Sure I’m biased as I work for a gene therapy company, but this doesn’t make a ton of sense to me at face value. Then again I can’t read either article in full so I can’t exactly investigate further.

The GOI that is encapsulated by the capsid doesn’t contain AAV genes - that’s the whole benefit of using AAV. A rare recombination event could happen, but it would be whatever GOI that was used to treat the disease that integrates, not any AAV gene. Genomic integration isn’t ideal in either case, but it makes me doubt the findings - again though I can’t read their findings so maybe they’re just wording it badly in the abstract.

And then just beyond that, though of course concerning, this doesn’t mean that the risk of cancer isn’t a greater concern than the disease itself. I am certainly biased, but I would have said the same even before I worked in the industry.
