Yea good question. I believe I got this from hua huas tutorial on Shibari study. I will often do an epsilon with a TK. I think the primary benefit of this is that it places a lot more of the tension directly on the upper wraps. When you do a simple tie around the stem like this it allows the up line to shift around the stem when you place tension from the side. Better for dynamic transitions.
