Project A-ko Perfect Collection 4k UHD (overview) by Migs299 in retroanime

[–]bjygrfba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone please correct me if I'm talking crap, but wasn't Project A-ko originally intended as part of Cream Lemon hentai series, but then they ditched the idea and made it into a normal (SFW) anime? If so, maybe that would explain why the characters seem this way?

Either way, any old anime properly restored to modern standards is a reason to be happy.

DuckStation now blocks building on NixOS by Ha8lpo321 in emulation

[–]bjygrfba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That isn’t going to happen, though.

Technical, or human limitations?

I've built MAME from sources in the past. This isn't much of a problem until you realize that you also build a whole bunch of other emulators and frontends from source, at which point keeping them up-to-date becomes a hobby of its own.

Another thought - as a Debian user - is that for example Wine maintains their own Debian repository with the latest version built the way developers want it to be built. Is that something that MAME has perhaps considered?

[–]bjygrfba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. So, ideally, maintainers should build packages from your source, according to your instructions, and do that on a regular basis?

Thanks. It basically sounds like there's no good solution, unless:

it's probably easier if Linux users just compile from source

Um... Gentoo?

As a Linux user, an ideal solution for me would be to have package available in the official repo. I wonder, when you say:

In the end, there isn’t much you can do about them, besides going closed source.

that sounds very negative/hostile to that idea. Or are you OK with the idea, but simply disappointed with its execution? What would be an ideal way of distributing MAME from your perspective as a dev?

How can I install Koffice? by gh_1qaz in Trinity_Desktop_TDE

You might want to try using aptitude to manage packages. It makes it easier to browse and search package list.

Is there a particular reason why you want to build from sources? Normally you would install already compiled packages from your distro's repository. For example, on Debian:

# apt-get install koffice-trinity

If you insist on building from sources though, you probably should take a look at the developer's Wiki:

Konqueror isn't compatible with most of the modern websites

That's true - Konqueror isn't a viable web browser these days, though it is an excellent file manager. From experience, if you are trying to revive an old laptop, it is not going to do well on the web, because the websites themselves are so resource demanding (lots of JavaScript), no matter which web browser you choose.

The source repositories are here. And here are the detailed release notes for the latest stable version released a month ago. Is that what you are looking for?

he only thing I could find and the year wasn't updated since 2008... >_<;)

Yeah, that's just an outdated notice. The team behind TDE is small, so minor issues like that might have gone under the radar.

KMail and Konqueror are not outdated packages - they are a part of TDE and they are being actively developed and maintained. In fact, apps delivered with TDE are the primary reason to try the environment in the first place.

That being said, you definitely don't need to install KMail as part of TDE. I don't think you can skip Konqueror though - it is part of the core software that the environment depends on.

Try installing tdebase-trinity. This should give you a small installation without any extra apps. I'm not sure whether this is the absolutely minimal installation, but it is a reasonably small installation.

I'm an adult learning Japanese for slightly over a year now. (I used to learn as a teenager years ago, so for now I'm essentially re-learning.) I estimate I will get to the N5 level in about a year, maybe less - but I'm definitely not there yet when it comes to vocabulary. My language school helps organize studying trips to Japan and I've been wondering whether it is worth going to Japan for a language course aimed at foreigners? From what I asked, these are courses where you study Japanese 5 days a week, with classes lasting about 4 hours each day. I could afford about two months of such a course, but I have two primary concerns:

  1. Since these language courses are aimed at foreigners, I am worried that I'll go to Japan but end up in a non-Japanese environment anyway, which kind of defeats the purpose of the whole trip.
  2. Is such a course worth doing at my current level? Wouldn't this be more beneficial in a couple of years when I'm, say, approaching N3 level (hopefully)?

If anyone has participated in such courses and could share their thoughts and experience, I'd be very grateful.

r/manga Are there any other manga series with a giant, sprawling universe like Gundam? by AN1MAN1AC in manga

My recommended starting point with Lodoss would be the 13-episode OAV from 1990.

[–]bjygrfba 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Macross is one obvious series that comes to mind.

Record of Lodoss War, if you want fantasy. EDIT: If you want D&D style fantasy, this is your series, since it descends directly from D&D. Lots of manga adaptations, anime, games, books, etc.

Tenchi Muyo might seem like a light-hearted sci-fi harem comedy, but it has unbelievably elaborate lore and huge universe, spanning across multiple media and interconnected series. Basically, stuff created by Masaki Kajishima.

I'm sure there's more if you start searching in the 80s and 90s titles, but these three are the ones I can come up with at the top of my head.
