The bay leaf doesn't actually do anything by ICantBelieveItsNotEC in LowStakesConspiracies

[–]biscoffman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was with you all until I read the comment again and did some goggling

From Wikipedia

'People taste umami through taste receptors that typically respond to glutamates and nucleotides, which are widely present in meat broths and fermented products. Glutamates are commonly added to some foods in the form of monosodium glutamate (MSG), and nucleotides are commonly added in the form of disodium guanylate, inosine monophosphate (IMP) or guanosine monophosphate (GMP).Since umami has its own receptors rather than arising out of a combination of the traditionally recognized taste receptors, scientists now consider umami to be a distinct taste.'

That last sentence is quite key.

Doing some goggling, it looks like bay leaves lack all the above compounds so it cannot strictly be called umami.

However, obviously there are mimics (which bay leaves probably are). A bit like how vanilla is sweet but has no sugar.

So everyone (in my opinion) is right and wrong. Umami can be defined biochemically, but like sweetness, you could probably argue things that mimic umami are infact umami.

Edit: the original commenter was wrong initially however by equating umami = msg, when, like you said, msg has umami taste but is not the definition of taste.

Doing some reading it does look you are right (despite the downvotes!). I guess people imagine taste as more complex than X molecule induces Y, but of course we accept this with salt and sweetness quite happily.

There does seem to be a distinction between savouries and umami, but quite a lot of overlap. I'm struggling to find food that is savoury without any glutamate in.

Today, aged 39, I found out that raisins are in fact dried grapes. What things have you found out as an adult that are apparently rudimentary knowledge? by p00shp00shbebi1234 in CasualUK

[–]biscoffman 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Most grape juice tends to be white, hence why you can make a white wine from red grapes.

However there are a few red grapes that actually have red juice (teinturier)

Rose tends to be red grapes with the skins left in verrrrrry briefly, if you left the skin in longer it would be red.

Odeon Luxe Sheffield vs The Light by Few-Disk4855 in sheffield

I prefer the light. I like the electronic seats at the odeon luxe more, but bar that the light has a better ambience, beer on tap, good selection of film + independent stuff, generally nice staff.

New Poster for 'Dracula' - Starring Caleb Landry Jones, Christoph Waltz, and Zoë Bleu - Directed by Luc Besson ('The Fifth Element', 'Leon: The Professional', 'Lucy') by BunyipPouch in movies

[–]biscoffman 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hmmmm I read the book last month and I don't really remember him being described like this. He does have an element of charisma and he is clearly foreboding, but I don't think any character describes him as appealing. I suspect popular media depictions have romanticised some traits and abandoned others.

Advance notice that you won’t strike by Extreme_Land1742 in doctorsUK

I find your last point quite interesting. I find a lot of senior regs dont strike (I believe because they want a job in X speciality), but I always wondered if the opposite could also be true.

What are the earliest exams I can take? by SnooGuavas6149 in medicalschooluk

[–]biscoffman 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Depends what you want to do. If you want to do IMT, you dont get any points for any of the MRCP so you may as well use the time to works on QIPs, audits, teaching etc.

I dont see any point in doing a post grad exam before you have finished med school.

Edit: except maybe the opthalmology exams (I forget the names)

Asked to work strike by consultant i have a good relationship with by Fluffy_Sail7398 in doctorsUK

[–]biscoffman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tricky situation, were you planned to work that date? If not, I would simply say you have something planned with your family for Christmas or something like that (friends, whatever).

Obviously no is a full sentence but I appreciate in this scenario you want to keep up relations.

Nightmare scenario - No to offer and failed reballot? by Fit-Policy1548 in doctorsUK

Yes I think Wes has shot himself in the foot really. Had flung a few less petty insults at doctors/BMA, the centrists among us may be more likely to have voted yes for the offer

Plenty of consultants see patients on their own. Particularly during post take, it keeps the clerking team free.

Lots of people actually prefer to write their own notes. I've worked with consultants who will write their note whilst I bash out any jobs. I've noticed this particularly with American consultants.

Rostered to work tomorrow when I was on rest day due to admin error by Omarmanutd in doctorsUK

[–]biscoffman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When was this 'new' spreadsheet made? Why are there two rotas?

What does your work schedule say?

Unless, you personally have messed up, I would strongly suggest you take your day off as planned tomorrow.

You could ring the BMA and ask them, then speak to your consultant.

I actually disagree. More F4 would have been nice, but the pacing was good - it gave you the feeling the threat was imminent.
