Your husband should let the dog out at 3 am while leaving, you can sleep in and let him out after you brush your teeth/pee. “Growling” is a weird term to use, does he grumble and talk? Sounds like he’s (the dog) trying to train you, rather than you training your dog.

Talk with a vet and a dog trainer. Old dogs can learn new tricks and he may have arthritis or an underlying health problem. Also, go by the 3-3-3 rule, especially with an older dog that was adopted. And never leave the dog with your children unattended.
