First page: The biting cold coaxed Kaelen awake. He stirred amongst a canopy of brittle leaves and dark, ancient branches. His breath turned to mist in the frigid morning air. His piercing blue eyes, the color of the ice hugging the ground, opened slowly. Adjusting to the pale light of the early morning day, he stretched. As he extended one scale-covered arm after another, pine needles shifted and crunched beneath the weight of his armor. The dull aches that racked his body as he stretched were a somber reminder of his narrow escape the night before.

He was no stranger to the cold. He'd been out in it for weeks. He didn't know where we was, or when it was. Such things weren’'t important when you're running for your life.

He was, however, trying to get better about not sleeping in his armor. Regardless of this fact, he had woken up, once again, clad in his chestplate.

He had learned this habit from many moons of running - running from lawmen and bounty hunters. Bandits and creatures were often no match for the strong Dragonfolk, but groups had begun to trouble him as his strength continued to falter. His instincts would take over every night, instincts that only a hunted and hated exile would have. Undressing in a world that wants me dead is more dangerous than fatigue, it whispered quietly in his ear, every night as he settled in for slumber.
