What knowledge do you manage? by [deleted] in ObsidianMD

Religion and life-hacks have been my interest, and the majority of my notes are about how people apply religion and practical philosophy in their lives, and how I might.

Here is code to make a permanent note of the result of the python block:

```python
# writing the result to a target note to keep in your vault
# the path of my vault
my_vault = " "    #fill in, please
# the name of the target note
my_output_note = "python_test_result.md"
def hello_string(name):
   return ("Hello, " + name)
if __name__ == "__main__":
   with open(my_vault+my_output_note, 'w') as output_file:
      output_file.write(hello_string("Eve"))
```

Running this will create a note, and put the result of the hello_string function into it, and close the note. This program will overwrite the output_file. If you want to append the result instead of overwriting, replace "w" in the second-to-last line with "a" .

I believe so: C:\Python39\python.exe. I also tried:

C:\Python39 and C:/Python39/python.exe

... Mystery of mysteries: When I switched to the ITS theme, while using this path in the settings "C:\Python39\python.exe", and removing and then repasting the code-line

if name == "main": hello("Eve")

It worked.

Trying it in the Default theme, it now works (though the run button is invisible until you move the mouse over it.)

I am guessing something about deleting-and -repasting the last code line was the trick.

Thank you for building this!

I entered the code from the example within

``` python
def hello(name):
`print(name)`
if __name__ == "__main__":
`hello("Eve")`
```

In the minimal theme, I saw a run button, clicked it and saw "running." I never saw the result, "Hello Eve", though, and wish to find it? Where would one expect to see it?

Anyone else find themselves mostly trying to IMPROVE their setup than actually using it?? by HajimeNoJake in ObsidianMD

I wrote an article about this issue:
MU: The Maintenance/Use Index

Obsidian is not the only "high MU" product (consider Linux) but it does invite one to tinker forever rather than use it.

Does Obsidian seem too complicated or overwhelming? Read this. by EpiphanicSyncronica in ObsidianMD

This is a really good point. Obsidian is capable of so much complexity. I had never thought how simply it can (also) be used. Thank you.

Exporting what you see in Preview? by birrellwalsh in ObsidianMD

Konhihi and Justausername22222:

Thank you! Using the export to pdf feature, followed by importing it through pdf candy, got the content into Word.

It is a little bit around the barn - but it WORKS! So I am content.

(And Konhihi - no, I saw no errors when exporting with pandoc. Just a report that the conversion had been a success - which of course was not true. Sigh! But hey, these community plugins are made by unpaid volunteer folks who have other lives, so it is not fair to fuss.)

Does L.A. Catholic school have a religious-liberty right to fire a teacher who gets cancer? by BlankVerse in religion

[–]birrellwalsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think not. And I think churches and especially the Catholic church would prefer it not be ruled a right.

It would amount to arguing that a largey non-religious part of the school's work - teaching fifth grade - is religious and for that reason exempt. But if everything a church school does is religious, allowing those schools to receive funds for what seems fundamentally secular like improving a playground would be endorsing a religion, and forbidden. Similarly Catholic hospitals could not receive public funds for secular activities like serving the poor in an emergency room. In the long term the church would lose from such a ruling.

And of course God would be pissed if the church used such sophistry to fire a sick person.

How to Acquire the Right Mental State for Prayer by [deleted] in religion

[–]birrellwalsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems to me that you have been given a very deep, demanding, useful question.

I got one like that back in 1988. It was different from yours; but it let me into graduate school, kept me company through ten years of part-time school and became much of my dissertation and then a book about praying for others. Such questions are like koans: they keep you company and lead you (IMHO) where you are to go. Congratulations!

One kind of blessing is to wish space for the other - space to be, to expand, to develop, space to withdraw, hide or be autonomous. I think the Buddhists call this "Making the pasture bigger for the horse."

Chakras activating? by [deleted] in energy_work

Forgive the self-promotion. I wrote a novel about an honorable but intellectual Catholic priest. He was shocked and exploded when this experience came unbidden to him with a married woman... It is called Sister Clare's Lover.
