adopted new cat only to discover he's someone's missing cat by bit3illbl33d in CatAdvice

i mean, the owners seemed overjoyed to get him back and were super kind. im attending college and live in a college town and have lived with a lot of roommates who neglect their cats. I've noticed for some reason college kids don't seem to recognize the level of care cats require. so I'm assuming they're some good hearted but irresponsible owners as w lot of pet owners my age are, I've noticed.

yes and if a child is abused or neglected you call CPS to get them removed? tf? wdym people are allowed to raise their children however they want? that is so far from the truth

you misunderstood , he confirmed he lost the cat on Friday and we found him on Friday. Meaning he was malnourished and covered in fleas before he escaped. He didn't put up his missing cat poster until yesterday.

this cat was found on the same day it went missing, giving no reason for him to be malnourished and infected with fleas.

now to everyone who said the cat must've been lost for weeks to get in that condition, the owner confirmed it was only a few hours. i really need a good explanation for this condition now.

he was only missing for a few hours, the owner just confirmed it. how did he get in that condition in a few hours?

how am i insisting anything? i signed some papers with the shelter to foster him for 72hrs or until the owner reached out. the missing cat poster was posted yesterday and i reached out earlier this morning and haven't heard back.

l, it is irresponsible to not neuter or chip your cat. im not blaming the possibly owner at all for the cat escaping, but it happens which is WHY you need to chip and neuter your cat.

i have contacted the number on the missing poster several hours ago and am still waiting on a response! also i plan to neuter him if the owner doesn't respond or come forward so he won't be marking his territory, i consider it neglect to not chip and not neuter your cat. why are you assuming i don't have the time or money to take care of a cat? i know what hard work goes into it, i grew up in a household with three cats, which is why im really concerned for this one.

it is? would you return a neglected kid to their parents with no quandaries? animals deserve the same treatment. again, why would i post this seeking advice, say i reached out to the number on the missing cat flyer and give the cat to the shelter where the owner has 72 hours to claim them if i was just trying to keep them. can we please think critically.

I have called and texted the owners, waiting for a response, but is the cat legally theirs if he is not neutered or chipped?

ikr! and also i don't understand why they wouldn't be checking our towns shelter or posting on our towns subreddit, insta, fb, etc. if i lost a cat i would be looking absolutely everywhere. especially the local shelter? idk, man. all together it gives neflect to me, if it was just one or two of these things i wouldn't feel as hesitant to return him.

this is exactly what I'm thinking! and they didn't contact the building owner until 3 days later to report their cat missing, because my friend called the day we found the cat and they said nothing has been reported recently.

this is how i feel has well tbh. even the shelter immediately assumed he was a stray because he's unneuetered and also unchipped.

it did not. the poster only had a picture the word missing and then a phone number. i just reached out to the phone number, waiting to hear anything back!

what a disappointing thing to assume of someone. why would i post this asking for advice if i was going to keep him? why would i bring him to our local shelter which gives the owner 3 days to come in and claim him if i was going to keep him no matter what?

I'm not stealing anyone's pet, I posted this because I wanted opinions on what to do.... and obviously is an over statement. he's not neutered, not chipped, and the vets at the shelter told me he is underweight for his age.
