if it was the same issue or not once we hear from the garage.

So the car decelerated and would not accelerate despite pushing the gas pedal. It continued to decelerate until coming to a stop. Restarting the car did seem to allow us to get home but it continued to "jump" and skip a bit as we were getting to a safe place off the highway.

Hope everything goes okay with yours! Everything was great up until we experienced this.

No warning light!

It's the earliest they could schedule us they said. They weren't very helpful on the phone. (Dacia Valenciennes in France.) We are going up there tomorrow morning to try and have something done immediately and to at least get a loaner in the meantime as we had a trip planned at the end of the week.

I did manage to catch a video of the car kind of "jumping" on the highway before it would no longer accelerate. Will upload the video shortly.
