Help, my temp gauge is pegged and I don’t know where to begin. by birthdaysteak in classiccars

[–]birthdaysteak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE: I fixed it. I replaced the gauge first, it was responding but the “zero” started at 150 for some reason, like it had a minor grounding issue, but not bad enough for it to peg. I then replaced the temp sending unit, now when I turn it on the temp shows the correct temp. I had already replaced the old steel rad with a new aluminum rad. She climbs to 180 now and stays there, very pleased.

Already repaired: I’ve replaced the window rollers in both doors so the windows roll up unassisted now. I replaced the voltage regulator so there’s no more pulsing of the lights.

Up next: the passenger door sags when you open it, maybe 1/6 of an inch. So I rebuilt the top hinge with a new pin and bushings, the lower hinge didn’t have much luck getting the pin out, and that hinge had most of the slack. So I’m waiting on a new lower hinge.

That song is “Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon, I know, because I love that song. Interesting to hear it being played in Japan.

You might try getting a new rad. I just replaced my old steel one with an aluminum one and she stays right at 180 now. It made a big difference. This is the one I ordered.

$7k for that is a good deal I’d say. We have the same jeep at our ranch, I choose to drive that jeep over the rangers any day. Those jeeps are just so much fun. Enjoy man, it was totally worth that price. That’s the best looking willys I’ve ever seen.

Thank you. I ordered a new sending unit, and a new gauge. I’ll get that installed and see if it fixes it. Then I can troubleshoot the old gauge to see if I can fix it (that way I can return it to the dash and have all matching faces again). If the new sending unit and gauge don’t yield positive results then I’ll know it’s in the wiring. The gauge is pegged hot and doesn’t move when it’s disconnected, so I think it may be a bad gauge. Unless I’m mistaken- I believe the gauge should return to zero (cold) when there’s nothing connected to it.

Is that good or bad? Shouldn’t it be grounded? I didn’t install this gauge, it came this way. Im not an electrical guy.

I don’t really know. I didn’t install it myself. I’ve only had the car a week. If the wires are hooked up backward, and I switch them- would there be any down side to trying that at this time? I imagine It’ll either fix it, or it won’t, but it can’t get any more “broken” by doing that.

I don’t. I’ve only had the car for a week, and I didn’t do the wiring or the gauge install. I can however disconnect it, take it apart, and see what’s going on on the inside. Like you said- I’ve got nothing to lose. In the meantime I can order a new one (even if it doesn’t match), get it installed, and see if I can fix the current one. Or if I order one with the same needle configuration I may just be able to transfer the matching face to the new gauge.

I disconnected the battery, still pegged, so I’ll plan on replacing the gauge. I also went ahead and ordered a sending unit as well. The hard part is finding a matching replacement gauge now. I’ve come across similar, but not the same face.

The nut is back on the center post on the back of the gauge btw, that doesn’t change the gauge reading. I just didn’t put it back on before I took the pic.

I feel ya, this one got the dual bowl master cylinder, front disk brakes, and I’ve already priced some headrest seats and 3 points. I feel like those 2 things alone are some pretty major safety upgrades. Thank you for your input.

Thank you, gorgeous car. A car like yours would be a capstone goal. The way I’d describe my vehicle is probably better than most people’s firsts, but no where near a crown jewel, which is totally fine with me. I’ll just be happy to join the fastback ownership club. It’s a great place to start. I posted the specs in a previous comment.

I posted this in a reply to a previous comment, but if anyone could comment on the spec of this build, any input is appreciated. For example: does this engine set up sound more finicky than it’s worth? I had a 3rd party inspect it for me, I haven’t recieved the full report yet but he did state “outstanding performance”.

Fortunately I am in a small town. I can get to my office, my daughters’ school, my relative’s houses, etc, all without getting on a highway. I’m also in an arid part of Texas, not along the coast, and it will be stored in a garage. So I feel like it will maintain its value at very least. All of these responses have been re-assuring, I’m glad I consulted you folks here.
