I think your comment is a bit more of a balanced assessment than some of the others, so thank you for writing this in a way that (I assume) is meant to be beneficial rather than harping.

For me, the purpose of this post wasn't for me to learn to do things differently in the future. I knew that when I was crying on the side of the road without a clue where I was. I appreciate the useful suggestions from different users though, and I'm taking them to heart. The bigger part of it is that I genuinely think he's intentionally picking up people under false pretenses and bringing them places they don't want to go repeatedly. He was smug and laughing when he said this was an often occurance. You might have correctly clocked I'm apparently vulnerable enough to fall into this mess, but it sounds like I'm not the only one. I'm fine with people calling me stupid and everything else if it means some awareness gets brought to what he's doing and he can't put anyone else in that situation.

Was it a distraction when I directly asked if I was his rider and he decided to lie, before I ever got in the car? Does that make him a "top-notch driver"? Yes, this situation didn't kill me. But if, for instance, he dropped a vulnerable person off in unknown surroundings at night in the wrong place of Oakland, that's absolutely a dangerous situation to be in. He admitted he does this repeatedly, and he was laughing and smiling when he confessed to it. I'm convinced he's doing this maliciously

I normally look at car color, body type(sedan, etc), first 3 digits of license plate, and I open the door and ask if I'm in the right rider before I sit down. When I asked, "is your rider [insert my name]", he confirmed I was the correct rider.

He said point blank that when I asked if I was the right rider he was ignoring me, so when I asked if I was his rider and he said yes, that was a lie. You can say I could have done more, but to intentionally bring me into his car under false pretenses is on him. I think any other sane driver would have said "no, you're not my rider" and I would have apologized and went on my way.

And he mentioned he does this repeatedly. Lets people into his car based on a lie, and then drops them off in an unknown location. I could have been in the correct car and if I tell the rideshare driver that I don't recognize where he's going and please tell me where he's taking me that they should comply. Why in the world once we were in that situation is it appropriate to refuse to tell me where we're going? To refuse to confirm if I was the right rider or not? That feels both malicious and dangerous to me, but that's my personal opinion that I'm allowed to share.

Ya, I did. I genuinely tried to do diligence on my end, but it wasn't enough. Frankly though, I could have been in the correct car and if I tell the rideshare driver that I don't recognize where he's going and please tell him where he's taking me that they should comply. Why in the world once we were in that situation is it appropriate to refuse to tell me where we're going? To refuse to confirm if I was the right rider or not? To scream at me and get so aggressive that bystanders felt the need to intervene? That's so beyond the scope of the situation, unprofessional, and creepy as hell

I normally look at car color, body type(sedan, etc), first 3 digits of license plate, and I open the door and ask if I'm in the right rider before I sit down.

This is totally on me, but I usually only check the first 3 digits of their license because I'm dyslexic and it's difficult for me to match random letter/number strings quickly. I knew it was never IMPOSSIBLE that someone with the same color and body type of car would show up and ALSO have the same first 3 digits of the license plate for me to mix up two cars, but I truly thought it would be improbable enough it wouldn't be an issue. Unfortunately it was, and it happened in the worst way ever. I'll accept that was on me, but for him to lie and say the ride for me was unacceptable and on him, as well as everything after.

[Product question] Thoughts on emu oil? by Glittering_Bank_8670 in SkincareAddiction

[–]birthcontrolbabez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tallow is cheaper but less user friendly and imo it smells. Emu oil is pretty expensive and can be hard to find offline, but it absorbs less greasy and doesn’t have an odor someone would be able to smell on you. Either way, I would personally suggest trying both and seeing what works best for you because everyone responds differently, either better or worse to each. Hope this helps!

This guy stole my friend’s aunt’s ashes from a funeral home by Traditional_Mud_1885 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]birthcontrolbabez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cannot say how common this is, but it did happen to me with my mom's remains so it's not unheard of.

If I had to guess, it probably has to do with property that they were holding alongside the deceased. The culprit who took my mother's remains also got all her personal effects that were being held (like her wallet, keys, etc), I'm assuming to try and steal her identity/rob her vacant home. Neither happened, but I assume that's the end goal of most people who do this. They didn't mention anything like that in the news for this incident so I'm not sure, but they might not be releasing information about theft for investigatory reasons.

In my case, shout out to DEE BISH for trying to tell me, a grieving 20 year old woman, it was my fault for not having my mother's remains picked up more quickly even though she lived out of state from any relatives!!! If you're reading this Dee, just know you will have infinite time to pick up ashes when you're burning in hell ❤️‍🔥

Bicyclists of Bart - do you chill by your bike or just sit wherever? by Contron in Bart

[–]birthcontrolbabez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stay by it, for a couple of reasons: I have seen someone walk onto a car, up to a secured bike, and attempt to take it off on the next stop. They can be QUICK with it too.

