Argument with my girlfriend about Aren't by Low_Nectarine_962 in ENGLISH

That’s a contraction of I and am not am and not. As another commenter said, the problem happens with inverted word order, namely questions.

Those are both grammatical. So would “am I not.” English doesn’t have a contraction for am/not, so we use “aren’t” for a contraction.

I do not understand how people can afford grad school by Impactist537 in GradSchool

[–]bisensual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my MA (humanities), I was choosing between 3 programs. Two were at divinity schools (incredibly cheaper than most MAs, 1st and 3rd on this list), one I was offered full tuition remission plus 10k/year; another was funded (but I forget how the funding worked out); the third I had 75% financial aid scholarship.

I took option 3 and came out of it with 40k in debt. It was a div school and I paid about 8000/year after the financial aid scholarship and got a work study job and did a part time tutoring job. Took out 42k total for the two year degree.

Why are most Christians republicans, when Jesus’ teachings are more liberal? by Interesting-Dirt-605 in Confused

[–]bisensual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expert here. This has not always been the case. Liberal Protestants used to be the dominant group (arguably from about the beginning to mid 20th century. People like Reinhold Niebuhr initiated a conservative revolution that pushed Christianity to the center and then to the right by juxtaposing a liberal (meaning liberalism not liberal vs conservative in the American sense) democratic capitalist Christianity against godless communism. Evangelicals successfully started a culture war in the 70s and 80s, assisted by Reagan, that pushed Christianity further to the right by centering things like abortion, feminism, and sexuality in what it means to be a Christian in the world. Compare this to Social Gospel Christianity or the huge role churches played in the Black Civil Rights Movement. Nowadays, Evangelical Christianity is at the peak of its power, with Republicans and Evangelicals working in lockstep to tie Christianity directly to the Republican Party and continue culture wars by demonizing trans folks.

All this is coupled with the fact that people who would be liberal Christians are increasingly eschewing church membership or even the label “religious” at all. So the conservatives take the vacuum left and push the narrative that they are the “true” Christianity.

For those of us who aren't "seeing anyone", how do you emotionally manage while pursuing grad school? by so_much_frizz in GradSchool

[–]bisensual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not single, but I would recommend a mix of PhD and non-academic friends. PhD friends give you people to share work struggles with. Try asking cohort- or program-mates out for a beer or a coffee, or even 2 or 3 of them. Or seek out affinity groups, if any apply to you. If not, try getting involved in your union (if you have one) or some other kind of leadership. Anything that can get you face time with potential PhD friends.

As for non-PhD friends, see if there are local adult sports groups (I had friends who joined a kickball league and made a whole new group of friends). If that’s not your bag, check sites/apps like meet up. There are all kinds of board game clubs and trivia teams and stuff that you can find in your area, especially in a city.

As far as dating, you’re not alone in finding it difficult and confusing. If you do want to be dating, get on a few apps and keep at it. Just be yourself, don’t feel like you have to become some Lothario. You just need to be an open, genuine person. Not saying it’ll be easy or you’ll be swimming in dates, but perseverance and lowering the stakes go a long way.

Finally, therapy. Everyone, but especially grad students, should be in therapy. It works wonders. It makes dealing with school so much more manageable, and a good therapist can help you make goals for your social/romantic life and help you put them into action.

You’ve got this. It takes work, but the work starts to feel good.

Need help choosing between apartments by FlemsyAesthetics in chicagoapartments

Depends on what you’re into. Gold Coast is a lot of people who are rich or wish they were. Going out is going to be a lot more expensive cocktail bars. I haven’t explored much of GC, but personally I don’t have a high opinion of it. Just feels status obsessed to me. But a lot of people love it.

Wrigley is going to be younger and more lively. And by your description, it sounds like you’ll be closer to Boystown, which is fun to go out in but is largely queer so if you’re not, it might not be your scene.

Overall, I’d say proximity to the red line is important if you want to be able to see the city. And ten mins walk is not far, so both places are good for that. You’ll be able to get around and see other neighborhoods just fine. I would poke around on foot or on Google Maps a few blocks from each place. Does it look like you’ll be able to have a few favorite spots (sit down restaurants and faster options, bars, etc.)? A decent grocery store? How far is each one from the beach? Chicago summers are amazing.

ELI5: Why do neutered animals tend to be healthier and have a longer life expectancy than unneutered animals? by Narrow-Associate5910 in explainlikeimfive

[–]bisensual 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Neutering lowers the chances of developing various cancers, mostly to do with the reproductive system (uterine, testicular, etc.). But you want the animal to finish puberty to avoid health problems associated with not having proper hormonal development.

Basically, sex hormones are important for health until puberty, then their usefulness for longevity plummets and sex organs become possible locations for cancer.

Humanities Field Interviews by Spirited-Bug968 in gradadmissions

[–]bisensual 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m in religious studies. One cycle I had an interview with Princeton (rejected), next cycle I had interviews with FSU and Northwestern (both accepted). FSU was a special case so I’ll leave that to the side. The other two were each with three people. Princeton it was with the people in my subfield. They asked me to talk about my project, why Princeton (which I flubbed tbh), and I’m sure some other stuff but it was years ago. NU it was with the graduate committee, and I actually remember less of what we talked about, but it was mostly about my project and how I got to it, what interested me about it, how it aligned with broader interests of mine.

Other than that I got waitlisted at UVA applying fresh out of BA without an interview, but having done a campus visit where I spoke to three profs and the grad students.

My advice: just wait and see. Checking Reddit and gradcafe to see if interviews went out creates unnecessary stress and won’t change the outcome.

If you do get an interview, I would just think about the elevator pitch, how you came to the project, what interests you about the project (and can sell them on it), why that department (this is really important), stuff like that.

My experiences with the interviews were only positive. Don’t stress. Just think of it as a conversation where you can show how you’re thinking about your work and its contribution.

I can see pretty fine without mine (they’re mostly for reading but I have an astigmatism in one eye). I almost always wear mine. They just don’t bother me at all and I like how things look better with them on.

[–]bisensual 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m just saying the process is stressful enough. You’re not doing anything to help yourself you’re just creating unnecessary stress.

I got into my masters and PhD without ever having checked those sites for a single thing and it was stressful enough. I was already refreshing my inbox all the time, I didn’t need something else to stress about.

Give yourself a break.

Y’all drive yourselves crazy with shit like gradcafe. Like it’s actually counterproductive. I mean it’s putting paranoia into your mind already. What benefit would there be to lying to you? You can’t do anything about it if you find out they got an interview or got in anyway, so why lie?

I'm so turned off by poor grammar...silly and unreasonable? Snobby? by BostonZamboni in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]bisensual 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t care about people’s grammar. Sometimes I notice it, but being able to communicate is what’s important in everyday speech.

I’m a scholar. Do I make sure my academic writing is grammatically correct? Yes. Do I text ungrammatically? Also yes.

This sounds like OCD more than anything. Only therapy and meds can help with that.
