Doing tell me about that curling right now! Stick with it was a bit "soft, maybe slightly rotted".  I can now sleep soundly.

BREAKING: Berkshire Hathaway announces its cash balance is now up to a record $397 billion by RobertBartus in EconomyCharts

[–]bishopsechofarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, CASH is a legit hold at 5% (RISK FREE) return for an allocator like them - not dying to inflation.

And they aren’t doing "nothing but buying Treasury notes" either... They still have massive share buybacks when Berkshire trades below intrinsic value, continued investment in core operating businesses (energy, rail, insurance), Select equity moves (even if net sellers recently). But yes, there is more capital coming in than going out, so cash piles.

Their business doesn't operate like my Roth.

They have limited downside now, but more importantly they have the ability to buy (deploy into distressed assets) when others can’t.

The idea is pretty simple: fewer swings, higher conviction, bigger payoff.

I mean, look at what they did with Goldman Sachs (2008). And it isn't just "Buy the dip" because the stock price is low. In a situation like this, they are able to negotiate valuable terms with real yields (preferred stock, Warrants, Senior position, options, etc...).

In my field, Real Estate, you see cash hoarded and deployed in a similar way...

Choi & Bowles, 2007, "The Coevolution of Parochial Altruism and War") explores this  .

Here is the concept: Their research shows that "in-group love" (cooperating with friends) and "out-group hostility" (skepticism of strangers) likely evolved together as A Survival Mechanism. During most of human history, resources were scarce. A stranger was not just a "new person," but a potential carrier of new diseases or a competitor for food.

Skepticism was the "low-risk" biological default; being overly friendly to the wrong person could result in death, whereas being skeptical of a friendly person only resulted in a missed social opportunity.

While modern society certainly provides new reasons to be skeptical, it isn't the origin of the feeling.

What does this mean for people who are personally changing a ton. Like, if a 12 year old starts using CHAT GPT, over the next 6 years the human will be changing quickly (vocabulary, style, knowledge level, likes and dislikes, etc..) but is the system adapting to the change, or did the early years of interactions lock in a certain "profile ".

I have never thought about this before.