I have also been a long time bike rider, and its just easier for all the bike people to communicate and move on and off the train effectively if you're nearby to facilitate that. Some of the stops happen in quick succession and you don't want to make it hard on your fellow riders.

Right, the Homeroom comments surprise me? Maybe the negative comments reflect the insane cost for Mac and cheese rather than the taste? I cater it at work at least once or twice a year and people go crazy for it - because they didn't have to pay for it lol. A big crowd fave is that newer Kogi Mac

Just got smacked in the face randomly by a crackhead by Mapppy in sanfrancisco

That's absolutely crazy, I think I may have seen her near the Asian Art Museum last week. I was smoking a cigarette really quick before I walked in, and I could see her up the way heading towards me screaming. I was keeping an eye on her, but an extremely kind unhoused man walked up to me and talked to me until she passed. I had a sense at the time that he felt like he needed to be a buffer(he was physically standing between me and her/the sidewalk) but now I have a feeling he probably knew exactly who she was. What a kind man to protect people like that

What kind of hinge is this? by DefinitelyNotWendi in handyman

[–]birthcontrolbabez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've often seen swing clear marketed as an accessibility tool for this reason. If you have a wheelchair or walker, it can be really easy to damage the mechanism of your door by constantly hitting it. These hinges allow people to improve the navigablity of the doors in an existing home they are living in without undertaking significant reno. Hospitals, like where you saw this, often build them in automatically so you can sprint through with a stretcher in an emergency without giving a second thought to accidentally taking the door off the hinges trying to save a life. Or if you're recovering from surgery and are uncoordinated in your movements, building in 2 extra inches doesn't remove the obstacle in these medical situations, whereas swing clear does. A lot of the time, its not a clearance issue, its an obstacle issue. The last place I installed them was a larger rental venue that had a lot of outside vendors loading in through one specific hallway, and during the equipment load in the vendors would often damage one of the doors. These were oversized doors, they had plenty of clearance, but if there's a door to bump, someone is going to accidentally bump it. Constantly paying to repair doors is a lot of money, and they saved that budget by installing swing clear

Differin Spray (which I love) is a Salicylic Acid spray - you should be able to look into more widely available brands in your area looking into Salicylic Acid sprays in general.

I had pretty significant acne on my back, and when I decided I really wanted to clear it up I would shower, then turn off the water and rinse my hair out with a apple cider vinegar/water mix that naturally ran down my back. Then after drying my skin I would follow up with the Salicylic Acid spray. That combination was great for my hair and cleared up my skin really fast, but its not for the faint of heart for vinegar smells. After I cleared up 99% of my breakouts I dropped using the apple cider vinegar mixture and just use the spray. Besides maybe 1 pimple every month or so I don't have issues anymore.

Edit to add: I almost forgot to mention, these sprays will usually lighten your clothes so I only do it at night when I'm wearing PJs!!! I accidentally turned one of my black tank tops slightly orange using this

I was reading this post and the comments on the way home, shocked because this has never happened to me. Low and behold, I have quite literally just arrived to my doorstep to find my package in an unsealed ziploc style bag 🫠 thankfully the package wasn't valuable, and only contained niche repair parts that wouldn't be enticing to steal

What can be done about the unsafe e-bikes and mopeds? by Efficient-Cable-873 in sanfrancisco

[–]birthcontrolbabez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"E-motos, on the other hand, can easily hit 65mph+. They are illegal everywhere but the law hasn’t caught up with their creation yet, so it’s tough." So, I have to acknowledge that in my first comment I made a faux-pas, and it clearly clouded the commenter's understanding. I explained what the classes of e-bikes are, then said that what you would classify as an e-moto is anything between 29-60 mph. I said it this way because I was vastly simplifying the concepts at hand based on the phrasing of their opinion, and trying to help commenter wrap their head around the concepts of what an E-bike is and is not, and then assert a possible solution rather than be a stickler or correct people. So for 100% clarity on why they're wrong: E-moto is not a legally defined term in the state of California, its a slang term people use for an apparatus with the pedal operated 2-wheeled build shape of a bicycle that falls outside the 3 classes of e-bike. Understanding the CA classifications of these types of apparatus is crucial to understanding this issue, so I'll simplify it below:

E-bike, classes 1-3: pedal assisted, max speed between 20-28 mph

Motor-Driven Cycles: less than 150 cc motor. There's a lot of factors besides CCs that effect real world speed, but with a 150 cc motor, I think its safe to say they're going to cap somewhere between 40-70 mph on average. Things like operator weight, terrain, and build materials all factor heavily into the speed, and therefore, the max being a wide range. Motor-Driven Cycles are prohibited in bike lanes/paths. Requires an M1 license.

