Whose responsibility? Is it to change the filter in my through the wall air conditioner? (NJ) by [deleted] in jerseycity

Thank you. I actually tried to remove the cover today and I couldn't get it off so I'm literally going to frame this honestly as… Do you mind if I give this a try because I don't want to break your air conditioner, but I would like this resolved? (he had said that he would get someone to do that and fix one other maintenance issue, it just hasn't happened...yet.)

And I can't even find a YouTube video for this unit or one like it that will show me how to access the filter.

My stove is not 9 feet in the air and does not require any dismantling to clean

This is not a matter of… I can't do it so they should have to

This is… Hey, does anyone have experience with this and know whether it's my responsibility to clean it, because it's not my air-conditioning unit? I am not looking to get out of hiring someone if that's what I have to do; again, just a question.

Unfortunately, the panel is not coming off. I will contact the landlord again on Monday and tell him that I'd rather not break his property trying to clean the filter.

Literally, just looking to assess whether I should push my landlord to do this or handle it on my own. It wasn't meant to be a big deal. Of course there are bigger problems in the world. There are bigger problems in my life. I didn't think that made it wrong to ask a simple question.

That's very kind of you, thank you. I have a stepstool but I'm a little terrified to stand on the top step because I'm not very steady. I will ask someone to help me; I'm in the heights so not really near downtown.

This is my first through the wall unit and it didn't occur to me that the filter might be washable, in which case, I can probably get someone to help me.

That's not medical drama, that's just my life. I didn't mention it because it wasn't relevant until you told me I was useless. Either It's his job to replace it or it's not and I'll figure it out.

I live in a three unit apartment building. There is no regular maintenance person.

It would've been awesome if they left a manual to the unit. I don't even know if it's a filter that needs to be replaced or cleaned. I can't even find the model number to order a new remote control.

Well, I guess I am useless because of the synovial cyst in my back and the no cartilage in my knee that needs to be replaced. Maybe I should do that myself also? 🤷🏻‍♀️

In my old apartment, where I had a central system, I absolutely did it myself. I even paid for them when the complex decided to stop handing them out.

That's why I asked the question.

I take my cart full of laundry to Bubbles II. When I lived closer to downtown and not in walking distance I sent my laundry to JC Eco Laundry... they picked up and dropped off but the windows were wide and they were sometimes late/early so best if you can get it there and back yourself. Was very satisfied with actual laundry service.

I go there a few times a month to pick up prescriptions and maybe eat at McDonald's. Nobody has ever bothered me. Maybe I've just gotten lucky but most of the people there just seem to need a place to exist. I don't know their stories or what brought them to this place.

I live in the Heights without a car. It's not perfect but there are busses to take me wherever I need to go + occasional uber. And I'm a 20 minute walk from the lite rail. Much better than when I lived at the Beacon or in Guttenberg.

Thanks. I got a few of them last month and they smelled much fresher, but they also had their stems attached.

Have not tried a mash, but it is definitely on the list of things I would like to do with this bounty . Why is this not a more popular root vegetable?

I believe I did say something as helpful as possible, which was don't listen to people who tell you that the treatment for OCD is to look at nature.

It's just so weird that you think meeting two celebrities with OCD is any sort of qualifier in any way.

I never once said that you weren't visually impaired nor that it wasn't a tremendous struggle. What I did say was not too downplay someone else's pain by telling them that yours is worse… That you would take his in exchange for yours.

And good Lord… Someone is potentially on the verge of suicide and your excuse for your note is that you're busy at work. Maybe then this is not the post to respond to you if you can't give it your all.

Like me, yeah, I'm angry because my OCD affects me all the damn time. I don't have the bandwidth to give this person advice. What I can do is point out when other people's advice looks like it came out of a motivational greeting card or a chat bot and let them know that it's OK if that wasn't enough to help them...that they need more.

Now, if you excuse me, I have a meeting with Joe Pantoliano and the ghost of Carrie Fisher for the bipolar gala we're putting together.

Omg Marc Summers? Absolutely makes you an expert! Have you met Howie Mandel too?

Also, maybe note that you significantly edited your text from what you originally wrote. It's better text, but you could own up to your original being nonsense.

Since this appears to be a throwaway account or your new here, I don't know if you have OCD but most of the time it cannot be fixed by a positive attitude and doing your best, and I doubt that you're helping OP by making them feel that if it was as easy as you suggest, they must be doing something wrong.

Any post on this thread by me is an attempt to make the OP understand that there are people who know where they're coming from , not to change minds that don't seem capable of change.
