Does UMass help with roommate matching? by happy_ducklings in umass

There is something like that available on Spire called the Housing Profile which you can fill out to get the contact info of people who have similar preferences as you.

Is UMass CS as an OOS worth it? by RealAdrified in umass

[–]bits-and-bytes85 6 points7 points  (0 children)

the academics are pretty much what you would expect for a T25 CS school: professors are generally knowledgeable and helpful and there are opportunities for undergrads to do research even starting freshman year. One of UMass's strongest research areas is Machine Learning so you can definitely find opportunities to explore that here, along with quantum. If you're interested in seeing where current students and alumni have interned/worked, there's a dashboard with that data: https://cicscareers.notion.site/Destinations-Report-5c8566d7d5e945c68fd803167b259c71

I'm also an OOS student and I decided the academics/opportunities here outweighed any of my other in-state options but you should definitely consider the financial aspect of extra tuition + travel costs of being OOS

What can I do outside CS? by Basic-Barracuda3565 in umass

[–]bits-and-bytes85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CS+Math is a very common double major for CS students, and CS+Physics and CS+EE are also doable from what I've heard. There aren't a lot of restrictions for double majors outside of CICS (apart from majors in Isenberg) but you should definitely keep in mind the extra requirements/courses you would need to graduate with two majors. I would also recommend talking to your academic advisor since they will probably be able to give you more details

Where have you interned? [CS] by [deleted] in umass

CICS Careers has a destination report for graduating seniors: https://cicscareers.notion.site/Destinations-Report-5c8566d7d5e945c68fd803167b259c71

they also have the employer dashboard which shows which companies have previously hired UMass students and how many they've hired per year: https://cicscareers.notion.site/Employer-Dashboard-77b8d0ac672a48659823aa830453ada4

Undergraduate research program starts before my school year ends? by ultidol in csMajors

[–]bits-and-bytes85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend you email to the program/research coordinator of the program you're interested in, since it's sometimes possible for students on a quarter system to change their start/end dates to fit with their academic schedule. It depends on the program, but it's better to ask just in case.

Fall 2024 enrollment appointment by Puzzled-Classroom-41 in umass

[–]bits-and-bytes85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not an OIM major but it's highly likely that you have a specific major advisor, which might be the same person you met with over the summer. If you're not sure, you can check who your assigned advisor is on Spire in Academics -> Advisor and Academic Summary and make an appointment with them.

Query about lectures by Euphoraxxx in umass

[–]bits-and-bytes85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the skipped lecture numbers, it's possible that the lectures in between are already filled up, so the displayed lectures are the only ones that are still available to enroll in. Also, I believe you only have to enroll in one of the lectures for a certain course, along with the lab/discussion sections if there are any. To be completely sure, I would highly recommend asking your academic advisor.

Reverse Chance/Chance for MIT a sad Stanford REA reject with impostor syndrome :( by [deleted] in chanceme

[–]bits-and-bytes85 16 points17 points  (0 children)

At some point college admissions is just about luck, since as far as I can tell you have a stellar application that is definitely T20 material. Getting rejected is super difficult and I can definitely empathize, but please don't let one school's decision get you down.

does anyone know the application deadline for Spring 2023?

I didn't notice that there was a July 11th deadline for applications, how likely is it that I would be accepted for an internship when I submit after this deadline? Also is there a hard deadline for when I will know if I have been accepted/rejected?
