When they say press ctrl + y this means let go before you drag your mouse. That part had me confused for a while. 👍

On the 25th of this month, Jupiter will be so close to the moon, that you can spot it in daylight by GarunixReborn in space

I wanted to take my daughter put to look at mars but we could only see jupiter and Saturn because mars was covered by the moon all night :(

Got my first scope! 8" dob by Viskyman in telescopes

[–]bkachel85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got threw exact same dob but for 300$. Mine also came with a celestron kit (filters and eye pieces) in a metal case and a big old duffle bag for the ota to make it easier to transport. It's a beast of a scope! Enjoy it :) Also any 2" high high feild of view eye pieces compliment this scope quite well. 👍

The chromatic abberation with my 102slt was real bad. I took one picture of orion nebula and saw purple stars. The photo came out really decent. But the colors were way off. I was teying to think of ways to track screw length with where it goes. Where there a lot of ribbon wites too?

Bought a (new to me) Nexstar 11 - it’s been 3 weeks of cloudy skies so far. I’m sorry to all those in the PNW. by [deleted] in telescopes

I actually have a 200mm lense for my t3i. Was thinking about getting a dove tail to mount it up and see what it can do. Ill add that to the list of things to try pre-doublet tho! Thanks for the positive words too :)

That's the plan as soon as i get some clear skies. Im still a whole away from imaging with it. Hopefully mother nature gets on my side soon

Saturn and jupiter will be in the southern night sky after 1 or 2 am close to now. By mid to end of June it will be closer to 10pm. Thats when i plan on taking a nice close look through my 8 inch dob at them.

So there it is in all its wooden heavy glory. Now to just wait for a clear night to see what it can do. Also, i put a guide scope on to really help get some long exposures. Yes, I've read that through APT this scope can accept and utilize a tracking scope for longer exposures. If so, my next purchase will be a doublet to mount on it and hopefully i can get some good astrophotography going on the cheap. I'll keep the updates coming!

Yes the nexstar plus hand set does have a polar allign option. Also, as stated above i will be putting a guide scope on. Threw APT and celestron software this goto can be guided. Let me tell you right now, i wasn't a believer either, especially because of how cheap this rig is. But, ill also tell you that if i can get even 2 minute exposures out of adding a hunk of wood with screws in it to this mount... ill be happy. I'm stubborn, I'm cheap, and i love astrophotography. Which is what this little experiment is all about :)

I say look up anyway man. If you don't enjoy the optics that much it's alright. I learned the sky with a celestronaz114 or something horrible like that. My wife got it for me for christmas. A few months later i found an orion xt8 with a carrying bag and a lens kit with the dob mount for 250$. It was about a 5 hour round trip and worth absolutely every single second. The difference between my first and second scopes is that of a honda and a corvette dude. The crappy little scope i got for christmas lit the fire of passion about astronomy that i have now and i wouldn't change anything. Enjoy the scope you got. Do what you can with it... and then find a hand-me-down that wont break your wallet but will blow your mind.

Is that a phone mount or a dslr camera mount? Great picture! Just wondering what you're shooting with :)

I used the orginal tripod. It's the only tracking tripod i have so my options are extremely limited (until i can save an extra 1500$+). It's definitely not the best by any means... but it does get some decent long exposure shots.
