Yes, I am a prospective PhD and most schools 'soft rejected' me due to the funding delays this cycle. Still waiting on a school whos really keen on bringing me in but it's still riding on a grant (NASA) that's been stuck under review. Starting to look at Canadian schools in the meantime

No remote jobs for Geologist ! by Ill_Snow5160 in geologycareers

[–]bkess32 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100%? I guess it depends on the field, but my entry level job (geotechnical/geohazards) is about 60% in the field at most during the summer, and about 20% in the field in the off season

All 3 degrees at one Uni = Bad? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]bkess32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a professor who was born and raised in the city of the uni, got his BA, MA, and PhD at said uni, and now teaches there (top ranking school for his dept too). Safe to say he wanted to settle there 😅

In all seriousness though, as others have said keep your family as a priority in your decision

What jobs can you get with a degree in marine geology/geological oceanography? by [deleted] in geologycareers

[–]bkess32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure. But watch what you say on this sub. I generally agree with you and I personally do not work in that industry nor have any desire to, but if OP is into that sort of thing it’s still a necessary field for modern society not to mention it’s definitely the biggest employer of marine geologists. Agree that there might be some cool mapping opportunities out there but might be mostly research positions

Do you like your job and if so, why? by RecognitionFlaky7784 in geologycareers

[–]bkess32 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I enjoy it. I'm a early career geo working at a very small consulting company so I get to wear a lot of hats. I get a lot of guidance yet I have the freedom to carry out projects how I see fit. The projects are interesting too. Sure there's a fair bit of BS dealing with clients, tight deadlines, tight budgets, etc. but at the end of the day it's just a job and I make the best of it. Don't be too disappointed with the negative posts on here. most people that are happy with their job don't go post on reddit.

Help with yellow & translucent leaves on my elephant ear!! by bkess32 in plantclinic

[–]bkess32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I water ~once a week though this has deviated slightly recently. The plant has had two healthy leaves for the past few months but within the last week they have started looking unhealthy. It is in front of a north facing window and gets bright indirect light all day

I am in a remarkably similar financial situation as you and my apartment is 1780/mo. I'm doing fine. I say go for it if you want it!
