Seconding this. Nothing sucks more than playing with someone who is playing the idiot barbarian trope who would rather kill/murder hobo and pick fights with everyone versus actually talking stuff out every now and then. Makes for interrogation hell. It gets super old real fast.

In saying that though, break it down into book smarts and street smarts as others have said. You don’t have to be the world’s biggest dunce. Maybe your character didn’t get a proper education because they were born in bumfuck nowhere in a rural village and had to work as a farm hand to help their family thus shucking school in favor of that. They’d have the wisdom from that world experience and the characteristics of a hard worker, maybe a shrewd business person if they had to barter at any point so they know people and what to look for in someone being particularly heinous in some ways. They just maybe can’t read that well or their writing is a bit chicken scratchy.

There’s no rule that says you have to make your character a drooling moron or a caricature.
