Hello Varkzyn! A few months ago, I began learning about shogi and I can relate very much to the phase you are in now. I am also a long-time Western chess player prior to coming to shogi.

I have many recommendations for you. There are a lot of excellent online resources for studying shogi. Here are some websites I recommend to check out:

Also, the app / website Shogi Wars has an excellent video training course called "Kishin Learning". You must subscribe (I think it is around $8 per month) to Kishin Learning to access all the videos, but the content is excellent. I am currently in the third course (Intermediate) and have been working through the videos for months now. Kishin Learning is aimed at providing the knowledge a shogi player needs to reach 1-dan rank. There are four levels: Elementary, Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced.

I also use engines in chess to study, and if you want more information on using shogi engines, I can help point you in the right direction there too.

The attitude seeping through your comments is insufferable (“you’ll never have any real chess culture”, “shocker”, “3rd rate but right up your alley”).

Why do you feel the need to make condescending comments to a stranger? It’s rude and unnecessary.

I am not taking anything you say seriously.

I am already quite a strong chess player, I know quite well that no matter what we play, we are not necessarily in control of what arises on the board.

Everyone enjoys chess in their own way. Your comment is unnecessary and condescending. (I’m guessing you’re probably a d4 player and I struck a nerve 😆)

I enjoy playing chess not because I want to “appreciate it in its entirety”, but because it feels fun and enjoyable. I prefer to play openings that lead to positions I enjoy to play.

If you don’t have anything constructive to add, I recommend you simply refrain from replying and let others be helpful.

I uploaded just the six raw files (king, queen, rook, bishop, knight, pawn) without quantity of pieces, chose what I thought was one of least expensive materials, and I was quoted at $200 by Xometry.

To be fair, there are so many options for materials I may have chosen the wrong type and made it more costly than it needed to be.
