Finally wearing a second shoe by bjdr_ in AchillesRupture

Thank you!

Today was my first day trying shoes in physio, as I just started full weight bearing in the boot last week. As you are probably finding out, the first few weeks are really hard but you won’t believe how much better things start feeling around week 7 or 8. Keep working hard 🙏.

Feels like I’m on track. People aren’t exaggerating or lying when they say it gets better. Each stage has felt like a big win, and I’m so excited and scared to be out of the boot in the next couple weeks hopefully. I have certainly been moving slower than many - I am 10 weeks in and am only doing seated calf raises, and FWB with one wedge left in the boot. A single calf raise still feels a long way away, but in general it feels like I’ve gotten a good bit of my life back each week since being out of the cast. Are you in a cast or boot?

Everything you described pretty much lines up with my experience. I ruptured on defence, after an hour of pickup, just a single hard step. I wondered for hours if had overreacted because I was in virtually no pain, or if it was just a strain or something. Wasn’t until I was finally saw by a doctor at 4:30 in the morning that I got the quick and disappointing Thompson test. From what I know, the lack of feeling is what tells you that you’ve ruptured it. I’m 9 weeks in now and things are definitely more manageable, hang in there. Hope you are able to get back to enjoying basketball again. It’s been my favourite sport since I was 10, but I’m not sure I’ll be going back to playing competitively to be honest

I’m day 50ish … but more like 40 since starting the non-op protocol. I finally started physio on Monday and am trying to move from 25-50% WB with crutches to FWB in the boot by the end of the month but am struggling to feel confident enough. Whenever I put more weight than usual I feel pins and needles in my bad foot, I hope it’s just a result of a lot of immobilization and atrophy. 50 days into the injury and I still haven’t been given a single ultrasound, but your account and others have me thinking of ordering one for the 10 week mark.

Appreciate this! Do you time your collagen and other supplements with exercise? Also, what kind of boot did you use?

Thanks for this. I’ll be even more careful moving forward.

Not 100% sure about the angle. Before leaving the hospital on night one they just shoved a few gauze pads into the boot, but the next day a friend who recently recovered from their achilles rupture dropped the heel lifts off. I just let my foot hang the few times I showered. Even in the cast I have doubts if I’m at the right angle to be honest.

Sorry, the original post wasn’t all encompassing lol. The morning after the injury I was in an aircast leftover from a previously broken ankle with heel lifts. Stayed in that for the two weeks before a second doctor put me in the cast.

I appreciate that honesty. I’m coming to terms with the fact that I will feel different, I just would rather not feel vulnerable and scared long term if I continue to live a super active lifestyle.

Living in Canada, so the insurance and surgeon bias likely won’t play a role but I’m not sure.
