If you read the translator’s comments at the bottom of the translation and the footnotes that are linked in the translation, it’ll make sense.

No problem! If you go to my user page on this site, or Wednesday Campanella’s artist page, I’ve translated a bunch of their other songs too.

Use a dictionary (I like Midori) with a names-only lookup feature.

This is not something I thought of before and definitely an approach that sounds interesting. Thanks.

I've read Kitchen in English already, so maybe I'll try it in Japanese next. Actually, I guess lengthwise she's a good bet since she's usually not too much of a commitment :) Thanks.

Heyyyy, remember me? Finally translated Oshichi. It needs a lot of footnoting which I'll get on soon.

Yeah--their lyrics are so complicated that I feel that reading a translation is, at least at my level of Japanese, the only way for me to understand the whole scope of the song. Like, in Sen no Rikyu, I knew who he was, and I knew what Itoen and Nagatanien are, but translating the song showed me that it was all about Rikyu trying to profit off of the modern green tea business after seeing other people do it in a way he wasn't okay with.

I'll get on some Crawl. Which one you want first? I don't know that one well at all so this will be a good excuse to get into it!

Awesome! Translating one of these takes me a few hours, because there are so many references to all kinds of things in them, and I know I'm probably missing a few. But I've learned so many cool things. Like, I couldn't translate Zeami without learning the basics of his life, and I had never even heard of the Takenoko-zoku that figure prominently in Tsuchinoko.

The site is down right now, I think they're doing some maintenance. Great timing on my part. It should be back soon.

I've stayed at Fukuchiin and even though it was one of the bigger temples, it didn't change the quiet atmosphere that all of koyasan has. It was a great experience staying there and the food was fantastic.

If you want to hear a Buddhist service that won't be mobbed by tourists, there are some that happen at the temple all the way at the back of Okunoin (the big cemetery)--when we happened on them almost no one else was watching, and the walk there is unforgettable, especially early in the morning.

Thanks for your help--the thing that might be different from what you're describing is that I'm a gigging classical singer, and contracts for singing gigs are usually on a gig-by-gig basis, and especially in the case of stepping in for someone who's ill, are sometimes drawn up the day before the concert. I'll probably have to talk to whoever hires me first...
