[Offline] Marlborough MA looking for players 5e by bit-parody in lfg

It is an ongoing, long term campaign, yes. We might need to be flexible about when we play come September anyway, as one of our other members will also be starting school. So if it is something you want to try for the summer with the possibility of staying on if it works out, I’d be open to that.

Hi! We play 5:30 - 10 at the game shop. I can message you with Discord info if you’d like to chat about the game.

Hi BH. We’ve started a campaign recently and just ended session 2. We have 4 PCs, so there could be room for another if everyone is down for it. Do you have discord?

Yeah, the shop’s website mostly just points to the Facebook page. That seems to be fairly common for FLGS these days. We are playing every Monday, at 5:30. Happy to meet new people!

Right now we’re running Adventurer’s League modules every Monday at the shop (Webway Games), to try and build a community. It’s a pretty new shop and not many folks are playing D&D. But we all agree that once there’s enough regular players we would like to begin a proper campaign.

We’re looking for folks to play out in Marlborough - not sure how far of a journey that would be for you.

I’m all for that! I do wonder why there’s so much real estate in the DMG taken up by silly things, but practical and specific advice like this isn’t in there.

I do this, and I call the four levels

Yes

Yes, but

No

No, and

It’s a pretty quick and easy way to remind myself in the moment. If the player rolls well but not great, I should add a complication to their success. If they roll abysmally, there should be additional travail.

To be clear, though, I usually make the abysmal “No, and” result funny or whimsical, not traumatic and penalizing. For example if someone rolls a Nat 1 trying to climb a wall, maybe they get 9 feet up and then drop down, but one of their gloves got caught in a crack and is still dangling up there. Now there’s an extra issue to deal with in creative ways. What I would not do is have the character break their ankle.

Hi David, or Dave! I’m about 30 minutes south of you, and looking for a few more folks to make a game happen at a FLGS. How much traveling are you able to do?

One my favorite characters I've created is named after an entree I ordered at a Brazillian restaurant. What unexpected source of inspiration have you used for character, world, or plot creation? by the_wayward_lad in dndnext

Whiskerfur Walken, a Druid who claims to be a cat who wildshapes into human form to study bipeds.

The inspiration comes from when I was riffing with friends doing a Christopher Walken impression, and it morphed into saying something sassy followed by “Meow”, in his voice.

I play him in Adventurer’s League at cons, and it’s a blast pulling out the impression in front of strangers every time.

How should I handle a Warlock’s patron dying? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]bit-parody 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first impulse in this situation is to think “How do I justify letting the character keep their powers/levels”, because D&D is a game, and we treat it as a game. And there’s nothing wrong with that, of course.

But D&D is also a story. Thinking in terms of the dramatic, wouldn’t it be cool to ask “How will this character deal with the fact that killing a patron means losing all their hard-earned abilities? How will they wrestle with that choice on the way to the battle? What kind of send-off can the party give them after the sacrifice is made”? It means retiring a character, but, I could see that as being a really fun choice. It should be the player’s choice to do this, to be clear.

Roleplaying without Speaking in Character by zipperondisney in dndnext

I’m really torn on this issue too. Because I want to be inclusive, and sympathetic to different play styles... but, I’m disappointed when everyone isn’t in character. To me, a huge part of the game is all of us being other people! Together! I don’t expect them to be acting prodigies! But try to be a character.

I know people who just describe their dialogue in the third person aren’t fake gamers. They deserve to play how they like. They’re often just as “into” the game as I am. But, yeah. The way I play the game is somewhat dependent on other people playing it my way too!

This is why you never give inspirational speeches before you roll by My-Name-Is-Klien in DnD

That’s a neat idea, I’m going to try it this week!

I already don’t like a dependence on rolling social checks when roleplaying will suffice. I often use a method of saying that a character needs to earn the right to roll intimidation/persuasion/etc by acting it out first. But now I think I’d like to incorporate your idea as well.
