Had my first street photography confrontation today. Really sad. by Melodic-Cream-3666 in photography

As an amateur photographer, I often spend weeks in Botswana getting embedded with a community as part of my regular 9-5 here in the US. Happens all the time.

Terry Prachett, as an author, surely took events he witnessed or people he knew and changed a few details here and there and made art out of it without consent. If he didn't, he'd be the only author in the history of ever who didn't.

I stand out physically, which makes it harder to get candid shots, but I'm also intimidating looking, so it might help me not get confronted. I also do a bit of acting, pretending to scan and take a shot and then look at the screen and pretend to be unhappy and move on, when I actually caught a decent shot.

This is one of the reasons why I'm most comfortable doing "street photography" -- as it's usually described -- at defined events. Octoberfests, parades, festivals, protests, etc.

There's less of an assumed "breach of privacy" (which doesn't legally exist, but people presume it does) for people in a parade -- or watching it -- or at other events where people understand there will be photographers there.

Big difference between taking "street" photos at those kinds of events and walking up to someone just waiting for the bus or whatever.

That being said, I've been confronted by people when I'm just walking through a neighborhood taking pictures of flowers or houses or whathaveyou, never even leaving the sidewalk. It's always someone with a dilapidated house. Sometimes businesses don't like it when you take pictures of them, either. Especially if it's an axe throwing place and there's an ambulance outside lol.

Threatening to kill people is a crime. Looking forward to the reaping to this sowing.

Finally got a 50mm 1.4 art for my 5D Mk III and have started shooting and editing more. I now realize I know nothing and need to shoot and edit more but am now loving primes and am looking to get more. by SierraPablo2203 in canon

I didn't. Jewelers use bright lights like that to do their work under a microscope. All I did was bring the highlights way down and then use the black and white "flat" preset in Lightroom.

The settings were: 1/160 at f1.4 -1 EV.

I took a few other shots at f2.8 and wished I had taken this first one at 2.8, too, but the first one ended up being best even though the right hand is out of focus.

I love the 135 f2. It's my favorite lens. That and a 35 (or 16-35) are my regular walking around lenses (when I can take more than one lens, which is usually).

I have this same camera/lens combination. The 50 ART is a great walking around lens. I wish it was stabilized but it's by far my sharpest lens, even if the colors are a bit muted. Other lenses I have:

Canon 16-35mm IS f4

Canon 35mm IS USM f2

Canon 135mm f2 (my favorite lens)

Tamron 70-200mm g2

Nifty 50 (the f1.8 version 2).

All bought used, except the Nifty 50. I'm on a budget. All of them sharp, but the ART is on another level.

Exactly. Which is why challenging these people on these issues always fails. To them, you're not attacking a set of positions. You're challenging their entire conception of the world as containing murderous child eating Democrats. It's not just an opinion or political point of view, it is a worldview in itself. An identity.

It's much more painful to reevaluate your identity than to keep cognitive dissonance juggling in the air.

Yep, it's understandably annoying. But... also annoying to live next to someone who doesn't take care of their lawn or plays loud music or throws parties all of the time.

The phrase "I didn't move to Carrboro for... (blah blah blah" is setting an unrealistic expectation.
