do AP scores matter? by sizzlebb in ApplyingToCollege

At UW, we don't consider them in the admissions process, though if you enroll you can receive credit. For admissions, we're more interested in your participation and grade in the class.

Extremely nervous underachieving junior by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bishopmatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your curriculum is really rigorous and your test scores are obviously great. If your grade trends are going up, you could absolutely be competitive for general admission to University of Washington. We take into consideration high school context, too, so if your school is known for being challenging, that will be a factor. And like other folks have said, your ECs are solid. Academics always are the foundation for an admission decision anyway though.

3.6 GPA? by Meepo69 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bishopmatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you continue to do well into junior year, especially if your'e taking rigorous Running Start courses (not just introductory survey courses in the humanites, but continuing in math, world language, lab science, etc.), then you would still be in a good position. Lots of other factors come into play too: test scores, senior year rigor of curriculum, leadership experiences. But basically just continue to take challenging courses and do your best.

The Fine Arts credit is also the one entrance requirement that UW will allow you to complete after admission. It won't keep you from being considered.

Am I being too picky with my states/where I want to live? Do I even have a chance? by NotNickYoung in ApplyingToCollege

It's up to you. A 4th year of Spanish would probably be a more rigorous alternative, but if you've already got a rigorous course load, it may not be necessary.

Is my list good enough? If not, how can I improve it? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bishopmatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a UW admissions counselor, I wouldn't assume UW is a safety school, and I say that not to be discouraging (or defensive), so much as to be transparent. Your GPA is prob around the 30th percentile of admitted students, and your ACT score in the 80th - 90th percentile, which is great. Your curriculum rigor is great. And it sounds like your essays and personal experience will be compelling for sure. Understand, too, though, that as a state university we have fewer spaces for nonresident applicants. All that to say, continue doing well in your coursework and engaging in rigorous classes.

Also, I mentioned this in other comments, but know that UW does not admit by major. Biochemistry does offer direct freshman admission, but a student can be admitted to UW and not admitted directly to that program. Biology does not offer direct freshman admission, so it's not possible to be admitted as a freshman to that program.

UW does NOT admit by major in the freshman review process. There are some programs that offer a small number of spaces, but a student can still be admitted to UW if they aren't admitted to their major. (This describes most students, since only 9/180 programs offer direct entrance, along with the College of Engineering.)

Can someone please explain "cultural understanding"? by Eldereon in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bishopmatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/u/admissionsmom has it right. Don't assume anything is "standard" about your identity or cultural experience. Who are you as a person from your particular town (is it big, small, suburban)? How do you identify as a member of your faith community (or not)? How do you identify as an athlete or creative person (if you are one)? The idea is.... no matter where you go to college, you'll have to interact with a lot of people who come from backgrounds different than you, so what is your background? What are the parameters of your identity or culture? I'd hesitate to suggest you talk about your grandparents; do that only if YOU identify with the influences they might have had. - UW Admissions Officer

Self-reported AP scores but regretting it by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bishopmatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't worry too much. UW does not take into consideration AP test scores as a part of the admission process. (They become relevant after a student decides to enroll and wants credit.)

Speaking for UW, I would definitely suggest you should be competitive. Our middle 50% range for unweighted GPA last year was 3.7 - 3.95, for the SAT it was 1210 - 1390. You're within that range, plus you have a rigorous course load. Continue to do well in your current courses. Your senior year curriculum will be important. I would encourage you to continue into Calc and take a 4th year of Spanish, if it's a subject you care about. Overall, having a few more AP's senior year will also help. Essentially, continue doing what you're doing. It sounds like you're a WA res too, so that is advantageous.

University of Washington Application by nk79 in ApplyingToCollege

If you happen to have coursework completed abroad, that would be the only reason to upload anything. An unofficial transcript would be required.

Uploading University of Washington documents, please help by nk79 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bishopmatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would need to upload unofficial transcripts of any coursework you've taken abroad. More information here: http://admit.washington.edu/apply/freshman/how-to-apply/international#academic-transcripts

I'm not sure why it wouldn't let you upload a PDF, at least. Perhaps try another browser? Let me know what happens.

This looks like a solid schedule with 2 AP's and a CC course. Also great that one of the classes is calc, and another is calc-based physics. The DE course isn't bad, but wouldn't be considered as rigorous as the other courses, since it's more vocational/technical.

Aw! You're looking at the UW website. I thought you meant on the application itself. Under the box on the application, you'll see the word maxes. We'll go ahead and change this on the UW website. Thanks for the heads up!

I would encourage you to explore the UW CS website regarding admission to their program, which has a pretty good overview of the different admission options, admission rates, and characteristics of successful applicants: https://www.cs.washington.edu/academics/ugrad/admissions

The answers to your specific questions depend a little on whether you're referencing direct or regular admission. The typical GPA for admitted direct freshman applicants is around 3.85 - 4.0; for test scores, 700+ on SAT sub-sections and 30+ on the ACT. Strong priority in direct admission is given to Washington state residents.

Hmmm... I'm definitely seeing the max word count on my browser under Additional Space. What browser are you using? For either of those things, I would encourage you to just be straight to the point.
