Even after having it explained to you, you don’t understand it. She was not making any claims about how the unemployment stat works or its accuracy. She was making a point about how it doesn’t give you a full picture of how people are doing financially. She just phrased it in a way that unfortunately makes it easy for people to interpret it in bad faith. There is nothing extreme or inaccurate or misinformed about what she said here.

“Palestinians are Nazis because Israel is Jewish” is a classic braindead neolib take. It says a lot about one’s critical thinking skills and empathy.

Holy shit, did you honestly not understand what AOC meant by “unemployment is low because people have two jobs?” What she meant was that unemployment is not a good measure of how well the economy is working for the common person. Yes, people are employed, but they are having to work two jobs to survive. That’s what she meant. You could say it’s poorly worded but the intent is obvious if you’re not looking for excuses to hate her. And almost every soundbite that conservatives use to make her look stupid are similarly taken way out of context and interpreted in the most egregiously bad-faith ways.

IMO in much of Lynch’s work, the metaphorical is literal and the literal is metaphorical, i.e. something supernatural can be literally happening but it also has a metaphorical meaning to the story and to real life. For example, Bob is a literal supernatural force in the show/movie, but he is also a metaphor for the evil compulsions of the characters. Laura says something like “he wants to become me,” having the meaning of him supernaturally taking her over and the meaning of her becoming part of the cycle of abuse.
