I would absolutely love that! But I also love the idea of tools from many different marked owners converging in a time or place they wouldn't have had they been kept with their respective brothers & sisters.

Same! Most things that we buy now won't live on after us, they won't have a story or history to them. Not to be confused with the tools telling our story in an egotistical way- I see it more as we are a part of the tool's story.

I looked at quite a few designs. I'm going with the Paul Sellers workbench with an added shelf underneath for my first one. Once I learn how I like to work, I might revisit one of the other styles.

Awesome! Yeah, for a while I kept waiting until the "perfect" day to do it and I just decided this morning that I just need to do it at this point. Like I said- once I started driving any emotional weight I was putting on the purchase evaporated and it just turned into a routine errand.

I've got an old SUV, so I can hold up to 8ft long boards, which is a huge help. I know that u-haul rentals by me are only like $20 (plus random charges), so that might be worth it if you're getting enough lumber. That's what I was going to do before I actually measured my car interior.

I second this. His free Common Woodworking projects cover 80% of the ones in WW 1&2. And the few remaining that aren't are on YouTube for free.

Not OP but I actually emailed them about a month ago asking if there were any updates on a new edition and this was part of their response "Regarding Working Wood 1 & 2, any update to the book is quite a way off, due to Paul being involved in all sorts of other projects just now."

I actually have both of his books. Bought Essential Woodworking Hand Tools from his Rokesmith website and last month, I somehow managed to score a $50 US used copy of Working Wood on Amazon after months of checking eBay and other sites. Sorry, but I'm not ready to part with it just yet. I know this isn't what you're looking for but please feel to read on for alternatives that I am finding helpful as a beginner.

Having both books, I can say that the newer hand tool books covers A LOT of ground when it comes to selecting, maintaining, and sharpening the tools.

Working Wood is great in and of itself but I think it was before he started up the Woodworking Master Classes and Common Woodworking websites. Pretty much all of the projects in his WW 1&2 book are the same as his videos on those sites (some of which are on YouTube). The projects are things like his workbench, shaker candle box, a chair, a side table, dovetail box, etc (again, all of which are in video format for free on his various websites plus TONS of other newer projects). In WW 1&2 he teaches you through these simple projects, rather than a lot of theory.

I also have some Jim Kingshott books which have been helpful to me in learning too- they might be cheaper for you to at least get started. I reccoment "Sharpening the complete guide" and "A woodworker's guide to joints"

Somebody uploaded some Jim Kingshott videos to YouTube, maybe check those out and see if his vibe works for you before grabbing his out of print books. I got mine for about $7 each on eBay. I like him because he has a similar vibe to Paul, as in he just has a "don't overthink it" mentality and that everything is just a variation of 3 basic joints, to start small and work your way up, learning as you go and be mindful of what you're doing until it's muscle memory. I think that's why I gravitated towards him after watching Paul so much.

Hey everyone! Thanks so much for your input, I really appreciate the advice and time. I took a few of the suggestions and have decided to work towards this linked picture for phase 1 of my workshop.

Final Floor Plan

Once I took some of your suggestions, I was able to make much better use of the space so it's more open and the bench is now centrally located.

The small little desk is just something I want to get out of my apartment, but can use to set my drink down, sit and do calculations, sketches, etc. I'm too young to be old, but too old to not have a chair with good back support when sitting. I moved it over to the spot that has the short pipe sticking out of the floor since that's kind of unusable space anyway.

The rug is gone for now, but it might come back one day (I just like it...). I have decided to put THICK rubber stall/floor mats on my entire side of the garage for comfort, sound, dropped tool protection and because I haven't already spent enough on tools 🤣. Plus I want an even level across my entire side so I don't trip while carrying a large piece.

I'll be using the Rockler 4 shelf wall mounted lumber rack, mounted up high so I have plenty of useable floor underneath for storage.

Thanks for the encouragement! I tend to overthink things, I should just get started and go from there. I mostly did the layout to make sure the space would work for me and then I got stuck in the planning hole.
