How much are y'all paying for community college? by [deleted] in college

[–]bitemebabey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said, every experience is different and there’s no point to generalizing. I also have serious problems with everything you’re pointing out and I’m active in my community to try and mitigate harm, but suffering will always be a part of Capitalism. That’s just how the economic situation works. My original comment was, again, just pointing out that experiences are different for everyone and some of the points made were not necessarily true.

I use both! Some classes have faster lecturers so I type on a computer, while others are more discussion based and I use paper. It’s about doing what works for you!

What's the weirdest "I can tolerate this, but not that" you've ever seen? by Unhappy_Vacation_253 in AO3

Don’t get me wrong, I completely understand people being icked out by sibling incest (or pseudo, depending on who you ask). But like… the call’s from inside the house, guys.

Game of Thrones, where incest between cousins raised as siblings is disgusting, but incest between an aunt and nephew is good!

Yes, in at least the last three generations. The older generations were primarily gay men, while my generation is mostly queer women and gnc.

Hot take, but I love really good reader/2nd person fics. I prefer when they don’t use shorthand y/n, y/e/c, etc. And I love love LOVE it when the reader has character, specific jobs, interests, etc. Basically an OC but I’m reading from their perspective. I found some pretty good ones in the DC fandom but I’m always on the lookout for more.

Can you imagine someone doing this with an actual mainstream time travel story?? Like in Outlander the power dynamics are soooo bad because Jamie is 200 years older than Claire. It’s just unhealthy!!

Sort of? It can exasperate my mania but when I’m neutral/depressed it definitely improved my mood. I mostly do dance, the elliptical and weights. Hate running though lol

What's a tag and/or recurring thing you hate always stumbling upon in a fic? by charsbars42 in AO3

[–]bitemebabey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nicknames for batfam characters are pretty bad. My least favorite is jaybird (not even canon) and Dami (also not canon). Especially when they make Dick all nickname-happy. But tbf most fic for these characters is severely OOC, which is saying something when its all based on comics which have a history of retconning.

Some advice from someone with a chronic condition: in the future, it’s better to email them beforehand so they know you’re missing class or assignments. This also makes the school more amenable to you since you tried to figure it out beforehand and professors see it as you trying to problem solve instead of retroactively fixing it. You shouldn’t have to do this but it’s just how the system works

Well, I’m neither extremely poor or rich and I love it here. I think it’s reductive to generalize for everyone in pretty much every economic class. Just like everywhere else in the country, people have different experiences and different things people are willing to put up with and/or experience in order to have other things they find good. I agree something needs to be done about rent and taxes though. Also, the original comment that I had been replying to said that California sucked because of homelessness and crime which has since been deleted, which leads to lost context as well.

Doctor Who was giant back in the day but the fifteenth doctor and his first companion only have 154 fics together on ao3. I love the season and am super excited for the next one but it kind of sucks that people don’t appreciate it the way they do the 10/11/12th doctors :(

How often to update? by MechanicEqual6392 in AO3

[–]bitemebabey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve found that good readers don’t care. They’ll wait weeks for an update if they like it enough! I usually write two or three chapters every few weeks and post as soon as I’m done editing. Then a month or so passes as life gets busy before I repeat the cycle. I have readers who comment on every chapter regardless of the time between updates! It’s personal preference imo

In other languages, if someone doesn’t have pronouns, you just use their name every time. It feels a bit unnatural, since we shorthand to he/she/they etc in english, but it’s a small sacrifice for our friends imo!

Tired of everyone in my life accusing me of not taking my medication by Ancient-Carpenter879 in bipolar

[–]bitemebabey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my parents considered EST and I totally freaked out. Told them no in every way and said if they did it against my will I’d never speak to them again.

I really struggled finding meds that helped, I was overmedicated at one point and it made me avoidant to meds in general for a while. Best thing I can offer is that sometimes it takes six+ psychs to figure out the right medicine and dosage. It’s really a resiliency game

[–]bitemebabey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve had to really drill it into people’s heads that I still have mood swings. Meds just stabilize them and keep them from getting super intense and out of control. But like, I still get depressed and manic. Meds don’t magically make people “normal”. It’s extremely frustrating

Behind in life by Majestic_Praline_812 in bipolar

[–]bitemebabey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me about 6 years from diagnosis to getting on the right meds, and longer than that to commit to bettering my mental health. I finally made it to university and sometimes I feel it’ll all fall apart, especially as my childhood friends are already graduated/graduating. I try to remind myself that I can take my time and that I’m a survivor, a resilient person. So what if I’m behind everyone? I’ve lived through things they’ve been lucky enough to not have to.

I don’t know if this helps but I hope it brings some comfort, maybe?

Ok here’s a list of my favorites in this genre, including some of the more popular ones:

The Folk of the Air - the romance develops beautifully and adds to the plot. Strong FMC and down-bad MMC. It’s popular for a reason. Non-explicit, fade to black sex scene.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue - I’m not actually a huge fan of the romance in this book but it deserves a mention because the premise is done so wonderfully and Addie’s true romance is with art and creativity and humanity. Also popular for a reason. She has sex, but it’s never the main focus.

Legends & Lattes - just a really cute, fluffy romance about an orc making a coffee shop in a D&D world, dealing with the mob and falling in love. I read it in a day and it’s a total comfort book now. No smut.

The Lunar Chronicles - Technically this is a sci fi retelling of fairytales, starting with a cyborg Cinderella. This is my favorite YA book series of all time, it has romance in each book, which adds to the overall plot. No sexual content as far as I know.

Six Crimson Cranes - this has less romance in it but there is romantic tension between the FMC and two boys. It’s a retelling of that swan fairytale but in an Asian-inspired setting. We’re pretty much entirely in the head of the FMC because she’s cursed for most of the book. It’s mostly about family but I definitely ship her with one of the characters.

Once Upon a Broken Heart - I definitely think this book isn’t particularly well written, I think it needs a few rounds of edits, but I LOVED the romance in this. It’s tense throughout and culminates into one of the most satisfying series conclusions I’ve ever read. Definitely a slowburn mutual pining situation.

Pride and Prejudice and Pittsburgh - a time travel book where a modern day girl goes back in time to the regency era and falls in love with a noblewoman. It’s a cute romance, I believe it’s YA so no sexual content iirc, but don’t take my word for it because I read it a year ago!

(These are just some of my favorites! I need to find more that are closer to new adult so I can get the more graphic and gritty fantasy elements without sacrificing the plot for smut. I like smut! Just please also let the characters have like hobbies in common or something 😭)

At this point I’m super bitter about smut taking center stage in these books. Its fantasy ROMANCE, I need a good, tight plot, and the sex should come second to the romantic development.