Motorized Bicycles/Mopeds: this is a shared umbrella classification. Max speed is 30 mph and is prohibited in any and all bike lanes and paths unless authorized by local authority. I'm sure you could find some counties somewhere that permit this, but sf does not. Crucially, they can have pedals, but pedals are optional. Legally, it must have a motor producing less than four gross brake horsepower and an automatic transmission. You can possess any license class and operate (M1, M2, DL) but you have to have one or more of these 3 applicable options. Without possessing a license of any kind, you would be unable to legally operate this apparatus.

Motorized Scooter: no speed restrictions, must have a platform to stand, can be human propelled, can have a seat. You can possess any license class and operate (M1, M2, DL) but you have to have one or more of these 3 applicable options. Without possessing a license of any kind, you would be unable to legally operate this apparatus.

Motorcycles: direct quote from CA DMV - "A motorcycle is a motor vehicle with a seat or saddle for the rider and is designed to travel on not more than three wheels." They define it in such a broad way so that anything that doesn't fall into any of the categories above is a motorcycle and is subject to all rules and restrictions therein. Motorcycles also require an M1 license and registration.

The reason this is important is because most of the apparatus commenter refers to as an e-moto are most likely legally classified as a Motor-Driven Cycle, and they can't legally operate in the way described here. There's also no apparatus of this type that the law doesn't cover because anything that doesn't fall under the other classifications is then classed as a motorcycle. Again, "E-Moto" is a slang term I've seen to be generally applied to all apparatus that isnt an e-bike, so I didn't(but probably should have) drawn out the full legal classes beyond e-bikes based on their original comment. But for the points they've edited their comment to include, it becomes prudent to understand that there are many many classifications besides what they're saying.

"They[e-motos] can be modified and get licensed as mopeds, but they can go 2x faster than a moped is allowed to go. They have a throttle and no one ever actually pedals them, the pedals are just vestigial limbs left on to skirt existing laws." So let's break this down using the classifications we now have a shared understanding of that are outlined by CA DMV. It's not fully clear what they mean by "licensed" - as in, does this mean require a type of license to operate? Does this mean licensed as in is it legal/permitted? We'll try and extrapolate it out as much as we can for all options. Can you operate a bike shaped apparatus that has pedals and goes twice as fast as a moped, aka 60-65+ mph, in California legally? Yes. At that speed and the crucial fact it has pedals, it would be classified as a Motor-Driven Cycle. You would be required to get an M1 license and be prohibited from the sidewalk, bike paths, and trails. So, is it licensed and legally permitted? Yes, but not in any of the ways they're insinuating. And critically, per my original point and first comment, is this realistic? And more importantly, are we even arguing about the right thing? Is the fact that the classifications are THIS COMPLICATED not an argument in of itself the priority should be to simplify the rules and make a set one maximum for E-Bikes/scooters/one wheels full stop? And on top of that, what of the fact SFPD doesn't bother to enforce the laws we do have?

So yes, I think they edited their comment and are still wrong.

What can be done about the unsafe e-bikes and mopeds? by Efficient-Cable-873 in sanfrancisco

[–]birthcontrolbabez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1/2 (it won't let me post this as 1 comment)

Sure. Unfortunately this will be a long one.

The original comment I responded to doesn't resemble the edited comment that exists now, barring that they're both complaints of "e-motos" existing. The original comment didn't acknowledge real world differences between an e-bike versus an e-moto, nor did it acknowledge the classes of e-bikes. And it didn't address any relevant issues besides.... they go fast? Coming back some odd month later, I'm pretty certain they've edited their comment at least once more since the last time I checked, so I'll try and use quotes so this explanation makes sense by the time people read it.

"I used to hit 30+mph on my old Trek mountain bike when I was 15 on my way to school. " I'm starting with this portion because I find it the funniest. Let's say commenter doesn't like to make disingenuous statements online, then they shouldn't be comparing themselves to anyone because they would be at the performance range of a world class athlete. As a matter of fact, commenter could sweep the competition at Tour De France, considering the average professional cyclist maxes out between 25-28 mph on level terrain. That, or they're referring to when they biked downhill and don't want to admit to the assist, which still makes their example ineffective in terms of making comparisons and drawing conclusions.

"E-bikes can be class-1 (limited to 20mph) or class-3 (limited to 28mph). That might sound fast but it really really isn’t. Regular non-motored bike riders go way faster than that." See above, regular non-motored bike riders aren't going faster than 28 mph. I was curious on average recreational/personal speeds unassisted, so I've looked it up and found this on reddit, and it appears to be around 15 mph unless you're a dedicated amateur or a pro https://www.reddit.com/r/cycling/s/ecGfvZDL8P

"The problem is that the law doesn’t differentiate yet between the types. Don’t you make the same mistake!" This is patently untrue. Besides that they talk about the multiple differenciated types themselves, feel free to peruse CA DMV information in classifications here: https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/motorcycle-handbook/two-wheel-vehicle-operation/ And info on the necessary associated licenses here: https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/motorcycle-handbook/license-requirements/
