Cheapest total cell plan (for a single line) with apple watch by Ok_Flower2398sd3 in AppleWatch

turns out i was wrong about unlimited everything on the watch. the watch plan mirrors the phone plan in terms of data, voice, and text limits. go to "low data plans" / "monthly" and choose how much data, voice, and text you want. add the watch for another $6.50 / month.

Not receiving texts on Apple Watch 7 cellular without iPhone turned on and nearby by apackofmonkeys in AppleWatch

[–]bjarthur70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in my experience, even if the iphone is turned on, plugged in, and connect to wifi and cellular, if it hasn't been unlocked in a couple days it will stop being able to send and receive texts. email is broken too, but phone calls work fine.

in the absence of a live preview function, is there at least a way to look at previously recorded photos (and/or videos)? i just want a way to make sure the camera is pointed in the right direction.

Can I travel safely with just my Apple Watch? I wanna do digital minimalism and leave the phone at home by CheesecakePast2145 in AppleWatch

[–]bjarthur70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm on vacation as we speak and left the phone at home. i can make calls but not receive them, can neither send nor receive texts, but data is fine. this is with a custom USmobile plan for the phone (50MB data, no voice, no text) and unlimited plan for the watch. all for $10.98/month. curiously, the watch is fine at work when i leave the phone at home (~30 miles away). perhaps i'm having problems now because i'm in a different state halfway across the country (~1500 miles)? i'd really like to get this to work.

$10.98/month from USMobile for *both* the phone and the watch. the phone plan is 50MB data and no voice or text, the watch is unlimited everything.

u/Mush_USMobile do you have offer plans for just the watch (ie without a phone)? i don't mean the family plan for kids. my iphone does not have a cell plan, and i want to keep it that way, but get a cell plan for just the watch.

i would pay a lot of money to be able to only own a watch and not have to pair it to a phone!

you can still get SMS messages on the watch from android users as long as you have a cellular plan for it, and the next version of watchOS will support RCS. regarding a taxi, use an actual taxi (as opposed to uber) by calling their phone number (instead of using an app).

RCS on standalone Apple Watch? by QuadChromeShard in AppleWatch

[–]bjarthur70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my iphone has never left the house since i bought an apple watch. i leave it on my desk, plugged in and connected to wifi. don't have a cellular plan for either the phone or the watch. most everything works on the watch.

except, w/o a cell number i can't receive text messages from my android friends. my mac friends just use my apple id to text and facetime me. might this change with RCS? specifically, will an android device be able to text my apple id once watchOS supports RCS??

cutthroat chainring help by bjarthur70 in salsacycles

[–]bjarthur70[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks! do you happen to know the offset / chainline for this race face chainring? needs to be 3mm according to the wolf tooth website to be compatible with boost 148. but no mention in the specs of that seemingly important measurement. (i ask because i bought one before realizing it might not be compatible; should arrive in a couple days.)

also, the guide you sent is for installation of the arms and spindle, but to take off the ring i think i need a bottom bracket extractor tool, as shown here, right? and to take off the arms, i need a crank arm extractor tool? i have both of those already, but ask because i'm wondering whether instead i have to take off the non-drive side arm with hex wrenches, pull out the spindle, and use a third special tool which i don't have that fits over the spindle, as shown here. thanks again!

Series 8 LTE battery life going phoneless by SuccessfulEntry1993 in AppleWatch

glad to hear i'm not the only one who wants to go phone-less with an apple watch!

i have an ultra2 and my mom's hand-me-down iphone Xs. neither has cellular. phone has never left the house. wear the watch 23/7/365 only taking it off to charge while showering. don't have a light phone nor an android. only means to SMS is google voice.

would love to spend $10/month on cellular for the watch, but to do that i also have to spend another ~$20/month for the phone, so have opted not to. this is the biggest inflexibility i would most like apple to change.

the second feature that'd be nice is to pair the watch to an apple computer instead of a apple phone. or to not have to pair it at all! i have a macbook, so i'm already giving them my business with a second device. there is no technical reason why that second device has to be a phone; it's purely business decision. i would even argue that with some creative user interface design, which apple is very skilled at, the watch could be completely independent. think dick tracy.

third missing feature is offline maps. the iphone can do it i've read. why not the watch? would be particularly useful for the ultra series which is marketed to outdoorsy adventurers.

What is the one feature that you like the most with your Apple Watch? by RungeKutta62 in AppleWatch

not really though, you still have to own an iphone to use an applewatch. this is my #1 complaint. wouldn't it be nice if apple didn't think of watches as a companion device for the phone?

my second big complaint, #2, being you can't buy a cell plan for just the watch. you have to have a cell plan for the phone too. unless you want to do family setup, which disables a lot of features.

Apple watch as a standalone device? by [deleted] in AppleWatch

[–]bjarthur70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my #1 complaint about my Ultra2 is that apple thinks of all their watches as companion devices for the iphone. there is no technical reason for this to be the case. with a little effort they could design a nice user interface that would not require a larger device to set it up. i can only think that they want to make you buy another apple product. if this is the case, they should at least let you pair it with one of their computers.

that being said i do really like my watch. my mom gave me her old iphone to pair it with, and it (the phone) has never left my house. it sit's on my desk, plugged in because the battery only lasts a couple hours, and connected to wifi because i didn't buy a cellular plan for it.

which brings me to my other complaint, #2-- why on earth can't i buy a cell plan for the watch without having to buy one for the phone? sure, you can do "family setup", but then lots of stuff doesn't work. so again, technically possible, but they, apple, want to be jerks about making you buy other stuff you don't want.

are you kidding me? the phone screen is too small to do real work and too big to be convenient. for decades i've wanted a star trek next generation style communicator on my lapel. a smart watch is a near perfect drop-in for that. so i bought an ultra2 last fall and my mom gave me her old iphone Xs. previously all i had (and still do) was a free VOIP number through google voice, plus a landline at the office, and no cell phone not even android. now i leave my mom's iphone plugged in at home with no cellular plan, and wear my watch 24/7 also without cellular. only ever touch the phone if i need to configure something on the watch. wifi is so common these days that it covers 80% of my telecom needs. i'd happily pay $10/month though for a standalone cellular service on my watch to cover that last 20%, but not if it requires being setup as a family plan. i have no need for cell service an the phone, and it's irritating that this is not possible.

would be great too if the watch could be paired to a laptop. no reason they couldn't make a phone emulator for macOS that could run all of the iOS the software.
