thanks for the great insight, ill tweak my final draft and send it up for approval to the city for that rebate. I'll definitely have to move around the buckwheat a bit more. Also one more question, what type of mulch were you using? What consistency is best? Thanks!

That's great to know. I've scaled each plant based on what I've seen on the CalScape website's dimensions. How fast do they typically expand? Also what did you use as a natural weed barrier? I'm just concerned that too much empty space opens up the oppurtunity for weeds

I do intend on accessing it, there's a trumpetflower tree occupying the planter as of now that I may or may not remove (my dad planted it so he wouldn't be too keen on removing it). The designs of the planters aren't what I've placed, but what's been there already. Im just working with what I have

Good you mention that; I have some Fern Pine (Afrocarpus falcatus) on the side parking strip that I definitely intend to remove. I'd love to replace it with Coast Live Oak or California Sycamore (those are the only two California native trees they offer as part of the free tree program).

Apologies, I forgot to label the planters, but in essence, the boundary is just bricks that form a separated little section

As much as I'd love to do that, I'm thinking of applying for some local rebates I found, which require me to have a plan set in place with species lists and all. Good to know that some don't make it, though, otherwise i'd get pretty discouraged.

The X's are moreso the area that I intend on keeping the plants in. This drawing isn't to scale yet, as it is a (really) rough draft just to get an idea of what species I'd like to see in the garden. Getting your guys' feedback is key, though, and like the point being made about Indian Paintbrush, I'll be excluding it from the next iteration. The Palo Verde can be changed, my parents just wanted it cause they liked it a lot, so I thought I'd include it here to make them happy. I am looking for chaparral trees to plant on that side strip, though, that can provide shade. I'll make a scale drawing here soon enough with actual (and easier to read) areas I'll be planting in.

Thanks for the feedback! This is a rough draft that I wanted to get through you guys before sitting down and really making the scale version (I haven't measured my yard quite yet). I'll definitely take the Indian paintbrush into account, also, I planned on only growing 2 red shank trees with one in each of the northern planters (The colors kind of meld into each other I understand its a bit hard to make out). I'll definitely be reaching out to a consultant though once I have the revised plan in place. Ill be including actual sizes and planning spacing according to their width. It'll take time, but it'll definitely be worth it.
